Deployment Stories: One BIG happy family

Deployments can be hard, let’s tackle this ugly monster together. Today’s story this spouse is President of the FRG and her husband serves in the navy. Here’s her story…

My husband left for a 9 month deployment in June of 2014. The DAY he left, my youngest found some scissors upstairs (my husband was cutting tags from his shirts that morning before he left and accidentally left them out on the bathroom sink.) Without realizing the scissors were there, I sent my kiddos up to our room to watch a movie while I prepared dinner. 10 minutes later, my sweet little 2.5 year old came down with half of her head almost bald. I freaked out of course and couldn’t believe it! She cut SO much of her hair off. I was actually really sad because she finally had enough hair to put in cute little pigtails.

funfamily

So, while I was figuring out what to do with her and seeing if I could even fix it, my curious and impulsive 4-year-old reached in our fish tank, picked up the fish, and without even realizing it, squeezed too hard and killed it! I seriously had enough and broke down into tears.. I couldn’t figure out how to deal with so much chaos all at once…. ALONE.

Just then, a friend popped by to pick something up and could see how upset I was. She comforted me, started helping me tidy the kitchen and listened to me rant about “how was I even going to make it.. this was the FIRST day!?!” Then, I remembered a fellow military spouse and friend who was a hairdresser and worked out of her home. I messaged her, showed her pictures of Hadley’s new mullet and at 8 pm, she told me to bring Hadley over so she could fix her hair!

Kristin, the friend who stopped by, so graciously offered to watch my other kiddos while I rushed Hadley over to Audrey’s house. An hour later and one adorable SHORT pixie cut later, I was back at home feeling much better about the situation.

In conclusion, What I learned from that night is how important friends are. Fellow military spouses have proven to me time and time again how much a community can really help. I learned that a simple gesture can make a huge difference in a stressful situation. I am thankful for the friends I have made since my husband joined the military! So, as I flushed poor Mr. Bubbles down the toilet that night when all the kids were finally asleep, I couldn’t help feel a huge sigh of relief that the first day was OVER and wondered what other crazy things would happen over the next 8 months.

Deployment Stories: A Mother’s Promise

Deployment stories is a way for military spouses to connect with other spouse, encouraging and inspiring stories of trials and victories during deployment. Letting them know if this spouse can do it, I can do it! In this story, this is spouse is a mom to 3 children and her husband is in the navy. She shares a story about keeping her promise to her daughter starting school, while her spouse is on deployment.

DDmom2

Our oldest daughter was 5 years old the first time my husband went on deployment. We had just moved to CA and she was just starting Kindergarten so her separation anxiety was at an all time high. She made me promise that I would be there everyday to drop her off and pick her up from school. So of course I promised! A week after my husband left my car started acting up. Of course.

That day I dropped my daughter off for kindergarten like any other day, I had errands to run and was serving all day. It was getting close to time to pick her up so I headed to the school when my car died! I called road side assistance but they couldn’t get anyone out for an hour! My daughters school let out in 30 minutes. I tried calling everyone I knew at the time was 3 people! (LOL) but no one was available. Ten minutes went by and panic started to creep in. In that moment a Police officer pulled up behind me and I thought oh great that is all I need! Here I am stranded with my other daughter sleeping in the back seat, and had to be there to pick up my oldest in 20 minutes now. As the officer approached I started to cry! Which is so unlike me but I just felt overwhelmed!

The officer asks what was going on because I was impeding traffic. I told him what was happening. My car stalled, tow company coming (now 50 minutes wait), and I needed to be there to pick up my daughter! All while sobbing uncontrollably! He walked back to the squad car and I thought great, what now? When he comes back he tells me he called a local tow company and the guy would be here in 10 minutes, and now we had to get my daughter car seat and all into his squad car because he was going to take me to the school to get my daughter! I just hugged him! He looked at me and said he was a father and a husband and if he was ever unable to help his wife he would hope someone would extend the same kindness to them! I called the school and told them I was going to be late to pick up my daughter but to tell her I would be there! It was my first time riding in a squad car and the first time anyone had been dropped off at my daughters school in a squad car! (LOL).

In Conclusion: I got to keep my promise and now I have an awesome story to tell!

How to start a bible study with your children

In my years of growing up in my mother’s house, I didn’t go church or learn about God until later in life. I never really heard of people doing bible study at home with their family or children until I started going to church regularly. Even then, I still didn’t know how to start one. I really just depended on the Sunday school teacher, at my church, to teach my kids the bible and if my kids had questions, I would gladly answer them.

