To Heaven and Back

A Doctor’s Extraordinary Account of Her Death, Heaven, Angels, and Life Again: A True Story

by Mary C Neal

BOOK DESCRIPTION

A kayak accident during a South American adventure takes one woman to heaven — where she experienced God’s peace, joy, and angels — and back to life again.

In 1999 in the Los Rios region of southern Chile, orthopedic surgeon, devoted wife, and loving mother Dr. Mary Neal drowned in a kayak accident. While cascading down a waterfall, her kayak became pinned at the bottom and she was immediately and completely submerged. Despite the rescue efforts of her companions, Mary was To Heaven and Back by Mary C Nealunderwater for too long, and as a result, died.

To Heaven and Back is Mary’s remarkable story of her life’s spiritual journey and what happened as she moved from life to death to eternal life, and back again. Detailing her feelings and surroundings in heaven, her communication with angels, and her deep sense of sadness when she realized it wasn’t her time, Mary shares the captivating experience of her modern-day miracle.

Mary’s life has been forever changed by her newfound understanding of her purpose on earth, her awareness of God, her closer relationship with Jesus, and her personal spiritual journey suddenly enhanced by a first-hand experience in heaven.  To Heaven and Back will reacquaint you with the hope, wonder, and promise of heaven, while enriching you own faith and walk with God.

The other day, I came across this book on Amazon and placed it on my to-read list. Below is an Amazon interview (from the product page) with the author.

Amazon Q&A with Mary C. Neal, M.D

Q. How did you feel when you died? Did you know what was happening?

A. I was acutely aware of everything that was happening. I knew that my efforts to exit the boat were not working, that I was out of air, and that I was too far from the riverbank for anyone to reach me. I knew that I would probably die. Having grown up with a fear of drowning, I was surprised to find my transition from life to death was seamless, peaceful, and beautiful. I felt quite wonderful.

Q. What was your faith life like before your death?

A. Before my near-death-experience, I believed in God and took my kids to Sunday school but was not particularly religious. Like many accomplished young adults, I felt like I was in control of my life and my future. Although I tried to be a “good” and “moral” person, my faith was not integrated into my daily life and the demands of work and family left little time to think about spirituality.

With my near-death-experience, the truth of God’s promises and the reality of eternal life became a part of my every breath. I am in constant prayer and regardless of what I am doing, I try to reflect God’s love and live for His glory. I try not to miss opportunities to uplift or encourage the spiritual life of others, and I live with gratitude and joy, knowing that I never face challenges alone.

Q. Why do you think you came back to life?

A. I certainly didn’t want to return to Earth, but was given information about some of the work I had yet to complete and wasn’t really given a choice. I was expected to share my experiences and my story with others, helping transform their faith into compete trust that God keeps His promises.

Q. Do you have any regrets about this experience?

A. I have not a hint of regret. In fact, my death and return to life is the greatest gift I have ever received, and I am continually grateful for having had this experience.

Q. How do you explain why this happened to you?

A. I have always been a private person, am not known to be a writer, and do not relish the attention of speaking. I have been asked this question many times. I do not know the answer, but I am a scientist by training, a skeptic by nature, and a very concrete, rational thinker. Perhaps, I was given this job because I have a developed a lifetime of credibility.

Q. How is your experience compared to others who’ve gone to heaven and come back to physical life?

A. I have not read many accounts of other people’s experiences, but I have had many patients over the years tell me about their own near-death experiences. It seems that most stories, mine included, contain some consistent elements–that of an overwhelming sense of God’s love and forgiveness, intense peace and beauty and no desire to return to Earth. Everyone recalls the details with precision and each person is profoundly affected by the experience. In these ways, my experience is quite similar.

