THE SOCIETY by Jodie Andrefski

Sneak Peek Excerpt

If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?

—William Shakespeare

I pushed through the heavy oak doors leading into Trinity Academy, ignoring the groups of students milling around the wide steps of the ornate brick building. Not like it mattered. They were all busy talking, laughing, and fist-bumping each other, mostly jocks and their adoring fans, none of whom I had the time or interest to speak with.

“Out of my way.”

Bren Fessler—bedazzled toady to my ex-best friend Jessica—shoved past, leaving me gagging from lingering fumes of eau de bitch. I rolled my eyes, hacked through the last of the stench, and headed toward my locker.

Trinity was founded like a hundred years ago, and if buildings really do have a personality, this one had the snooty air of old money. I mean, it was a beautiful campus; it just sucked that I couldn’t stand the majority of the kids who went there anymore. But since Trinity had a stellar academic program that looked great on college applications, I’d remained, even after everything that happened. Besides, my creative writing teacher, Ms. Kemper, had pretty much assured me a shining recommendation to Columbia, her alma mater. I think she felt sorry for me. So I stayed. I wasn’t about to blow my chance at getting into my dream school even if everything around me sucked.

As I neared my locker, five or six members of the golden crew sashayed in a little blond bubble across from me, confident toothy smiles all over their faces. Since it was the start of Rush week, they were probably all certain they’d find a typed note covertly slipped through one of the vents in their locker, an invitation to rush our high school’s hallowed cloak-and-dagger Musterian Society.

Even the name sounded decayed, like a musty blanket you’d find rotting in your grandmother’s attic. I’d looked it up once. Musterian. Turns out it’s Greek for “a mystery confided only to the initiated and not to ordinary mortals.”

There would obviously be no note in my locker. I was way too ordinary, and mortal was putting it mildly. My hair wasn’t blond and shiny enough. I didn’t prance around in a cutesy little uniform with TA emblazoned across my not-quite-big-enough boobs.

The cheerleaders seemed to miss what just about everyone else recognized. The irony in the fact that our school’s initials also stood for a completely different phrase. Then again, they’d probably be just as proud to wear the label, Tits and Ass. Yet these Einsteins were usually the ones chosen to pledge, at least to meet the female initiates quota.

Just about every kid at school dreamed of being invited to rush. Invitation to the Society wasn’t only a guaranteed boost to your social standing, although that was a given. No, being in the Society offered even more tangible, life-changing perks. It pretty much guaranteed acceptance to the college of your choice—past members served on the admissions boards of some of the best schools in the country. Dream jobs tended to follow. The Society members helped their own.

We weren’t supposed to know all that, but it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out when you saw school acceptance letters roll in. The Society was a who’s who of the in crowd, guaranteeing a life we all fantasize about.

They didn’t ask people like me to join. I wasn’t cool enough, at least not anymore.

Steps away from my locker, the golden crew parted like the Red Sea. Whispers and giggles engulfed me—dark as smoke, and just as acrid.

“Oh my God, it’s perfect.”

“…her expression.”

I tried to ignore them, just another day in Trinity paradise.

Until I saw it. Jessica. She’d gone too far this time.

THE PALADINS by Julie Reece!!!

Oh wow. Wowza. Whoa.

Alice in Wonderland meets Southern goth meets Johnny Depp in his finest roles.

Hey, film agents--this book needs its own MOVIE. Do you hear me?! Do yourselves a favor and bring this brilliance to vibrant, onscreen life!

Reece's brain is a world unto itself and one in which I would willingly get lost. The technicolor experience she has created is all-encompassing, her characters swoon-y, witty and delicious, and the plot is a summertime somersault down a grassy hill. Meaning one you start, you're not stopping, and you'll squeal inwardly (and perhaps outwardly) all the way down that bad boy.

If you haven't read THE ARTISANS, go forth and do so. Then, quickly--like, whiplash fast--get your hands on THE PALADINS and dive into it. Go! Quickly!

The Paladins (The Artisans #2) by Julie ReecePublication Date:  May 3, 2016Publisher:  Month9Books

The Artisan curse is broken. Souls trapped in a mysterious otherworld called The Void are finally released. Now, Raven Weathersby, Gideon Maddox, and Cole Wynter can finally move on with their lives...or so they thought. If the ancient magic is truly dead, then why are mystical fires plaguing Gideon at every turn? What accounts for Raven’s frightening visions of her dead mother? And who is the beautiful, tortured girl haunting Cole’s dreams?

Last year, a group of lonely teens sacrificed secrets, battled the supernatural, and faced their own demons to set one another free. Yet six months later, the heart of evil still beats within The Void. And the trio is forced to face the horrific truth: that their only way out is to go back in.