HowtoBibleStudy

I’ve always wanted to do it but I’ve always felt inadequate to teach my children because I was learning myself. I felt like what CAN I teach my kids, when I barely knew the bible. My husband was always working and deploying, so it was hard for Him to actually start anything. Recently, I just had a burning in my heart to really start a bible study in my home for my kids.

My pastor, at my church would challenge us to do better in teaching our children the word of God. I felt a strong conviction in my heart to do something about this. I want to be able to teach my children the word of God and help them develop a relationship with the Lord. My end goal is that they are equipped to develop a relationship with the Lord, and I want to show them what that looks like. I pray and hope through the bible they would understand how much God loves us, Understand God and to develop that relationship during hard times, because it’s during the hard times where we really grow in Him and in our character.

Biblestudy1

As the Lord, was creating in me a passion to teach my kids the word, I was looking for resources to help me understand how to get started, there are so many resources but there was one that I was looking for that really spoke to my children and I.

The Plans I Have For You Devotional and The Plans I Have For You Journal are two resources that helped me during bible study for my kids to get a closer look to developing that relationship.

9780310725220.jpg

The devotional is an illustrated 90-day devotional written by bestselling children’s book author Amy Parker and illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton, teaching and inspiring kids to dream about their future, to focus on faith, love, and joy, and recognize that God has a plan and purpose for each and every one of us. I LOVE this because this is exactly what I’m looking for.

9780310725220.jpg

The journal prompts creative thinking and exploration of the talents and personalities that make us special, and then helps explore how God may use our unique traits to spread love and joy and make the world a better place. I LOVE this Journal because my daughter LOVES to write and she is getting into that Pre-teen stage and is discovering more and more about her personality and how God made her.

Starting a bible study with my kids has developed great conversations as a family and has really, strengthen my faith as well, knowing that God is with me, guiding me in this process of starting something new with my children and family.

Biblestudy2

This is my son, asking questions about the bible study

Here’s how to get started:

– Before getting started, pray and seek God, what is He showing you in your family, when it comes to bible study?

– Talk to your spouse about it. My husband and I both are on board, when it comes to how to share the word of God with the kids, we were both in prayer about it.

– Seek out resources on teaching your kids about the bible. I was looking for something that really adjusted how real God is and how it applies to our everyday life.

If you are looking to start your own Family Bible study, I am giving away the Plans I Have For You Devotional and Journal so you can give to your child and start a bible study in your home for your family.

Discipline in a Long-Distance Race

Need encouragement to continue the race? It can get exhausting, tiring, make you want to quit, or stop all together. I’m here to encourage you along the way. DO NOT QUIT!!! You can do this!

Building anything of worth, is not an over night success. For this thing to last, you must keep going. You cannot stop.

Discipline in a Long-Distance Race

MAY 6-10 , 2016

I like to define discpline has consistent energy toward a habit, whether good or bad, you’re putting all your energy toward a particular behavior consistently. This year, lets have discpline, consistent discipline, that can help you endure in the long run, during a race.

Hebrews 12:2-3 (MSG)

“…..It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins . Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!”

James 1:2-4 (MSG)

“Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.”

No matter that it is, hang on, don’t quit and KEEP MOVING.

Quick cleaning tips for working & busy moms #momsmeet #MurchisonHume

Clean, Clean, Clean as moms that stay home with our children all day, it seems like that’s all we as moms do, is cook, clean, laundry and sleep then start it over again, doing the same job over and over.  Then add in building a business your passionate about. I read a lot of posts about time management schedules and organizational tips to better organize my home. I came up with SUPER easy, tried and true, quick cleaning tips to help you get your day started.

clean-571679_1920

Do one load at a time– I’ve found doing laundry one load at a time, helps me stay organize, helps me to know how many loads are left for me to do, gives me the opportunity to know that I’m almost done and motivates me to finish.
Make up your bed in the morning, your room is 80% done.- I’ve read the book, “A woman after God’s own heart” by: Elizabeth George. She mentioned in the book how to organize your home, was to first make up your bed, because research showed that you are 80% done with organizing your bedroom. I know I’m motivated to do the 100% in getting the room cleaned.
Have a routine– For me having a routine helps me to get the house cleaned and my family happy. Tuesdays is sweep and mop day, Wednesdays, is clean cabinets, Saturdays, I vacuum and do the bulk of the cleaning and Sundays, I do nothing but do a little bit of clean up and get ready for the rest of the week.
Use essential oils (Helps to boost mood and disinfect)– Cleaning with essential oils can disinfect, kill viruses and bacteria, to name a few and at the same time fragrance your and lift your mood. Using essential oils such as: Peppermint, Lemon and/or tea tree oil.
If you have older kids delegate– Yes, my older children are 11 years old, they help with dishes, take out the garbage, clean their room, their bathrooms, iron their clothes and more. It helps a lot!
Sweep and/or mop your dirt traffic outside of the room– While you are sweeping the room, sweep in the direction out of the room, helps to stay motivated and you clean faster.
When you are trying to organize, here’s a rule of thumb, if you can’t use it now, throw it out– In my house, I’m known to quickly throw things to away to “Organize” and clean. I literally live by this rule, if you are not able to use it now, throw it away. Lets clutter and more organization.
You can also use dryer sheets to fragrance your car– I’ve done this when using dryer sheets, I LOVE the smell of it and wanted to be smell it all the time. So I used it in my car and get compliments all the time. I always tell people about this tip, I have older kids and toddlers…You do the math.
Start with one room at a time– For me doing one room at a time, helps me not feel overwhelmed. Doing one room at a time, helps me stay on track and motivated to organize.
Use less soap when washing dishes. Let the water fill up most of the way, than use the soap. When you start washing dishes, you have most of the soap on top then water. I used to be the kitchen hostess at a hotel and I was working with an older woman, who shared this tip with me.