Q. What do you want people to know about heaven?

A. God’s unconditional love for each of us is intense, complete, and is reflected in all of Heaven. Before we return to Heaven, our real home, we have an incredible opportunity on Earth to face challenges that will help us learn, grow and to become more Christ-like in the fruits of our spirit. Our time is so short that we need to be about God’s business every day.

heaven-back

At the same time that Dr. Mary Neal was drowning in a river in Chile, her husband, Bill, appeared to me in a dream. Bill is an old friend of mine from high school. We had shared many adventures and confidences over the years, but neither he nor any other friend had ever stared at me in a dream and woke me up. I shook it off at the time, only to learn a few days or weeks later why I had seen him.

The story of her experiences from the drowning, through the repeated revivals and her ultimate survival are the events upon which this book is anchored. But the meat and meaning of it are in the unfolding of her life as guided and protected by her God. I’m obviously no disinterested party. Skeptics can be reassured by my report that if it came from Mary’s pen, it will be the truth and the whole truth. I doubt, however, that her or anyone’s personal account can penetrate fully into the modern psyche. That is, into those who think that they need proof of what we call God. As an account of a brush with the Hereafter, here have been many others similar to it, and they’re well enough known to be used as shorthand in bad films.

What Mary and those like her have experienced are gifts from somewhere, given not just to them. She gives it back to us disguised as a simple offering. She doesn’t baffle the reader with melodrama, hyperbole, fantasy, or excessive adjectives. She tells her story in a concise & detailed way, with a voice of eloquent and unadorned sincerity. In this way, it’s easy to read and difficult to put down, vividly descriptive and completely convincing, humbling and inspiring.

Fortunately for us, she kept waking up in the middle of the night until she couldn’t keep from writing it down for us. The reason to read this remarkable account is witness, which is one of the few ways that we have left to hack a little hole in our jungle of unbelief.

So I bundled all these questions together and where possible created mini tutorials such as the ones below because I was researching these subjects for myself anyway and thought I may as well share for all of us to get some joy out of it.

Some of these tutorials are available from this blog and can also be downloadedHOW TO POST TO THE BIG 5 SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS FOR FREE WITH ONE CLICK OF THE MOUSE as a pdf from my friends at Gumroad, such as for instance ‘How to post to the BIG 5 (Social Media Platforms) for free,  with one click of your mouse.

THREE VOLUMES

Anyway, as I was writing away the book became nearly 250 pages which is way too big! Not many readers like big books. Nor does it help to prevent overwhelm. So now what? Should I try to cut it down? Minimise the material? Bring it out in a series? I though about it for a second and after talking it over with some of my buddies decided to bring out three volumes. Volume One, Two and Three all in one go.

And because I do not like beating around the bush and wasting anyone’s time I give the good stuff up front in Volume One, which is only around 30 pages long.

Sukkot, Feast of Tabernacles

GOD’S HOLY FEAST

Post from Nehemia Gordon, Find the full post here.

Sukkot (Feast of Booths) & Shemini Atzeret (Eighth Day of Assembly)

On Chag Ha-Sukkot, Feast of Booths (Tabernacles) we are commanded to build a Sukkah (Booth) using as building materials the “4 species” listed in Lev 23:40. Rabbinical tradition teaches that a bundle of these building materials must be ritually waved in the air during the festival.

We’re commanded  to celebrate the Feast of Booths (Chag Ha-Sukkot) for seven days, from the 15th to the 21st of the Seventh Hebrew month. This holiday is also known as the “Feast of Tabernacles”. Work is forbidden on the first day of the seven days.

Visit Nehemia’s Wall to read the complete post. Thank you Nehemia!

Feast of Booths is a lot of fun. We cut palm fronds and olive and eucalyptus branches and decorate our veranda with this.

With Sukkot we remember and celebrate the years that the Jewish people spent in the desert on their way to the Promised Land. We recall the ways that our Father protected them whilst they traveled through the desert and lived in tents.

More information on Sukkot from our friends at Chabad Org.

Yom Kippur

HOLY  FEAST
YOM KIPPUR

My children asked me what Yom Kippur is all about, so it is for their sake that I wrote this book.