The Paladins completes this eerie YA Southern Gothic where loyalties are tested, love is challenged, and evil seeks them on the ultimate battlegrounds—in their minds, their souls, and their hearts

Go add it! Go read it! Go buy it--a copy for you and a few copies for friends!

Born in Ohio, I lived next to my grandfather’s horse farm until the fourth grade. Summers were about riding, fishing and make-believe, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all.

i struggled with multiple learning disabilities, did not excel in school. I spent much of my time looking out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) I fought dyslexia for my right to read, like a prince fights a dragon in order to free the princess locked in a tower, and I won.

Afterwards, I read like a fiend. I invented stories where I could be the princess… or a gifted heroine from another world who kicked bad guy butt to win the heart of a charismatic hero. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Later, I moved to Florida where I continued to fantasize about superpowers and monsters, fabricating stories (my mother called it lying) and sharing them with my friends.

Then I thought I’d write one down…

Hooked, I’ve been writing ever since. I write historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, adventure, and young adult romances. I love strong heroines, sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. My writing is proof you can work hard to overcome any obstacle. Don’t give up. I say, if you write, write on!

ADORKABLE Blitz!

Adorkable

by Cookie O'Gorman

Release Date: March 31st 2016

Summary from Goodreads:

Adorkable (ah-dor-kuh-bul): Descriptive term meaning to be equal parts dorky and adorable. For reference, see Sally Spitz.

Seventeen-year-old Sally Spitz is done with dating. Or at least, she's done with the horrible blind dates/hookups/sneak attacks her matchmaking bestie, Hooker, sets her up on. There's only so much one geek girl and Gryffindor supporter can take.

Her solution: she needs a fake boyfriend. And fast.

Enter Becks, soccer phenom, all-around-hottie, and Sally's best friend practically since birth. When Sally asks Becks to be her F.B.F. (fake boyfriend), Becks is only too happy to be used. He'd do anything for Sal--even if that means giving her PDA lessons in his bedroom, saying she's "more than pretty," and expertly kissing her at parties.

The problem: Sally's been in love with Becks all her life--and he's completely clueless.

This book features two best friends, one special edition Yoda snuggie, countless beneath-the-ear kisses and begs the question:

Who wants a real boyfriend when faking it is so much more fun?

EXCERPT

“No! I’ve seen this movie. The one where the two stupid teenagers think they’re smarter than all the adults in the world, so they don’t tell anyone something strange is going on until it’s too late and then the girl ends up running through the woods in her bra and panties while some guy in a scary hockey mask chases her with a chain saw. I’m not that girl, Sam. I don’t want to be that girl. I’m not smarter than everyone else. I think we need to tell someone.”
Sam doesn’t respond. He’s stopped pacing, and his hands are hanging loosely at his sides. When he continues to stare at me without speaking, I say, “Sam?”
“I’m sorry. You lost me at bra and panties.”

“How come you smell like . . .” I lean in for a closer inspection and then come up with, “Camping?”
Sam just looks at me. I’m beginning to learn the subtle language behind his silence. He can communicate so much with just a lift of his eyebrow.
“Camping?” he says, followed by his trademark eyebrow arch.
“You smell like trees and campfire.” We’re sitting on my front porch, two people on stage for the trees and stars outside my door.
“Well the tree part is my cologne.” He shifts so that he’s facing me. “I always tell the sales girl, ‘Just ring up whatever will help me smell like a lumberjack.’”

General Reynolds smiles, and his eyes flicker to my hand clenching the door frame. “I see you’ve learned nothing from your aunt.” When he notices the look of confusion on my face, he adds, “She’s not as wary around men.”
“I’m nothing like her.” I was aiming for confident, but my words come out too forceful.
“No.” He studies me for a minute. “You take after your mother.”
“Why would you say that? You couldn’t possibly know my mother!” The words tumble out of my mouth before I realize I’d even thought them.
He doesn’t answer right away. For a moment, I’m not sure if he’s going to answer at all. Then he says, “Let’s go for a ride.”

“Sam!” I yell. My hands are reaching for him, while my eyes can’t turn away from the old man staring at me from just outside the truck window.
“It’s okay, Presley.” Sam releases my seat belt and pulls me closer into his side. “The doors are locked. He can’t get in.”
“He’s freaking me out. Why is he staring at me?”
“Get outta here, old man!” Sam yells.
But the man isn’t listening. His eyes are searching mine. His face is sculpted in terror. “You!” He points a long, bony finger in my direction and taps it against the glass. “You have to help me!” he cries. “We’re all going to die.”
I shake my head at him. I don’t understand why he’s doing this or what he’s trying to tell me. But he takes it as an answer. Suddenly his face slumps. The wrinkles that mere seconds ago held his angry expression together flatten out into a sad puddle of old skin.

