Help Support Local Charity for Abused Women

Many of you will know that I recently co-wrote a book Cutting The Fat with author Jason McIntyre

Jason is currently trying to raise money to help support a local charity for abused women and children. His book On The Gathering Storm deals with the subject of domestic violence.

As someone who used to work as a family lawyer, helping women to obtain injunctions against violent partners, I know how real and serious this subject is. Those of you who have read my book A Time To Tell will know that it is a subject that left an impression on me.
As writers, we often write fiction inspired from events in our daily lives, sometimes almost as a way of dealing with things which are hard to comprehend.

Jason's book is currently $0.99 on Amazon kindle (ebook) until 1st March 2011. Prfits from all sales until that date will go to his local charity, helping women and children flee violent homes and get their lives back on track.

If you are able, please visit Amazon and download the book. I haven't read it yet, but I do know that Jason is a very talented author, so there is little chance that you will be disappointed with the book. If it's not your type of book, you can buy it as a gift. Kindle books can be purchased as a gift for anyone as long as you know their email address.

Remember, you do not have to own a kindle ereader to buy kindle books. Amazon provide free apps for mac, pc, iphone, ipad, blackberry and android.

Here's the link to the page at Amazon where you can read the reviews and purchase the book:

If you are on Facebook or Twitter, or any other social networking sites please spread the word about this.

Thank you for helping.

A Time to Tell - News

I am currently going through the process of preparing to release a second edition of A Time to Tell. I originally self-published this book through a small press, back in 2006 when the internet self-publishing tools were not really available.
I am terminating my contract with Pen Press who initially published the book for me, and will be re-releasing a paperback version through Lulu.com where I published my other books. This will be much easier for me in terms of keeping a tab on royalties and having all my books in the same place.
In the next few months, I will announce the release of the second edition (I will be designing a new cover as well to set it apart from the first edition). In the meantime, I assume there are still copies of the first edition in stock at Amazon and other retailers should you wish to purchase a copy. The first edition will go out of print at some stage, as I've asked the original publisher to cancel that ISBN. I'll be assigning a new ISBN to my new edition.
Hopefully I will publish the new edition without too much delay. I will be reading through it to check for any editing issues, as this is good opportunity to do that, before releasing the new version.
This process will not effect e-books; only the paperback version.

I will be happy when this has been done, and all my books are in my control :)

Writing Goals for 2013

I was looking through my blog posts a while back and came across one that I wrote this time last year about my writing goals for 2012. Here's a link: http://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_...

I accomplished 2 out of 3 which isn't bad. Number 3 was my new short story collection. I had planned to publish that last year, but life gets in the way of these things. Anyway, I'm almost ready to publish that collection, so not too far behind schedule.

Here are my writing goals for 2013:

1. Publish my new short story collection, titled, "Delusion & Dreams, an Anthology". I have decided on the stories that will be included in this new collection. The story "Delusion & Dreams" is a story in four parts. The first part I wrote about a year ago, but when I read it over a couple of months ago I was inspired to continue the story. I ended up writing three more parts to it. I banned myself from writing any more because I didn't want to be writing another novel (I'm already working on one!). Two of the stories in this new collection were rescued from an old floppy disk. I'd written them back in the mid-late '90s. There were several other titles of short stories that showed up on the old disk when I tried to copy them on to my new computer, but there was no data, so either they are lost forever or I have just not found a way to recover the data yet. Time will tell. Quite a few of the other stories for this new collection were found on my computer, dating back a few years at least. I'd originally written them for short story competitions. I have edited all the stories. Two of the stories in this new anthology were stories I discarded from the original ones I wrote for Pieces of a Rainbow. When I read the stories again, I liked them, so although they didn't fit in with what I wanted for "Pieces of a Rainbow", they deserve to be published, in my opinion (I may be biased, of course). I'll be including bonus stories; those that have already been published in the BestsellerBound Anthologies. I thought it would be nice to have all the stories in one place.

2. I would hope to at least be almost ready to publish my new novel by the end of the year. The book is very much in the early stages at the moment, so it depends how much time I get to write this year. The working title is "Illusion", but this could change. It's a fantasy/romance with a splash of rock fiction.

3. I will be publishing a second edition of A Time to Tell sometime this year, hopefully. I've ended the contract with the original publisher who helped me publish the book. I will be self-publishing the second edition through Lulu.com as I have done with my other titles. I thought it made more sense to have all my titles in the same place, and also, this way, I have more control over the book and royalties.

4. I am involved in a joint writing project with the BestsellerBound members. I have already written my chapter, and a few other authors have done too. There are a few outstanding chapters left to write for that project. I'm hoping that the novel will be published this year.

5. Last year I started writing an experimental novel with another author. I'm not sure whether this one will ever see the light of day as we are both very busy, but if it does, it will be something different, and hopefully something our readers will enjoy. As you can tell it's in the 'top secret' stage at the moment.

I will of course keep you updated on all the developments.

A Time To Edit...

I entered a contest recently and won an e-book cover design from Aeternum Designs, a wonderful new book cover design company!