The questions that came up

1. When did Yom Kippur start?

2. What is Yom Kippur all about?

3. When do we celebrate Yom Kippur?

4..Can anyone celebrate Yom Kippur?

5. Is Yom Kippur just for Jewish people?

6. Can Christian people celebrate Yom Kippur?

7. Are we still supposed to be celebrating the Holy Feasts?

To be able to answer these questions I studied the Bible and pulled up references relating to Yom Kippur and atonement, repentance and forgiveness. I studied also how the  Jewish people celebrate Yom Kippur and found that rabbinical traditions do not always correlate with what the Bible, God’s Holy Word, tells us.

The Yom Kippur as described in this book YOM KIPPUR, Day of Atonement, is not written according to Christian traditions, nor is it Yom Kippur according to Jewish traditions.

The Yom Kippur that I describe in my book is the Holy Feast of The Lord. It is HIS Feast, not ours. We’re invited to participate in His Holy Feast.

This Yom Kippur book is based on the directions given by our Father and contains His Words about His Feast as well as (in Chapter Two) a description of Jewish traditions including the Al Chet (confession of sins).

Chapter One

Is Yom Kippur the Holiest day of the year, to be celebrated forever, and is everyone invited?
Chapter Two

Jewish traditions including the Al Chet (confession of sins).
Chapter Three

Biblical references

Yom Kippur book

Traditionally  on Yom Kippur the story of Jonah is read out to remind us of God’s mercy.

Jonah goes to Nineveh

Jonah goes to Nineveh settings quality on our screen is best on 240p but may differ on different screens and can be adjusted on bottom right of screen by adjusting the little wheel next to youtube symbol on the left

Jonah goes to Nineveh

When GOD told Jonah to go to Nineveh to give the inhabitants a chance to save themselves, Jonah tried to run away from the task that he had been given. So much so that he didn’t really care if he would live or die as long as he did not have to tell the wicked people in Nineveh that they could be saved.

As far as he was concerned they were bad people who deserved what was coming to them and he was not prepared to help save them from their fate.

Jonah tried without much success to hide from GOD; he was thrown out of the boat, swallowed by the whale, spat out on the beach and eventually did as he was told.

Jonah sulked when people were forgiven

Soon after Jonah delivered his message to the people of Nineveh they felt bad enough about their wicked deeds to ask GOD to forgive them. And GOD forgave them. This made Jonah even more upset than he had been before and he went to sulk outside of the city in the shade and told GOD, “It is better for me to die than to live.” Jonah wished death upon himself because he was so very angry that GOD forgave wicked people after they asked him for forgiveness.

Jonah experienced GOD’s compassion himself when he was forgiven after running away from GOD. And when he consequently was thrown into the sea and swallowed by a whale and yet lived. GOD even grew Jonah a large plant to shade him from the hot sun whilst Jonah was feeling sorry for himself. Yet Jonah struggled to understand why GOD would forgive evil people even though they showed some measure of remorse for their bad deeds.

Jonah felt sorry for a plant which withered but couldn’t forgive people who showed remorse after they had done the wrong thing.

GOD is merciful and responds to remorse

Jonah said “I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.”

The book of Jonah teaches us about God’s mercy and is read in its entirety during the Feast of Yom Kippor which is the day of atonement as mentioned in the bible.

Jonah – A Lesson in Compassion by Rabbi Dr Greg Killian

Rabbi Dr. Greg Killian tells us in his study “Jonah – a lesson in compassion” that “Yonah son of Amittai was the son of the widow from Tzorphath with whom Elijah the prophet stayed during the years of famine, and that it was this boy that Elijah revived.”

Yonah’s mother was from the tribe of Asher, and his father from Zevulun.

