Passover special and From Slavery to Freedom
It is the Passover!
To celebrate the Passover I am sharing the Passover Special with Nehemia Gordon and friends and also ‘From Slavery to Freedom’ from Nehemia Gordon’s website.
This is an interview that Nehemia had with Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski who draws on his vast experience as a world-renowned Rabbi and psychiatrist to explain why it is important to get out of our comfort zone in order to achieve true spirituality.
Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski is the author of over 70 books and a canonical Jewish prayer sung in every synagogue, Rabbi Twerski’s stature in the Jewish world parallels that of Billy Graham in the Christian world. He opens the episode singing a Psalm, shares how he once saved a man by getting a special dispensation from the Pope, and describes a practical plan to break the chains of spiritual slavery in order to attain true freedom and maximize our full potential and purpose in life.
For your convenience, Nehemia includes a transcript of the conversation, with links to the many terms, concepts and books mentioned, for further study. You can access the interview here.
Nehemia also includes a traditional karaite matzah recipe which traditionally is eaten in all Jewish homes during the Passover. You can access the recipe here.
To find out what the Passover is all about, read the Book of Exodus in your Bible and from the Gospels Matthew 26 and Luke 22.

Child Under Fire: Finding God’s Victory for a Child in Distress
Child Under Fire: Finding God’s Victory for a Child in Distress
CHILD UNDER FIRE as written by Kate Chattic.
BOOK DESCRIPTION
Is your child out of control? Do you fear him?
You are not alone. I want you to avoid the mistakes I made and find God’s peace much sooner than I did. I want to give you hope and encouragement to keep going!
Do you want to keep the problem hidden?
If we could just learn to trust each other and share our struggles, they may grow lighter. Too often, when we share what has happened (or is happening!), we are simply met with condemnation and harsh criticism. I decided to face that fear of trusting enough to share my story because I thought it might help someone else. This is not as easy as it sounds, but I have opened my heart to you in telling my story.
This book is the story of my pain, immaturity, emotions, joys, victories, and most of all, my learning experience as I let God mature me and change my heart through a spiritual battle.
You may find the answers for your distressed child, BUT more importantly, this is not a “parenting guidebook” or a self-help book. This is my story, both the ugly and the pretty parts, meant to be an encouragement to keep going. Don’t give up and don’t withdraw from your situation.
MY REVIEW
Intense and painful story. Heartbreaking really. But she persevered and it worked out in the end. With God, there is always mercy and hope. Beautiful message. I sympathise Kate! Well done for not giving up and trusting in The Lord.
Trust in the Lord and know that the experiences in our life will help us become better people if we allow HIS mercy and love to shine through.
Thank you for sharing Kate.

