Book Review: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas 5/5

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter navigates between the poverty-stricken neighbourhood she has grown up in and the upper-crust suburban prep school she attends. Her life is up-ended when she is the sole witness to a police officer shooting her best friend, Khalil, who turns out to have been unarmed during the confrontation – but may or may not have been a drug dealer. As Starr finds herself even more torn between the two vastly different worlds she inhabits, she also has to contend with speaking her truth and, in the process, trying to stay alive herself.

Review:

I won’t start this review with a synopsis as I’m in no doubt that most people have heard about this book. The hype was huge, but well deserved.

I always feel a little overwhelmed reviewing an important book. This book is important, and the fact that it needs to exist is a saddening state of affairs for 2018+.

Angie Thomas got the balance right. One minute you’re reading something awful and horrific, then the next you’re laughing. The truth of human nature comes across in this narrative. It also helps the readers digest what they are reading. Seriously, it is needed. I’m still reeling from this book, and my own ignorance.

I read this book as a buddy read with two other reviewers. All of us have rated this read 5*. I think that says it all.

The opinions expressed here are those of K.J. Chapman and no other parties

Zombie Playlist

Today’s book promo is for my zombie novella, Zombie Playlist. It is 26k words of sass, sarcasm, and gore. I thoroughly enjoyed writing my main character in this narrative, and I think she has become my readers most favourite anti-heroine from my books.

For just 1 week, you can get Zombie Playlist at the sale price of 99p from Amazon.

Praise for Zombie Playlist

Teaser Tuesday

I am doing CampNaNo in April. I wasn’t going to, but something took over me and I signed up my current project. I have set myself a realistic 6k words goal which means I have been prepping the WIP for next month and not a great deal of writing has taken place. However, a plot hole is being fixed. When there are big problems I tend to procrastinate, so fixing this one before April 1st was a must for a productive CampNaNo.

Yet, somehow, I do have a teaser for you. I really like this one.

I have decided to do weekly CampNaNo updates once April starts. They’ll be on Sundays. I will still do Teaser Tuesday posts.

Thank You for the Big Ideas!

Firstly, I want to kick off this post with a big thank you to everyone who got in touch with their suggestions on what blog post series they’d like to see on Writerly Bookish Stuff in the future.

I have listened to you all. It’s great to know that some of my previous series received such a great reception.

With that in mind, I shall be holding a picture prompt series and a series about writing a first draft. Both of these series will run in the 2nd half of the year. I’ll let you know more nearer the time

Don’t forget that there is still series two, Character Interviews, to look forward to on Wednesday 10th April. You’ll get to know a little more about my characters over the next ten weeks.

2nd Blog Series of 2019

The second blog series of 2019 is fast approaching (April 10th ). As you can probably guess from the header, this series is all about the characters in my books.

Each week, I’ll interview my character, create a character aesthetic board, and include quotes from the book.

I’m really looking forward to this series as I get to revisit old friends. I hope you enjoy meeting them too.

Depending on what character I’m highlighting that week, the book they feature in will be on sale for 99p until the following week. Sometimes, I’ll throw in a freebie, so keep your eyes peeled!

Thrown to The Blue

This week, I’m focussing on my fantasy book, Thrown to The Blue. Thrown to The Blue was an idea that popped into my head when I was supposed to be drafting EVO Ghost. The idea snowballed, I couldn’t stop writing, and I wrote the last 30k words during a CampNaNo month! I’m very proud of how this book turned out.

I’m offering you a chance to grab a copy of Thrown to The Blue for free until March 24th! Get your copy from Amazon now.

The feedback for Thrown to The Blue was a huge confidence boost for me to go on and write my first zombie novella, Zombie Playlist.

Praise for Thrown to The Blue:

KJ Chapman has created a fantasy world on a par with Game of Thrones, intricately detailed.’ – Amazon review.

An impressive narrative that is not afraid to be different. It is a daring fantasy that will leave you reeling long after the last chapter’ has been read.’ – Amazon review.

‘Ezra is the perfect heroine- independent, fiercly strong-willed, and protective.’ – Goodreads review.

Title Reveal

Now that my Teaser Tuesday posts are well underway, and I have been posting teasers from my current WIP, I thought it time to do a title reveal.

The blurb and cover reveal will be a little while yet, as I haven’t even finished the first draft. I’m hoping April’s CampNaNo will help me with that!

Enough chatter, KJ, what did you call the damn book?…

Zombies and Budgie Smugglers

I think this sums up the whole tone and feel of the novella. If you don’t know what budgie smugglers are… Google it.

Teaser Tuesday

I swear these weeks are going faster than they used to. I almost forgot to write this post… almost. It was probably at the back of my mind just like my writing has been, to be honest. I’m embracing the fact that this book will come together in my own, sweet time. Adulting and being a mummy comes first.

So, without further ado, here’s a teaser from the little I did manage to write.

Tomorrow is the second week of my book promotion posts. Check in to find out a little more about my fantasy book, Thrown to The Blue.

This series will always hold a special place in my heart as it is my first completed series. I love my characters, and ending book 3 felt like I was saying goodbye to good friends.

Praise for EVO Nation:

K.J.Chapman has done what I was afraid to attempt, and the results were pretty spectacular.’ – Goodreads review.

The themes explored add a depth to this story while the narrative grips from start to finish unapologetically.’ – Goodreads review.

I absolutely love this book!!! I could not put it down and read it in two sittings. – Amazon review.

An amazingly written novel that drew me in with both an incredible writing style and captivating story line.’ – Amazon review.

Teaser Tuesday

I have been plodding along with my writing this past week, and have now decided to shift a few chapters around and incorporate some info a little sooner in the narrative. When it comes to these changes, I start to procrastinate as I know I need to sit for a good few hours and sort it. It’s not editing, but putting the narrative in order before I can continue drafting. Once the chapters are in order, my mind is free to run with the story again.

Anyway, you are here for a teaser, right? This one gives a little insight into a sub character.