Amittai is derived from the Hebrew word: ‘emet’, meaning truth. From this we understand that Jonah (Yonah means dove in Hebrew) is a man of truth. Truth, as Jonah understands it, demands that evil never be overlooked; evil must be punished. Jonah is the “son of truth”, a man of unbending commitment to the truth. This may explain Jonah’s stance that evil must be punished. He was struggling to comprehend GOD’s compassion for evil people even though he experienced GOD’s mercy himself.

The story of Jonah teaches us to be compassionate towards one and other.

Jesus said, blessed are the merciful because they shall obtain mercy.

OM KIPPUR

How Yom Teruah became Rosh Hashana

GOD’S HOLY FEAST

Post from Nehemiah Gordon. Find the full post here.

Yom TeruahHow Yom Teruah became Rosh Hashana by Nehemia Gordon

On the 1st day of the Seventh Month (Tishrei) the Torah commands us to observe the holy day of Yom Teruah which means “Day of Shouting” (Leviticus 23:23-25; Numbers 29:1-6). Yom Teruah is a day of rest on which work is forbidden.

YOM TERUAH.png

One of the unique things about Yom Teruah is that the Torah does not say what the purpose of this holy day is. The Torah gives at least one reason for all the other holy days and two reasons for some.

The Feast of Matzot (Unleavened Bread) commemorates the Exodus from Egypt, but it is also a celebration of the beginning of the barley harvest (Exodus 23:15; Leviticus 23:4–14). The Feast of Shavuot (Weeks) is a celebration of the wheat harvest (Exodus 23:16; 34:22). Yom Ha-Kippurim is a national day of atonement as described in great detail in Leviticus 16. Finally, the Feast of Sukkot (Booths) commemorates the wandering of the Israelites in the desert and is also a celebration of the ingathering of agricultural produce (Exodus 23:16). In contrast to all these Torah festivals, Yom Teruah has no clear purpose other than that we are commended to rest on this day.

Go to Nehemia’s Wall to read the complete post. Thank you Nehemia!

How to divide up your day for balance

MY STORY OF SURVIVAL – How to avoid stress and have a balanced day?

How to divide up your day in a balanced way?

How to have a balanced day?

All of us have twenty-four hours in a day. A busy Mum may not have as many choices with regards to how she divides up her day, compared to director of a large firm. But to some extent we all have choices.

The main thing to keep in mind is to balance the hours of work with sleep and the hours of chores with fun.

When I was younger I slept for nine hours every night without waking once.

At some stage in my thirties, everything had become hard work and even scheduling in for time out with the children had become a chore and hard work. All I ever wanted to do was catch up on sleep.

Looking back now, I can see that I did not sleep properly for years and years. I would only catch little naps here and there in between breast feeding and taking care of the household and later on the clinics also. Sleep was a luxury which I felt that i couldn’t afford.

I was so severely sleep deprived that i had rats crawling over me at night… or so I thought. The registrar at the hospital labelled these experiences ‘hallucinations due to severe sleep deprivation.”

Thrive

Ariana Huffington from the Huffington Post would probably have some idea of what I’m talking about. One day, she fell asleep on her desk from exhaustion and broke one of her cheek bones. She is now an ardent advocate for people living balanced lives with enough sleep factored in as mentioned in her book ,”Thrive; The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Happier Life.”

To be able to thrive, it is a good idea to start off by figuring out how many hours sleep we need per night. Most people need between seven and nine hours sleep each night to function optimally throughout the day. All of my elderly friends in their eighties and nineties  sleep nine or more hours a day.

Once you figure out how many hours sleep you need, you can add to this the amount of hours you work each day. When you subtract the sum total of work and sleep hours, from the 24, you’re left with the amount of hours available for chores and fun or leisure time.

How to divide up your day?
WORK

So how should you divide up your day? That’s up to you to decide. I am giving you a template that I try to live by and I am still convalescing. So what do the eight hours work a day mean for me? These are the hours where I do my exercises, thank you Geoff Dakin! and tell my body to unlearn bad habits and incorporate more beneficial habits from now on. I see local therapists who also help me get back on my feet. During my eight ‘work’ hours I work on creating a life that is more wholesome and BALANCED than the life I previously led and which got me into trouble. I read up on how to handle my stresses and closely monitor my diet to grow back strong muscles and bones and organs. It’s hard work but I’m loving every moment of it.

