Allergy Friendly Father’s Day and Allergen Free Food Market Shows no Signs of Slowing
Dear Readers: I want to tell you about a few things. First, my food allergic son Lennon woke up this morning requesting rice cakes with sliced avocado and salt for breakfast. I am both thrilled and confounded by this. I’m thrilled that he leans towards the nontraditional, allergen-free option, but confounded by his lack of craving for protein. Getting enough protein into Lennon is a running problem. He will eat hot dogs, chicken apple sausage, occasionally a fried egg (he is not allergic to eggs, in case you are wondering “WHAT’S SHE TALKIN’ ‘BOUT?!”), and chicken in various incarnations. This week, he’s expressed a love of mild chicken curry, so I made up a pot of Japanese-Style Chicken Curry (recipe to come in the Fall edition of Allergic Living Magazine), to which he declared, “This is some GOOD curry”. I felt triumphant. But it is an ongoing battle to fill him with nutrients to keep him growing.
I wonder how many of you out there experience this too in your daily lives? What sorts of things do you feed your picky eaters? What do you do to fill the protein quota in your food allergic child’s diet? Should I come out with a breakfast protein cookie? Please let me know with a comment about both questions.
The good news is I just came back from the KeHE Distributor show in Chicago, and Free-From options were front and center, as you can see from the “Free-From” display that welcomed attendees the moment they walked through the door. This is a rapidly growing category, which is good for those of us who eat an Allergy-Friendly diet. More and more options will be made available to us, in the next few months, and years.
Upon my return h0me from Chicago, I got the following newsletter from New Hope, with the headline announcing:
Allergen-free food market shows no signs of slowing
I encourage you to check this article out. What other items would you like to see added to those shelves above? I’m listening, intently. And I promise, that what I’ll make you, will taste really really good!

Allergy Friendly Friday 5/31/13 and 6/7/13
I’ve been a very bad blogger. Very bad indeed. All I can offer, by way of explanation, is that sometimes life gets in the way. And boy, oh boy, does it ever. Without getting into the down and dirty details (kids, school issues, too much work, cookie business, out of town event almost every weekend, swamped… you get the picture), please know, I’m coming back.
In the meanwhile, if you just happen to be in the San Francisco area, please join me this SUNDAY, JUNE 2nd, from 12-1 at the Gluten-Free Grocery

Allergy Friendly Mother’s Day
I’m a mother. You probably already know that if you are reading this post. I am the mother of two wonderful boys, Lennon and Monte. And my primary identity is as a mother. First and foremost, that’s what I am.
But on Mother’s Day, I don’t think about myself, and my motherhood. I think about my mother, Susanna. I think of myself as the child, and my mother is the object of celebration.
My mother is turning 70 this year, the day after Mother’s Day. She is coming to visit me. I’m very happy to be able to share both Mother’s Day and her big birthday with her this year. Usually, she’s back East, and I’m here in LA. My mind is already turning, with “What are we going to eat, to celebrate?” I think I will make her a Key Lime pie. I don’t do this very often, because as they say, juicing Key Limes is like milking a mouse. But for my mother, I’ll bust out the old glass juicer, and squeeze those little key limes dry.
What will you be making for Mother’s Day this year? Calling all Allergy-Friendly and/or Gluten-Free Mother’s Day treats!

Allergy Free Vegan Focaccia
Gluten Free Vegan Focaccia
Makes 1 square 9-inch bread
This rustic flat bread is great served with white bean dip or dunked in red sauce. It’s also wonderful dipped in olive oil. Be sure to serve it warm.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups warm water (110°to 115°F)
1 teaspoon agave nectar
1 (1/4-ounce) packet rapid-rise yeast
3 1/2 cups Gluten-Free Bread Flour Mix (see below)
1 tablespoon xanthan gum
1 tablespoon salt
1/4 cup olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons coarse sea salt
1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary
1. Combine the water, agave nectar, and yeast in a large bowl. Mix well. Make sure the yeast is completely dissolved.
2. Whisk together the flour mix, xanthan gum, and salt.
3. Add the flour mixture to the yeast mixture in two batches and mix well for about 1 minute, or until the dough is coming together.
4. Spray a 9 by 9-inch baking pan with baking spray or grease with vegetable shortening and dust with cornmeal, tapping out any extra.
5. Transfer the dough to the pan, using a rubber spatula. Use a frosting spatula to smooth down the surface and coax the dough into the corners of the pan. Cover with a folded dish towel or cloth napkin. Place the pan in a dishpan and pour hot water to come two-thirds up the sides (or just fill your kitchen sink basin). It may float, but don’t worry, that’s fine. Be sure to fold your cloth so it’s not dragging in the water. Let the bread rise for 1 hour. I generally replace the hot water with new hot water after the first 30 minutes. Check it periodically to make sure it’s still quite warm.
6. After the dough has risen for 1 hour, use your fingers to gently make dimples all over the top of the bread. Return the bread to its warm bath to continue rising while you preheat the oven.
7. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Once it’s heated, pour the olive oil over the top of the bread, brushing lightly with a pastry brush to distribute it evenly. Sprinkle the top with the coarse sea salt and rosemary. Bake for about 22 minutes, or until golden on top. Transfer to a cooling rack, turn out of the pan, and let cool for about 15 minutes before slicing.
Gluten-Free Bread Flour Mix
Makes 6 cups
1 1/ 2 cups millet flour
1 1/2 cups sorghum flour
2 cups tapioca starch
1 cup potato starch
Combine all the ingredients in a gallon-size zipper-top bag. Shake until well blended. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Allergy Friendly Friday 3/29 and Cybele’s Free To Eat on the Today Show
Happy Holiday Friday! I’m in a cheerful mood today because I love spring, and I love Easter, because my kids adore their Easter Egg Hunt. I also secretly adore playing the role of my alter ego, the Easter Bunny. My kids figured it out years ago, but we still keep up the charade.
I’m also in a happy mood because my cookies, Cybele’s Free-to-Eat were featured this morning on the Today Show as the healthiest sweet!