Mary and the Alabaster Box
Mary and the alabaster box.
Her sins are forgiven for she loved much.
Some say that there are a couple of different eye witness accounts of the event of “Mary and the alabaster box” in the bible. We think that there may be four versions. The first account is by Matthew, the second by Mark and we believe the third and fourth accounts are given by Luke and John. Have a read and see what you think for yourself.
Dr James Tabor who is Professor of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina (Christian origins and ancient Judaism) has an interesting blog post on Mary for those who like to read a more in-depth study on the different versions.
What we know is, that when Jesus says that we’ll be remembering Mary, he isn’t talking about his mother. Jesus is talking about another woman called Mary and he says that “her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much.”
Mary and the alabaster box
We love the story about Mary and the alabaster box so much that we decided to do a song about it. Years ago when we started to read the bible in earnest we were so excited to discover GOD’s rule book. As in, pfew … there are indeed standards in place that we are supposed to live up to as lovers of GOD’s Word. And we were no less excited to find that, hey, there is forgiveness if you do the best you can and yet occasionally muck up.
Mary and the alabaster box
lyrics from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
She put the ointment of spikenard very costly.
She put it on his body for his burial.
Mary wrought a good work on Jesus.
Let her alone.
She done what she could.
Mary wrought a good work on him.
An alabaster box of very precious ointment.
She poured it on his head as he sat at meat.
She done what she could.
She wrought a good work on him.
Mary wrought a good work on Jesus.
Let her alone.
She done what she could.
Spikenard very costly.
With her hair she wiped his feet.
She did it for his burial.
It’ll be told for a memorial.
Matthew’s version
She hath wrought a good work upon me.
Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, there came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
Mark’s version
Let her alone; why trouble ye her?
She hath done what she could.
And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.
And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
Luke’s version
Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much
Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat. And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner. And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
John’s version
Mary anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair.
The poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
Jesus reiterated what the prophet Ezekiel told us centuries ago.
All of scripture tells us about GOD’s grace and his forgiveness and long-suffering nature. On the Sabbath yesterday we listened to another excellent Torah Pearl hosted by Jono from TRUTH2U Radio with guests Keith Johnson and Nehemia Gordon. And one of the references which was mentioned with regards to God’s forgiveness is in Ezekiel where we are told that what counts is the actions we take today. What matters is not where we were or what we did in the past. What matters to the Creator of Heaven and Earth is who we are today. And the actions we take this very day is what determines our destiny.
Jesus prophesied that Mary’s actions would be remembered.
Jesus said, “this, that this woman hath done, shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.” If we assume that the four different versions mentioned above all relate to the same event, then Jesus spoke about Mary the sister of Lazarus when he said these words. Jesus did not say that we’ll be remembering and honouring his mother who was also called Mary.
I want to make this distinction because I was raised a Catholic. As a Catholic I was taught to pray to Mary the mother of Jesus. This meant for me that I kneeled down in Catholic churches in front of mother Mary statues. As a child, on my way to school, I would often walk into the church, light some candles in front of a mother Mary statue and kneel down on a pew before I’d say my ‘Hail Marys’. This is all right and proper according to the Catholic faith.
During my childhood after we’d been to ‘Confession’ we were told by the priest to say a certain amount of ‘Hail Marys’ and ‘Holy Fathers,’ in order for our sins to be forgiven. The amount of these prayers depended on the multitude and size of our sins. I was educated by nuns. My sins were many, as you can imagine for any primary school aged kid, and therefore my affinity with Mary with the alabaster box great.
What did Jesus say about Mary?
What I am interested in today is not what the Catholic church says about who to remember and how but what God’s Word and particularly Jesus himself says about remembering Mary (and the alabaster box). Jesus does not tell us to kneel in front of a statue of his mum and pray to her. Jesus tells us that we’ll remember Mary the sinner, a woman who made mistakes, just like I did as a child and most of us still do a lot of the time.
The good part.
The great part about this event described in scripture is that Jesus tells us that Mary did a good work, that she did what she could and for the people around her to leave her alone and not criticise her actions. Mary is called a sinner which shows us that she mucked up and probably more than once. Yup, I can relate. And this Mary anointed Jesus ahead of his burial and kissed and washed His feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Jesus says, don’t trouble this woman, she has done a good work on me.
We’re told by Jesus that we’ll remember a Mary who made mistakes but also loved much and had faith. She simply did what she could. And we’re told that because of her good work, love and faith, her sins were forgiven her and Jesus tells her to go in peace.
That means there is hope for all of us. And I reckon that is good news, if ever I heard any.

REVIEW
Choose faith over fear
This lady has done her research re food and GMO and organic and why to choose one over the other.
In her book Christine shares her 4-principle approach to becoming unstuck and fully charged in life through God’s teachings.
She does this by addressing body image, thought and emotion issues and inspiring people to live fully charged, happy lives. What I really like is how Christine draws the analogy between food and how and why certain foods serve you better than others and she links this in with God’s purpose for us and our life.
I’ve studied nutrition quite intensely and have come to the understanding that there is way more to food that we realise. Oranges grow close to the sun, ‘when we eat oranges we get vibrant energy’ and more little gems like that.
I agree with Christina that God has a purpose for our life and all we need to do is heed that call to live a fulfilling life. Christine’s book helps us find out how to.
‘Faith your way to happy’ is not just another inspiring read but gives us steps to follow so that we can live our purpose.

The years pass quickly and when we don’t feel like we can achieve our dreams we become challenged by our frustrations.
Stress chokes the happiness from our lives, while the financial cost of its treatment is enormous. Even the World Health Organisation says that stress has become one of the leading causes of disease.

What’s stopping you from waking up every morning full of energy and enthusiasm for the day ahead?
MY REVIEW
Let’s get this out of the way first. The title irked me. I hadn’t benefited from stress. My whole life fell in a heap because of stress. Benefiting from stress?
I cannot explain how or why, but as I kept reading the wisdom and insights and personal stories .. the dots connected.
I was convinced that I was ‘on top’ of my stresses, managing them very well, and dealing with them in appropriate ways. I’ve been through major stresses in my life and I’ve learned to deal with stress to make them manageable.
And then it hit me. These unavoidable stresses in one’s life; you can actually minimise them! Or maybe even get rid of some, or most of them, altogether. It is because of how Robyn looks at stress and deals with it in such a wholesome way that I started, despite my initial reluctance, appreciate the benefit of stress.
Wow, that was a real eye-opener to me.
Thank you Robyn, for such an informative guide with practical steps for improvement. I will print out your six daily success rituals and stick them on my bathroom mirror.
This is the first day of a whole new beginning for me.

