Kate Bateman (also writing as K. C. Bateman) wrote her first historical romance in response to a $1 bet with her husband who rashly claimed she'd 'never finish the thing.' She gleefully proved him wrong. Her Regency and Renaissance-era romances all feature her trademark feisty, intelligent heroines, wickedly inappropriate banter, and heroes you want to both strangle and kiss.

When not traveling to exotic locations 'for research,' Kate leads a double life as a fine art appraiser and on-screen antiques expert for several TV shows in the UK, each of which has up to 2.5 million viewers. She splits her time between Illinois and her native England and writes despite three inexhaustible children and a number-loving husband who still owes her that d

Because, really, who wouldn't want to be the last dream of someone's soul?

And, (if i'm forced to choose another!) there's an awesome moment in Georgette Heyer's These Old Shades where the Duke of Avon is asked by Leonie why he has helped her; was it purely for revenge?
“Is—is that why—why you made me your ward, and gave me so many, many things?” she asked in a small voice.
He rose, and went to the window, and stood looking out.
“Not entirely,” he said, and forgot to drawl.
I love that last line because it shows so perfectly how he's allowed her to get beneath his defenses, despite his resistance. The fact that he forgets to maintain his usual bored, cynical persona reveals his true feeling for her; he's emotionally naked and it's the precise moment he's bought to his knees by love. Fabulous!(less)

The heroine, Sabine de La Tour, is a brilliant forger who meets her match in aristocratic spy Richard Hampden. I'm having a lot of fun with these two. Sabine arrives in England with a suitcase full of counterfeit money. An honest woman would simply destroy the evidence of her crimes. But Sabine's never been all that good at being good . . . and she's always wanted to see London . . .(less)

“Has he ever even said he loved you?"
"He's been telling me for years," she said softly, "I just wasn't listening”
Connie Brockway, As You Desire

Connie Brockway
“He stopped. She heard the intake of his breath. “You are my country, Desdemona.” Yearning, harsh and poignant and she felt herself swaying toward him. “My Egypt. My hot, harrowing desert and my cool, verdant Nile, infinitely lovely and unfathomable and sustaining.”

She gasped.

His gaze fell, shielded by his lashes. An odd, half-mocking smile played about his lips. “You’ll never hear old Blake say something like that.”

She swallowed, unable to speak, her senses abraded by his stimulating words, her pulse hammering in anticipation? Trepidation?

“Remember my words next time he calls you a bloody English rose.”
