When Jacob Devlin was four years old, he would lounge around in Batman pajamas and make semi-autobiographical picture books about an adventurous python named Jake the Snake. Eventually, he traded his favorite blue crayon for a black pen, and he never put it down. When not reading or writing, Jacob loves geeking out at comic book conventions and blasting Italian pop rock music in his car. He does most of these things in southern Arizona.

I'm the kind of guy who finds a story in an abstract photo or a song. It also helps to stick my characters in the hot seat and "interview" them as if we were talking face to face. I do that a lot on my blog, not just to generate ideas but also because it's a lot of fun!(less)

Similarly, read, read, read! Cultivate things that inspire you, but don't wait for inspiration to come. Make lists of your favorite books, songs, TV characters, places, etc. Inspiration is everywhere. Don't wait for it. Create it. I also highly recommend falling into a good writing community or finding some honest, constructive critique partners with similar goals! If writing is in your heart, don't give it up.(less)

On Small Wins

Dear Friends,

I went back and forth all day about whether I should post this tonight, as you and I have already had to sift through four billion messages from our bosses, government officials, teachers, and the CEO of every business we’ve ever given our email address to. (Wendy’s, you’re up next! Get up here, Wendy!)

I try to find some levity where I can, but it’s been a wild couple of weeks to say