*BONUS*

Use cleaning supplies that sanitize and fragrance your home at the same time. I just want to share a little bit more on number four. Using products that help to fragrance your home can help you stay motivated to clean the whole house. By using these products by Murchison-Hume. Murchison-Hume was created by former Fashion Editor and mother of two, Max Kater when her son developed allergic sensitivities to common household cleaning products. She made it her mission to create products that would be stylish to look at, safe and easy to use and still work just as well as ordinary supermarket brands. Their mission is to create safe, effective and beautiful products. All of their ingredients are of the highest quality and formulations are designed to be highly effective, while maintaining safety and stability.

I was able to clean not only the “Kids” bathroom, with a happy smile on my face.

Clean1a

In addition to cleaning the bathrooms, I was able to do a deep cleaning in the kitchen and the oven with smiles and a positive attitude. Mom’s and/or Dad’s, having a good attitude, a smile on their face, a good smelling home, can easily create a house into a home.

I pray these tips was a blessing to you, What products do you use to help create your house into a home?

Deployment Diaries: A teenagers struggle

This spouse shares a touching story of how her husband went on deployment and how her son, being a teenager handle his dad being away. A lot of military spouses with children at any age has to deal with not only for themselves the emotional strained of their spouse being away, but how do you handle your children’s emotions when it comes to deployment? I Share different stories of how this spouse made it, and how other spouses can give others hope that it won’t be like this forever. I pray this story encourages you to continue during the rough times during deployment.

A Teens struggle

In 2011, my family endured our 7th deployment. By this time, we would have thought as a family we would have had it down. However, each deployment has its own challenges. Our children were getting older and two of them were entering their teenage years. That meant a lot of growing, soul-searching, and raging hormones. Not fun!

My 13-year-old son seemed to struggle the most, with all the changes that were happening within him but he also needed his father during this important time in his life. Luke began to struggle in school with behavior issues and academically. Most of all, He felt abandoned and became very bitter. He was no longer his sweet and funny self.

As his mother, it was very tough to take in, so I overcompensated and tried to fill in the gaps where my husband couldn’t. This only seemed to makes things worse, but I was determined. 3 months had passed by and our son detached himself from my husband completely. When he would call, Luke wouldn’t speak to him and ignored all his emails. It broke my heart for the both of them.

I decided to seek therapy. I thought if a professional therapist could just tell me what to do in order to fix this, I would do it and everything would go back to the way it was with our son. I remember meeting with the therapist for the first time and explaining the situation. I told her everything I was doing in order to fix it, including trying to be a father figure to our son. I will never forget the moment she looked me in the eyes and said, “You can never be his father, so stop trying.” It was exactly what I needed to hear!

That day I realized a lot. Most of all, my son just needed me to be his mother. He needed my love and nurturing during this painful time. My husband tried to connect with our son more and emailed him even though he continued not to respond. We knew he was reading them. Luke began therapy 3 months later and it seemed to help him deal with his emotions. He was less bitter and even spoke to his father a couple of times over the phone.

Homecoming was around the corner, and I was so afraid of what the outcome would be. Would our son shut down? Would he be excited to see his father? Could I handle seeing the tension between them? This was supposed to be the exciting part of deployment, yet it felt bittersweet.

When the ship pulled in and my husband walked down the pier to meet us, I seen our son smile for the first time in a while. That’s when I knew there was hope. I was just so happy that we were a complete family again. I knew it was going to take time to re-connect. My husband was patient with Luke and took the time to get to know him as a teenager. It took time, but Luke finally came around. We started to see the joy in our son again. We all struggle, it’s part of who we are. It’s tough, but I believe that during those times in our lives is when we grow the most!