As most of you know, I usually design my own covers, but this win has come at the perfect time for me because I've been having trouble finding a good cover for the second edition of my novel A Time to Tell. The cover for that book was designed by an in-house artist for the publishing company that originally helped me publish, and it's a very nice cover, but because I have terminated my contract with that company I want a completely new cover that will set the new edition apart from the first version.

I've decided to self-publish a new edition of "A Time to Tell" because back in 2006 when I originally published it there were no online resources to allow writers to easily publish their own books, and over the years I have been publishing all my other books through Lulu.com, so I wanted to have all my books in the same place. It just makes things easier.

Anyway, this book cover contest has really motivated me to get going with that second edition of the book. I'm looking forward to seeing what design Aeternum Designs comes up with!

I've started reading through "A Time to Tell", and as I suspected, my urge to edit has raised its head.

When I published the book back in 2006, I was just starting out in my writing career really, and there is quite a difference between how I used to write then and how I write now. I'm enjoying the story (I'd forgotten how much I love this book!), but am finding things that my 'editor's eye' is unhappy with.

The book was edited by an in-house editor at the small press where it was originally published, but they were just looking for things like grammatical errors and typos.

Having read the first few chapters, I can see it was well edited, but things like 'showing' and not 'telling' were not weeded out. Also, there are some repetitive words that I want to eliminate.

Once I am happy with the book, I will be publishing it with a fabulous new cover from Aeternum Designs!

A quick update...

I'm getting ready to publish a new collection of short stories, titled '3'.

As you can guess by the title, there are 3 short stories in the collection. They are all about how memories of the past can haunt the present. All the stories are quite dark.

The main character in each story has a secret or memory that plays a big role in the story.

I am reading through the final version today and will then hopefully be able to send it off to be formatted for Kindle. I'll also be publishing a paperback version through Lulu.com.

In other news...
I am currently editing A Time to Tell so that I can publish a second edition with a brand new cover.

Book & writing news, and an update on my own writing

I realise I haven't blogged much here recently, sorry... To make up for it I'm going to fill you in with lots of interesting stuff that's been going on in the book world. When I say 'the' book world, I mean 'my' book world of course. Not only my books, but books by my favourite authors.

It's been an exciting few months with lots of my favourite authors releasing new books. One I must mention straight away is a FREE Kindle book that came out today! It's Nine Lives

Beautiful cover, isn't it?

You can get a free copy for your Kindle for the next few days from Amazon.

I've read You Wish... and The Other Side, by Terry Tyler, and would not hesitate to recommend both of those to anyone who loves a good book.

Here's the link to Amazon.com, but it's available worldwide: http://www.amazon.com/Nine-Lives-Terr...

Other notable new releases this month are:

Dirty Business by Julie Elizabeth Powell Mercy and the Cat by Jason McIntyre Mystical High (The Desert Series, #1) by Lisette Brodey

I'm looking forward to reading all of those.

Recent books I've read that I would recommend are:

An Eye For An Eye For An Eye by Marc Nash No Justice A Michael Sykora Novel by Darcia Helle Joe Soap by Andrew Peters Savage Rose by Helle Gade Four Paws A Poetry Anthology by The Quillective Project by Ben Ditmars Kiwi in Cat City (Kiwi Series, #1) by Vickie Johnstone

Ooh... I've just realised there's kind of a cat theme going on here, what with Terry Tyler's book cover, Jason Mcintyre's new release, and 'Four Paws', alongside 'Kiwi in Cat City' :)

I'm currently reading, and enjoying, 13, by Julie Elizabeth Powell - a dark fiction/horror novel that really shows how great this author's imagination is (oddly enough, there's a cat in this book too!).

Julie has one of her books on sale until Christmas, Knowing Jack is a wonderful adventure story, and only 99cents at the moment. Here's the link to the book on Amazon.com (it's also available at the reduced price in worldwide Amazon stores): http://www.amazon.com/Knowing-Jack-Ju...

Books that have been sitting on my Kindle for far too long (and which I hope to read very soon), include:

Beyond Salvation A Michael Sykora Novel by Darcia Helle Dream On by Terry Tyler Full Circle by Terry Tyler What It Takes by Terry Tyler Doppelganger (Jack Lockwood mysteries) by Geoffrey David West Miami Snow by Darcia Helle Thalo Blue by Jason McIntyre A Time of Darkness by Dionne Lister ... and about 100 others ;)

Books that I've heard will be released soon and that I'm looking forward to, are:

The Christmas Spirit, by Susan Buchanan

Keep an eye on her blog for the release date: http://www.susancbuchanan.blogspot.co.uk

Fastian, by Jay Finn

Again, details of the release date should be on his blog soon: http://jayfinnauthor.wordpress.com

More news!

1. A writer I met at The Literary Consultancy's recent conference, Laxmi Hariharan, has started writing a series of short stories on UK Asia Online. You can read Bombay Shorts and follow the series, at the following link: http://www.ukasiaonline.com/features-dp1

2. I've just found out about this Kickstarter campaign by a new author, Charles H. Penn, that seems well worth backing. All you science fictions fans, take a look and help this young author realise his dream! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/c...