One . . . two . . . I bolt for my bedroom on three. My foot catches on something just before I reach my doorway. Too late, I realize it’s a hand. It grips me tighter, the fingers warm against my bare ankle. I kick wildly. My legs flail out in every direction until I feel one foot connect with something solid and I hear a loud moan. The fingers loosen slightly, just enough for me to slip free. I race for my bedroom window and have just enough time to push out the screen before I see a dark figure crawl across my floor. I throw myself out the window onto the hard ground. I feel a shooting pain rush up my side, but I ignore it. I start running toward my bike. For the first time since we moved here, I hate the streetlight outside my house. My feet slide in the grass, and for a second, I think I’m going down. I can almost feel my hands and knees touching the wet grass. But I catch myself and stagger sideways until I have my footing again. I’m half running, half carrying my bike down my driveway before my awkward legs manage to mount the pedals. “Go. Just go,” I whimper under my breath. “Please. Please go.”

CRAZY STUPID FAUXMANCE by Shellee Roberts Guest Post!

Author Shellee Roberts talks bad breakups...

In Crazy, Stupid, Fauxmance, my main characters, Mariely and Cabot get publically and humiliatingly dumped on the same night at the same party. Luckily, I’ve never suffered such a scandalous break up, but I’ve been very unceremoniously dumped. Also, I am the worst breaker-upper ever. Is anyone good at it?
The worst breakup ever that I was a party to, though, happened in college. I was casually dating sweet Boy #1, whom I’d pursued to keep my mind off Boy #2, who was casually dating a girl whom his close friend was interested in but couldn’t date because he already had a long-term (though CRAZY) girlfriend. Coincidentally, said girl and I have the same name, too. Basically, it was Melrose Place in real life.
But, we were all super young and hormones made us bat-shizzat insane, so eventually Boy #2 and I wanted to be together. After one of those all night talking sessions—the kind you only have when you’re young and falling in love—we decided we would break up with our casual others. No fuss, no muss, all very adult-like.
I promptly broke up with sweet Boy #1, which sucked, but I did it, and Boy #2…DID NOTHING. He never said anything to the other girl. At all. And never told me!
Thinking we were free and clear, Boy #2 and I started seeing each other. I was blissfully happy, until we were all at some sporting event I don’t remember when the other girl asked me if he and I were together. That’s when it became clear to me that he had never officially ended it with her, rather very cowardly just said nothing and stopped calling her. Like an epic douchebag!
I should have seen the writing on the wall, but I was too head-over-heels in that way that makes you stupid. He would go on to break my heart, of course. Over and over.
But there was a happy ending to all this melodrama. The other girl was a darling. She eventually started dating the friend who’d had a crazy girlfriend, and we became good friends. We shared an apartment post-graduation and she was in my wedding party when I married Boy #3, the best boy. The one who has never broken my heart.

Hello, World!

There are three things (besides her family) that Shellee loves more than Netflix: Dr. Pepper, OTPs, and book boyfriends (I’m looking at you, Gilbert Blythe).

Shellee has been told that her life goal as a writer should be to win prestigious awards that will grant her literary immortality, but as an OG ‘shipper (like, seriously, Tad and Dixie--my first hardcore ship) all she really wants is to create two characters that people love so much they give them a cool mashup name.

Shellee spends her days living the dream with her family in Austin, Texas--and by living the dream she means waking up at the crack of dawn to go to work, chauffeur, walk dogs, do dishes, and fold laundry. At night she gets down to to real business, basking in the warm, blue glow of her computer screen and bringing the stories in her head to life on the page...or watching Veronica and Logan fan videos on YouTube till 2am.

Tomorrow she’s definitely going to kick that procrastination problem to the curb.

Grieving the death of her godfather and haunted by her cousin Cassie’s betrayal, Barrie returns from a trip to San Francisco to find the Watson plantation under siege. About the Author

Martina Boone was born in Prague and spoke several languages before learning English. Her first teacher in the U.S. made fun of her for not pronouncing the "wh" sound right, so she set out to master "all the words”—she's still working on that! In the meantime she’s writing contemporary fantasy set in the kinds of magical places she'd love to visit.

If you like romance steeped in mystery, mayhem, Spanish moss, and a bit of magic, she hopes you'll look forward to meeting Barrie, Eight, Cassie, Pru, Seven and the other characters of Watson Island.