RELATIONSHIP REHAB
And the Lord formed man
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul … And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Genesis 2
And they lived happily ever after … if only. Being in a marriage can be one of the most rewarding things in life … or for some, the worst.
If all is not working out for you, and even if it is, I just bought ‘Relationship Rehab’ by Barry Watson. I thought this to be a fitting gift for my girls on Valentines Day. Don’t laugh because I take relationships seriously and I think this book would be excellent preparation before getting into a long-term relationship.

Does your relationship seem miles away from where you idealistically imagined it would
be? Have the pleasant discussions you once had together been replaced with silence or continual arguments? Do you feel as if you and your partner have slowly drifted away from the love and romance you once shared?
If this is you, you aren’t alone! Many couples experience times in their relationship where they struggle to get along, and wonder whether the effort is worth the reward. The reality of life is that building a great relationship is a challenge! It takes a lot of skill and work to have a great relationship, and get it back on track when you have difficulties. Skills like this aren’t taught in school. Many times you are sadly left to find your own answers, or worse, learn from the pain of getting it wrong.
In this book “Relationship Rehab,” Barry Watson outlines a very practical approach to rescue and revive your marriage or dating life. This book is filled with many easy to apply tips on how you can avoid many common mistakes, and how to build the type of relationship you want. If your relationship is important to you, then this book will give you the confidence and skills to make it great.
MY REVIEW
This book is filled with wonderful advice for dating and married couples. There’s a free 90-day roadmap and coaching video and the book also includes a practical list of expectations couples can have of each other.
I find this list of expectations super useful and will share this with my children because to be able to find common ground to agree on, we need to be aware of the expectations that happen on a moment to moment basis.
What touched me most in this book is Barry’s eagerness and willingness to make his relationship work and make things happen. I was really moved by that.
I highly recommend this book to anyone in any kind of relationship, pre-during-after marriage because there are so many insights and practical steps given that even the most reluctant spouse may be won over to give it a try.

