I spend my days thinking about plots, creating characters who I really get to know over the course of a project, and writing and rewriting a story until it is the best I can make it. I have the freedom to choose what I do each day and each one is different. Sometimes I write for hours straight, other times I might only get a couple of lines done, but those sentences will have helped me move thorough a tricky problem, ready to get writing for hours again the next day. I can take breaks, go for walks, and choose when I want to return to my desk. I never wake up of a morning, dreading going to work.(less)

There really are no written rules. Everyone is different and so everyone’s advice will also be different. Some say you must write every day, but that may be impossible. You may only have half an hour a week to yourself. If that’s the case then make sure you devote that time to actually writing.
One thing I will say is, don’t rush. Take your time to find out what you want to write. Everyone needs to find their own voice. Experiment, try writing in different genres. No one is rushing you to get something into print, especially when first starting out. Above all, enjoy the process. Good luck.(less)

Where Does the Time Go?

Ten years ago I uploaded my first novel, DRIVEN TO DISTRACTION onto Amazon, ready for all the world to see. I was excited but also terrified. Would my work be hated? Would it be loved? Would I find myself at a literary festival, reaching past JK Rowling for a sausage roll at the buffet table?

Those feelings and questions remained with the publication of every new book...well, less the reaching past Read more of this blog post »

Stuart Bone answered Goodreads's question: Stuart Bone
I personally think writing is more about getting on with it than being inspired first. Sometimes it can be a hard slog and you have to just sit at your desk and work through it.
For me, inspiration comes while I’m actually writing. When I start workin See Full Answer

“Nobody had seen a thing but that didn't stop everyone talking. You didn't have to witness something to gossip to someone else about it.”
Stuart Bone, Reflections

“Maureen is a sweet lady."

"Who's completely out of her depth as matron here. I don't know how she passed her nursing exams let alone become the head honcho. She almost killed me not long after I arrived here."

"You're exaggerating."

"I am not," Dora said, indignantly, "Moron shoved one of my suppositories down my throat at medicine time. I nearly choked to death. She was too busy concentrating on getting an aspirin up my arse to notice me turning blue.”
Stuart Bone, Long Shadows

“There was a steady throng of people in the market square now and a distinct buzz in the air with the sound of excited chatter alongside the clamour of heels on cobbles and the raised voices of the stallholders advertising their wares. Upon entering we bumped straight into Josie.

"All on your own?" Angela asked her.

"I've left Sooz looking round the antiques shops," Josie said, "I went in the first one with her but that was enough for me. I'm not into knick-knacks like she is. I much prefer a good book."

"Something classical," I suggested.

"Oh yes, definitely," Josie replied, "I love the classics. I did have a look at the ones on sale in the shop."

"But nothing took your fancy?"

"Not really. I was fingering 'Howard's End' for a while."

"I bet that brought the colour back to his cheeks," I told her, "We'll see you at the coach later on."

I grabbed Angela's arm and we walked off before Josie could ask what I meant.”