The purpose of dividing up your day

When I was in my twenties I worked really hard. See a pattern here? I worked so hard that when I came home from work I was so exhausted that after dinner I would fall straight asleep. I did this for a period of around seven years. I would leave for work at seven in the morning to beat the peak hour traffic and return at around 6 o’clock at night. By the time I had eaten dinner I often would be asleep before the washing of the dishes.

One day I came across an article that said, ‘We all have the same amount of hours in a day.’ I thought about that for a little while and wrote down on a serviette what I did with my days. It looked something like this.

Wake up.png

Work and travel added up to 11 hours and sleep added up to 9.5 hours and eating and showering added up to around two hours per day.

I had been doing this for SEVEN years and then I decided that I wanted more out of life and carved out a two hour slot each day where I would practice writing. Every day I started to look forward to my writing exercises. I signed up to a course to study writing and straight after dinner I would sit for two hours studying my ‘Traveling Journalist’ course. Funny enough I managed to stay up for this and once I went to sleep I wouldn’t feel as exhausted as I used to, prior to studying Travel Journalism.

This episode in my life taught me an important lesson. Dividing up my day and figuring out where my time went was really useful to me. It showed me what was possible and where I could factor in some joy and fun.

It is REALLY important to factor some fun and joy and educational time into your day. Doing the course made me feel alive and everything else seemed easier because of it. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my day job and I loved my husband and overall this was a good period in my life. But much as I loved my job, it was very demanding with long hours due to the daily commute.

Years later, when I became pregnant with my eldest, I learned another important life lesson and that is, that sleep is REALLY important too.

It’s all about balance

Michael Hyatt, one of my mentors, has designed an ideal week template which I highly mh-ideal-weekrecommend. You can check it out here.

For me, leading a fulfilling life is all about getting the balance right. Keep everything in balance!  Love to hear how you do that.

How to avoid stress?

MY STORY OF SURVIVAL – How to avoid stress?

How to deal with stress?

I haven’t always dealt so well with stress. I still do not always deal very well with stress. but I’ve come up with a formula to deal with my stresses that works most the time.

Why is is that some people deal well with their stress and others not so well? In the end we all have 24 hours in a day to deal with whatever comes our way. I read up on the subject of stress to get a better handle on it and deal with it in a more mature way. My Story of Survival will give you a taste of what can happen when stresses aren’t managed or eliminated.

I may include this in the next edition of My Story of Survival. I only came to this formula on reflection and not whilst I was writing.

My favourite book that I turn to for advice, is the Bible and during my period of convalescence I created Scripture Cards  for comfort and advice, which you can send to your friends for free online or purchase in a set of 24 cards.

Favourite Books

In addition to the Bible I also read other books which help me deal with challenging situations in my life. Over the last year I have come across a few gems and like to share these with you.

BOOKS  AND BLOGS  WP FEATURE –  Quick and easy free tutorial for successful authorsQuick and easy free tutorial kit for successful authors How to

Simultaneously post to the BIG 5

Nifty WP feature

As we market our goods and services, we’re told that it is a good idea to write regular blog posts. I’ve discovered that not many people are aware of this nifty WP feature where you can post to the BIG 5 social media networks in one go.

When I mention the BIG 5, I am referring to the high traffic social media networks Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and WordPress.

You need an account with all of these to be able to make a post on any of them.

Once you’ve set up your accounts with the BIG 5, go to your WordPress account and write a blog post.

When I write on my WordPress Blog this is set to automatically share with my Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In and Google plus accounts. How sweet is that?

How to simultaneously post to the BIG 5?

The feature to automatically share my post on my other social media is found on the left of my WP portal beneath the Sharing button.