My writing

Now, a quick update on my own writing. I've been busy editing A Time to Tell, for a second edition. I have a brand new cover for it too, designed by Aeternum Designs http://aeternumdesigns.com/. I'm hoping to be revealing that soon.

I would imagine the book will be released in the early part of 2014.

I'm also working on a new short story collection, as yet untitled, but might be called 'Far Away in Time', which is the title of one of the stories.

Although I haven't yet finished the collection, I think there will be 10 short stories altogether. I have written 7 of those already, and have written the beginnings of the other 3 stories. I'm looking forward to sharing these stories with you all. They range from fantasy to dark fiction.

That's all for now.

If you'd like to keep up with my other blogs, I am currently the main blogger at Bestsellerbound Recommends, which brings you news of all the best indie books and authors: http://quietfurybooks.com/bestsellerb...

And, I blog on the UK Music Directory (and UK Arts Directory): ukmusicdirectory.com/category/blog/ma... - you can find interviews with lots of great bands, ranging from pop, to rock and heavy metal.

End of year round-up

2013 has been a very busy year for me.

Writing:

At the beginning of the year, one of my my plans was to work on my 6th Novel, which I started writing at the end of 2012. However, I haven't written any more of that novel since! I do intend to get back to it soon because I was enjoying writing it.

My main project at the moment is my next collection of short stories. It's mixed-genre. It contains a fantasy story, a mystery, and the rest are all quite dark fiction. It's titled "Far Away in Time". That is, of course, a line from the song 'Echo Beach' (which has always been one of my favourite songs), so being a music fan I couldn't let that pass me by. I have deliberately added some links to that song throughout the book. For example, some of the characters are named after the people who wrote or sang the song; there is a beach that plays an important part in one of the stories; one of the characters bakes some muffins in one of the stories :) (Martha and the Muffins).

The cover of the book will be a photograph by the same photographer who took the photo that is now the cover for my novel "Second Chances". A total coincidence, because I was looking through the website where I usually find royalty-free photos and came across his photo. It's gorgeous and I plan to do a cover reveal shortly.

Second Chances by Maria Savva

This year, I've also been editing the second edition of "A Time to Tell". I have a lovely new cover for that, designed by Kat at Aeternum Designs. I'll be revealing that cover soon too.

I'm hoping that both new books will be published in the first half of 2014.

Blogging:

This year, I started blogging for the UK Arts Directory. They then branched off into the UK Music Directory and I now blog there. I interview bands. Mainly new and independent bands. If you're a music fan you might want to check it out.

My other blog (which I share with Darcia Helle and J. Michael Radcliffe) BestsellerBounds Recommends, has also been keeping me busy as it grows in popularity. We help to promote the best in new independent publishing.

Giveaways:

This month there are a couple of giveaways running where you can win some of my books, so in case you missed those announcements here are the links:

Books Direct: http://quietfurybooks.com/bestsellerb...
You can win an e-book of Coincidences (Lots of other great prizes there too!)

Quiet Fury Books:http://quietfurybooks.com/contests.html
You could win a paperback copy of "3", or e-books of "3", Delusion and Dreams, or Haunted (lots of other great prizes up for grabs there too!)

Finally...

I hope you all have a wonderful festive season and look forward to chatting with you all again in the New Year.

I'll be back in the New Year with a blog about my plans for 2014. Last year, I blogged about my plans for 2013. Out of the things listed, the only one I accomplished was publishing Delusion and Dreams! However, at the time, my book 3 wasn't even planned. I'm really happy with both those short story collections.

Merry Christmas!

Writing Goals 2014

This is the time of year for planning ahead.

Having a few goals to aim for is always worthwhile. It's a great thing for writers to do as it provides a bit of motivation and helps put things into perspective.

My writing goals for 2014 are:

1. To publish my short story collection, Far Away In Time. This is with beta readers at the moment. Having heard back from 4 of my readers, I am reasonably confident that it can be published soon as they didn't find any major errors. By March I hope to have that available for Kindle at least. It will eventually also be available in paperback. I'll be doing a cover reveal for that book shortly.

2. To publish the second edition of my novel 'A Time to Tell'. I ended my contract with the original publisher of that book mainly because I want all my books published in the same way; it's easier for me to have some sort of control that way. I want to re-launch it with a new cover. The cover has been designed by Kat of Aeternum Designs. It looks great and I'm looking forward to revealing that soon.

I am editing the book before re-release. That is going slowly because I have a day job and about 100 other commitments. I'm hoping it will be ready to go to a proofreader in a month or so.

3. I have been approached with an idea for a collaborative project and hope to be working with an author and another creative on a collection of short stories sometime this year.

4. I'm hoping to find time to work on my new novel, currently titled 'Illusion' - I'm sure that title will change.

That's about it, but this time last year I didn't have plans for my collection "3", so anything can happen!
