Mexican Corn Recipe!
Oh my gosh, this Mexican Corn recipe is my new favorite! And yay, sweet corn is in season here in Arkansas. If you don’t grow corn or know a farmer who does, grab a few ears at your local farmer’s market and get busy making this simple recipe. I guarantee, your family will love it.
Unless your people don’t like corn.

We Come to the Lake
We come to the lake and talk to the water
with stones we skim across her glassy surface,
As we dangle bare feet from the edge of the dock
our eyes scan her familiar coves,
looking for evidence
of our younger
selves.
We come to the lake and talk to the water
with toes plunged deep into cold pockets,
with laughter that skips over her silvery ripples.
Like sea sponges, our hearts
gather new memories,
hold them inside.
Always.
In the trees, a mourning dove calls.
Up the hill, a screen door slap...

Dear July…,
Dear July,
We meet again.
Me? I’m a year older than the last time we spoke.
You? You never seem to change. For the most part, you’re still bright and sunny. A hot tamale for sure.
Me? I have a few more wrinkles in a few more places. Ironic that we can attribute some of that to you. Haha. No, really.
Remember When…Remember when I turned five beneath the weeping willow tree? The playhouse, brand new, was the destination for a tea party-themed birthday. Bring your baby dolls, the invitations r...

Sunday Letter: 06.30.19
Dear Sunday Letter friends,
Tomorrow is July. Can you believe it?
Today my niece and nephew turn 19. I can’t believe that either.
I woke with a horrible headache this morning, probably because time is flying so quickly my brain is spinning inside my skull. Hopefully not, but that’s how it feels.
I’m drinking coffee and trying to ignore it because I have lots going on today.
Jackson County LibraryI’ve been meaning to tell you this. The Jackson County Library in Newport has the coolest thing...

(highly) Scientific Garden Experiment re: Japanese Beetles
Well, what do ya know? The Japanese beetles have returned. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been conducting a highly scientific garden experiment regarding the Japanese beetles that are incessantly eating our roses and cherry trees. Today on the blog, I bring you the steps of my research leading to a conclusion with commentary thrown in for good measure.
Something a little different, I guess you might say. Something inspired by 5th grade science class.
Or Mystery Science Theater.
Remember...

Sunday Letter: 06.23.19

Dear Sunday Letter Readers,
Here in northwest Arkansas we had thunderstorms all night; it’s still storming, and there’s rain in the forecast all day. Rolling, booming thunder, the good sleeping sort except when it’s too loud and too much, which was last night. I woke up every hour it seemed. Now here I am drinking coffee, listening to the storms, writing this letter to you.
We survived soggy spring to see stormy summer? Hopefully not.
I’m exaggerating a bit. Since summer’s arrival, we have h...

along the banks of Little River
Before pigweed and meth took root in our county, before tractors became smarter than people, when each town had a cotton gin and a courthouse square, vibrant and spirited, we were young.
Back then.
Before text messaging and likes and follows, before helicopter moms became a hovering, annoying thing, when farm-to-table meant suppertime—eat what’s served and don’t dare whine—we were kids.
Back then.
Barefoot, we peddled our bikes along the banks of Little River, to our very own gully, the sand...

Sunday Letter: 06.16.19
Dear Sunday Letter friends,
I woke this morning unsure of my whereabouts. LOL. In the past ten days, I’ve been driving all over the state, sleeping in a hotel, a bed and breakfast, my childhood home (aka the Bat Cave), and now, at my friend’s home in Jonesboro.
I’ll be glad to sleep in my own bed tonight.
Tour d’ ArkansasI’ve been on a Tour d’ Arkansas.
First, I spent two days in Newport selling books at the Delta Arts Festival. Already that weekend seems a month ago. Then, after one night...

We survived Garden Tour! (Party Crashers and all…)
Hey everyone! Sorry I’ve been MIA this past week. MIA as in Missing in Arkansas. A few days after participating on the garden tour, I set out for the Delta Arts Festival and spent two days in the Batesville / Newport area with fellow Arkansas artists and authors. Now I’m preparing to spend five days in Piggott at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center with a group of authors and Ernest himself if he decides to inspire us with his presence. Just kidding about Ernest but it is an...

Sunday Letter: 06.02.19
Dear Sunday Letter friends,
As we float into June, I think about the year we’ve had so far. And I worry about friends and family and folks I don’t know affected by floodwaters in Arkansas and Oklahoma. And farmers who can’t get crops in. Let’s hope and pray for a calm, productive June, shall we?
I’m happy to report we survived the Garden Tour yesterday. I am absolutely exhausted to the middle of my bone marrow. I plan to recap everything in a future blog post, but for now I’ll blame the Gard...