LIKE A GIRL
BLOG TOUR OF LIKE A GIRL ANTHOLOGY
This week I’m participating in a blog tour celebrating the publication of the Anthology ‘Like a Girl.’
The Anthology is traveling from blog to blog and just arrived from Jeanette O’Hagan‘s and Paula Vince blog.
Paula is an author, blogger, reader, reviewer, mother of three. All this goes under the mantle of ‘stay at home mum’. She also loves walking and cooking when the mood strikes her. Getting stuck into a good book has always been one of the best things ever.
After featuring on my blog the tour will continue on to Lynn Fowler’s blog on the 29th of January.
BOOK DESCRIPTION
Fourteen Authors from around the world have contributed their stories to raise money for PLAN Australia. ‘Like a Girl’ is a celebration of the strength and resilience of women, told in a variety of genres and voices, the proceeds of which will help empower girls and women all over the world.
EXCERPT
EDUCATION STARTS AT home
This Story is dedicated to my daughters and their peers
Take nothing for granted but plan, plan, plan.
Why I wouldn’t give my daughter my unpicker.
This morning my daughter asked me for an unpicker. In case you don’t know what an unpicker is I looked up the dictionary definition of the word unpicker. When I typed it in what came up was the word seam ripper, which is another word for a small tool used for unpicking stitches.
I asked my daughter if she had what it took to be in possession of an unpicker and was met by a blank gaze. So I explained to her that it takes an extraordinary amount of resolve, self-restraint, patience, organisation, sense of priority and determination to be the proud owner of an unpicker.
You can only use one unpicker at a time
I explained to her that, once you realise that you are unpickerless it usually takes around two to three months of being in this unpickerless state before the average person takes positive action to resolve it. During that period of two to three months you fret and think about where you possibly could have put it; did someone ‘borrow’ it and not return your unpicker? And you’re left wondering if you have lost this precious tool forever. If you were to visit the haberdashery store in this period of time you are likely to forget whilst you’re in the store that you are in fact unpickerless.
And even if you were to remember whilst in the store that perhaps you don’t own this valuable instrument any longer, this unpickerless state is precarious because none of us is so stingy as not to be willing to spend $2.95 to be in the possession of an unpicker. But few of us are prepared to spend this money if in fact we already have one because, let’s face it, you can only use one unpicker at a time.
Having said that, I remember a brief blissful period where I literally splurged on 4 unpickers. One for each of my daughters, one for my husband (who never used one, this was my spare) and one for me.
Blissful it was but more than blissful it was brief because, due to Murphy’s Law, everyone’s unpicker without ever having been used, ended up within the shortest period of time, either blunt or vamoosed. Which, yes you guessed it, meant that everyone else borrowed my sharp shiny brand new red unpicker whilst all I managed to find were the dud blunt unpickers. Strangely this happened in a household where I am the only occasional seamstress.
Being unpickerless is hazardous
However I am digressing. I explained to my daughter that the period of time it takes to determine that one truly is unpickerless is one of the more hazardous periods of one’s life. This is because I now make do with either a blunt old unpicker, which is likely to dig itself into my fingers during my futile attempts to make it work. Or similarly risky, I will use my sharpest little pair of scissors or knife which comes with its own obvious hazards, jeopardising my willing but not always skilful attempts to make things work.
On average this unpickerless period in my life lasts from between a few weeks up to a number of months.
Clean out of unpickers and seam rippers
If my memory serves me well, once it is well and truly established that I am unpickerless, one of the following scenarios will unfold. I finally manage to make it to the local haberdashery store, which by the way is always out of my regular route. The local haberdashery store usually is a popular place where ladies catch up on all the latest and chances are that it will be a while before it is my turn.
After I humbly ask the lady behind the counter where the ‘unpickers’ are, she will respond, “Do you mean a seam ripper?’’ To which I meekly will nod, yes.
This lovely lady with her shiny black hair at the ‘Sew-For-Fun’ store is likely to disappear behind her counter through the backdoor and not resurface for a minimum of five or ten minutes. She will disappear for the kind of period of time where you know for a fact that she is not looking for a seam ripper but checking Facebook notifications on her mobile phone whilst talking to her boyfriend and downing a cup of coffee or gobbling down a slab of chocolate.
After this, she will return to the counter smiling benignly and tell me that they are “clean out of un-pickers at the moment.” When will the next batch be in?
Let’s assume that I dare ask her when she expects the next batch of unpickers to come in. I probably daren’t, but let’s assume for a moment that I will. This wonderful junior in training will respond with a shrug, telling me that she doesn’t know when the rep will come in next, or she thinks it is Thursday next week but she doesn’t know for sure, and she cannot guarantee when the next batch of unpickers will come in.
This is the best case scenario, if indeed I dared ask her when she would expect the next batch of unpickers to come in. It is more likely that if I did have the nerve to do this, that she would go looking for her supervisor for the next 20 minutes or so whilst I had no other choice than to patiently wait at the counter for her return, and she would tell me that neither she nor the supervisor knew when the new unpickers would arrive.
By now I am thinking that if I were to go through the store called ‘Sew-For-Fun’ I will probably, somehow, somewhere turn up a unpicker but alas, she’s worn me down sufficiently for me to graciously back off and promise to come back in a week or so to see if the next batch has arrived.
Thoughts of melting unpickers
At this point of my story my daughter has lost her appetite for my unpicker, but I am not quite finished yet. I explain to her that indeed it takes a strong person with restraint and fortitude to be the owner of an unpicker. I ask her, if she wonders at all why the store would be clean out of unpickers?
My daughter is now literally walking backwards towards the door, attempting to quietly disappear, but I insist; “Surely you wonder why the store has no unpickers?”
No, she doesn’t. But I do. As a proud owner of an unpicker, I imagine that perhaps a local school needed a whole batch for their sewing class, or a local lady needed a bunch for her charity sewing club.
I explain to my daughter that these thoughts are necessary if one is trying to secure an unpicker for oneself. Because if indeed the local school bought the last batch, we can assume that the rep will return next week with a whole new batch of them. But what if the overseas supplier had run out? Then what? It could be months and months before they would be back in stock. What if the dock workers were on strike and a crate of unpickers are sitting on the dock in the hot sun, desperately wanting, but not able to get to those in need? Would they melt?
‘Do you think about those things?’ I asked my daughter. ‘When you ask me if you can borrow my unpicker, does any of this cross your mind?’
My daughter groans in response. She whispers, ‘Mum, I’m good, I’ll do something else instead.’ But I am not quite finished yet …
MY REVIEW
It was so much fun to have my submissions accepted for this wonderful Anthology. I have two daughters and two of my submissions were accepted. I thought that was very fitting. One for each of my children.
I wish for this anthology to travel far; touching hearts and opening minds wherever it goes.
Thank you Mirren, for this wonderful initiative which will benefit girls and women worldwide.
