Throwback Thanksgiving

Throwback Thanksgiving

One of my favorite things about Thanksgiving is watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Paradewhile the turkey bakes in the oven. Oh the aroma!I’ve watched the paradefor as longas I can remember. And I’ve attended the parade twice—once asa high school senior withmy friend Anita (two Arkansas farm girls in The Big Apple!), and again twenty-five years later when my daughter was part of a drill team group that performed in the parade.

Today, I’m sharing a few throwback Thanksgivingpics…Here’s the...

Favorite Buttermilk Pie

Favorite Buttermilk Pie

This is my favorite buttermilk pie recipe. Actually, it’s the only one I’ve ever made, but why mess with something so incredibly delicious?

I’m just going to get right to the recipe. Thanksgiving is next week and no one has time for small talk.

Sunday Letter: 11.17.19

Sunday Letter

Dear Sunday Letter readers,

I didn’t write a Sunday Letter last weekend because I was in Eureka Springs. The significant thing about this isn’t that I was too busy to do it. The bigger deal for me is that I left my computer at home. Since I started writing, I always take my MacBook with me when I go out of town. We are tight that way. (Only one other time have I left him behind—Kelsey’s wedding weekend.)

I’ll admit I felt a little anxiety over leaving Mac home alone.

But if I’m being honest, after the panic subsided,...

Fallen Leaf Art

Fallen Leaf Art

Have you heard about fallen leaf art? I read about it thanks to Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company. On Facebook, Baker Creek linked to an article on fallen leaf art. The official term is ochiba art. Ochiba is Japanese for “fallen leaves.”

落ち葉

Did I ever tell you I studied Japanese at Baylor University during my college years? And that I spent a summer in Japan? I would love to return someday (#bucketlist). For now, I’ve decided to embrace the eastern idea of fallen leaf art. After all, supplies are plentiful in our neighbo...

Triple Falls (aka Twin Falls) at Camp Orr

Last week, John and I did a little exploring in Jasper, Arkansas with the goal to visit Triple Falls. What a scenic, must see spot! No worries if you can’t visit for real. I’m bringing it to you.

Of course my pictures in no way capture the true majesty. Oh well. Until apparition (a la Harry Potter) becomes a thing, this will have to do.

Triple Falls (aka Twin Falls)

This trail is also called Twin Falls. Confusing much? I believe this is because two separate bodies of water feed the waterfall—a c...

Sunday Letter: 11.03.19

Sunday Letter

Dear Sunday Letter friends,

Did you remember to “fall back” last night? Once again, the clock high above our pantry door shows the correct time. Until March, anyway. Ha.

FYI, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time.

Something to note on this chilly November morning: Daylight Saving Time was never about the farmers. It was originally about saving energy during WWI. Today, I’m not sure what it’s about other than making our bodies feel out of sync. Crazy what one hour can do. Right?

Wedding Mode...

Fixer to Fabulous on HGTV

Fixer to Fabulous

I’m excited for my friend, Jenny Marrs, and her family! Their brand-new television show Fixer to Fabulous airs on HGTV this week! Be sure to tune in (or set your DVR) this Tuesday night, October 22, at 9:00/8:00 Central Time. They are the sweetest family and their home renovations in Bentonville, Arkansas are, well, fabulous.

Fixer to Fabulous

Let’s face it, we need someone to fill the sad vacancy left wide open when Chip and Joanna Gaines decided Fixer Upper would end. Fixer to Fabulous on HGTV will expertly fit the bill. I just know it. And being...

Sunday Letter: 10.20.19

Sunday Letter

Dear Sunday Letter friends,

This past week, I spent most of my time working on behind-the-scenes things associated with writing. (This means I don’t have much to show for my time…)

One thing that happened—I heard from the director of my play, Last Call at the Dairy Freeze. He said rehearsals are going well, and the cast is fantastic. Honestly, the idea that my play has a director and a cast astounds me. And to my friends who are planning to attend, you astound me too!

No idea what I’m talking about? Well, I wrote my first play, and...

Black Apple Crisp

Black Apple Crisp

Since black apples are in season in Arkansas, I made a Black Apple Crisp. For several days, it sat on the stove under aluminum foil. John and I walked by and took big spoonfuls straight from the pie pan and pretended that since we weren’t sitting down with a whole bowlful, we weren’t really eating it…

You know how that works out.

Black Apple Crisp

I talked about this Black Apple Crisp in last week’s Sunday Letter, and several people asked for the recipe. So here it is.

Sunday Letter: 10.13.19

Sunday Letter

Dear Sunday Letter friends,

Well, fall was fun. I hope you didn’t miss it since it only lasted a sum total of six days.

Haha.

No, really.

I know when our local news channel brings in two weather guys to bring the immediate forecast, and they have removed their suit jackets and rolled up the sleeves of their starched white shirts, things are about to get serious in the weather department.

The day before our first forecasted freeze of the season, I ran around like a crazy person clipping roses...