In conclusion, deployments are hard and you will face challenges you never seen coming. You have to fight to stay connected to your loved ones. Even though you can’t make up for lost time, you somehow pick up right where you left off and keep going.

Deployment Dairies: Twins and no drivers license

My husband has been in the military for about 15 years. This is a new season in our lives right now, he’s getting promoted!!! Because of this, I started to think back to when I first married my husband and through A Lot of trial and errors, I learned my way of navigating the military world. Deployments, deployments, deployments… When I first got married my husband went on SO MANY deployments that it literally broke me, I was devastated, I felt like… “this is what the military is about? I didn’t get married to be single.

Deployment Diaries

Being part of the military, deployments, long work hours and frequent moves, add stress to our marriages, but most damaging is the emotional distance that results from living separate lives sometimes. The Communication is not only long-distance, it is often less intimate, strained, and unreliable, especially with today’s technology, communication is not so reliable.

So, I want to create a series of encouraging stories of women going through tough situations and surviving, stories that will make you laugh, cry and inspired at the same time. Here’s my story:

A new mom of twins and no drivers license
At the time I was 22 years old, a new mom of twins and I just moved from the BIG city of New York, to the country side of Beaufort, SC. I’ve never been anywhere that didn’t require taking a bus, taxi cab or walking, here in Beaufort, sc I NEEDED a car. When I first arrived there to Beaufort, I was a cute little town, that I couldn’t wait to explore….with my husband. When we moved into our new apartment I was hopeful, happy and excited about my new adventure in this new state, area and life I was beginning with my husband.

I soon realized that in order for me to get around I needed a car, we both had activities we were getting into. My husband worked long hours and I wanted to explore the area I was living in. In between those times, my husband and I had to work around his schedule to teach me how to drive to get my driver’s license. Soon my husband got word that he will be leaving for a 6 month deployment soon. This literally put more pressure on me to learn how to drive and get my license.

So, we’ve been practicing and as much as we could with twins in the car and me making a lot of mistakes, before I go any further, I do need to let you know that, at the time, we only had one vehicle and we had a truck that was a GMC Yukon XL . I had to learn in a HUGE truck and with toddler twins in the car… I made a lot of mistakes.

SO, it came time for me to take the drivers test and to say that I was nervous was an understatement. The instructor DID NOT feel sorry for me either, he was very tough on me. I failed the 1st test AND the 2nd test… Feeling horrible was an understatement. I felt like I was never going to get this license. My biggest problem was parallel parking. So I got one more chance to take this test, if I failed it a third time, I would have to wait 6 months to take it again, I needed to pass this test, before hubby left for deployment. The night before taking the test, I attended a women’s bible study at my church and I asked for prayer to help me. It was awesome how these women gathered around to pray and support me in passing this test.

The day came, and when I walked in I was expecting to see my driver instructor,  he saw me and let me know that he couldn’t test me again because of the amount of times I tested with him. So I was tested my a much nicer instructor and she helped me feel at eased. I passed the test, got my driver’s license and ended my day celebrating with hubby. I survived, the kids survived, hubby left no longer worried about me not having a driver’s license.

I pray that this story, encouraged you made you laugh and so much more. I want others to gain encouragement over these deployment stories and encourage you to tackle yours with confidence. Stay tuned for more stories!

How to beat the winter blues

Here in California it has been extremely chilly, pouring rain, thunderstorms and flash floods. I’m not complaining, California need all the rain we can get. It seems like after the holidays, there’s an excitement for the new year and a little bit of BLAH. I’m actually feeling it myself, I’m excited for 2016, I’m believing and trusting God for some things to happen this year, that I’m really excited about, it’s actually already happening. Since its been so chilly and cold outside, there’s been a since of BLAH. This BLAH feeling is what I want to talk to you about. I came across this Facebook post, I thought was so funny, that goes well with this topic.

Drink some hot tea, with your spouse or with a friend!

Studies have shown that drinking tea such as green tea can help fight anxiety, stress and depression. Also drinking tea with a friend or even your spouse can help fight those winter blues and staying warm.

      2. Move, move, move and move some more.

I know exercise is everyone’s #1 resolution this year, but to fight off the winter blues moving, exercising, just walking around the block can make a difference. Don’t over do it, with extreme exercising but start small just by walking. Instead of walking around the block, if your married, have sex with your spouse. Sex makes a difference as well, cleaning, using new cleaning supplies, motivates me to clean and try new things. My point…Start moving.

     4. Check with a counselor.

If this is something you cannot shake, or move pass, check with a counselor. You can find a counselor in your area here. Counseling is a good thing for all of us to do at times.
