Monthly Writing Prompt: February

I promised you a writing prompt every month, and a writing prompt you shall have. I have three, self published writing prompt books in my catalogue, so each month I will share a prompt from one of them to expand.

This month is a prompt from my book, Creative Writing Prompts for Kids.

February’s Prompt:

The librarian told me that the books talk when they think no one is listening.

Mrs Crabbe is known for being a little eccentric. She wears bottle-top earrings, carries her lunch in an empty biscuit tin, and may be well over one hundred years old. My gran swears she was the school librarian when she was at the school, but then again, Gran gets confused sometimes.

As usual, I’m the last child to be collected from homework club because Mum can never get her car to start on the first try, and she has to wrangle my brother into his car seat. Mrs Crabbe always let’s me into her office to sit by the heater as she potters about.

I hear voices outside the office, so I sling my rucksack over my shoulder and head into the library to find Mum. Mum isn’t here… I peer down the rows of book laden shelves… nothing.

“PSST!”

I swivel on my heel at the sound. “Mrs Crabbe?”

A giggle at the end of the aisle draws my attention. “Max, stop playing around!” I call out, running down the row to catch the prankster. My brother is at that annoying toddler age and thinks hide and seek is the best game ever invented. “Max, are you in here? Where is Mum?”

“PSST!” comes a voice from right beside me.  Just rows of musty, old books for as far as the eye can see. “My goodness, you can’t see further than the end of your nose. Over here, boy.”

I follow the voice to the tatty, battered leather-bound book tucked in the very corner of the shelf.

“I’m going mad,” I mutter, rubbing at my temples.

The book flies off the shelf at my words, hitting me in the stomach with force and sending me sprawling backward. “Mad? No. On the adventure of your life? You bet!”

I hope you enjoyed my five minute extension of the writing prompt. Come back on the 14th of every month for more.

January Update 2023

January has been and gone in the blink of an eye. I feel like I have had a productive month, especially in regards to book 2 of my Indigo Flames series.

Book 1, Thrown to The Blue, was published in 2016, so it’s about time I got on with book 2, right?

Writing

I now have 22k words written for book 2 of the Indigo Flames series. The title is set in stone, but I will not be revealing it quite yet.

Because it has been so long between books, I had to reacquaint myself with book 1. A hefty part of January was reading and taking notes.

Teaser of the month:

Blogging

I started my new writing prompt series this month. I plan to use a prompt from one of my published writing prompt books each month and create a paragraph or two from the chosen prompt.

Catch up here: January’s Writing Prompt

Reading

Like I said, I re-read Thrown to The Blue, but that was research, so it doesn’t really count.

I did manage another shorter read this month, What in God’s Name by Simon Rich.

What’s Next?

There will be a lot more updates on my current WIP. I plan to share some teasers to Instagram, and I am working on new covers for the series.

What in God’s Name by Simon Rich

What in God’s Name by Simon RichReview:

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. Heaven is reimagined as a company. Angels work various departments, get promoted, or demoted, just as those on Earth. There were a few laugh out loud moments… I love Raoul.

The big man, God, is getting bored, so he has decided to destroy Earth and focus on setting up an Asian Fusion restaurant.

Craig and Eliza are two angels in the Miracles Department who actually quite like their jobs. They make a wager with God that if they can make the 2 most anti-social humans fall in love, God will not destroy Earth.

Monthly Writing Prompt: January

I promised you a writing prompt every month, and a writing prompt you shall have. I have three, self published writing prompt books in my catalogue, so each month I will share a prompt from one of them to expand.

This month is a prompt from my first writing prompt book, Prompt Me.

January’s Prompt:

I was the first child born with the symbols on my skin, but I was far from the last.

Some say it was because of the mysterious lights in the sky on New Year’s Eve 2031. Some say the government put chemicals in the vaccines given to pregnant mothers. Some say we were purely sent from God.

I say that I would do anything to not be part of the one hundred. Being the first, my face is well known. My everry move scrutinised and documented since birth. I couldn’t even tell you what number 100 looks like. Figure me that!

I hope you enjoyed my five minute extension of the writing prompt. Come back on the 14th of every month for more.

2024 Plans

Happy New Year 2024! I love this time for planning ahead and feeling motivated. I want to share with you all my 2024 plans!

But first, let’s have a little recap of 2023. I smashed my reading challenge this year, and found my love of reading again.

On the blogging front, I have been consistent *GO ME. Consistency is a huge deal for me on this blog as in previous years, I struggled to keep to a routine.

And on the writing front, I published a writing prompts book, Seasonal Writing Prompts, but never managed to finish my fiction WIP.

Here are my plans for 2024:

Monthly book reviewMonthly writing prompt post from my writing prompt booksMonthly writing updatePublication of my WIPRegular free book promos

May 2024 be amazing for you all!

December Update 2023

The final update of the year is upon us. I know, scary right?

I always knew December would shoot by, and that I’d not get a huge amount of anything done, but here I am to tell you exactly what I haven’t got done *sigh*…

Writing

I wrote a little less than 10k words in the whole month. I know, abysmal. Hey, I’m here to share my writing journey, warts and all. I’m a mum, and we all know how stressful December is for mums.

Teaser of the month:

Blogging

There wasn’t a post on the 14th as promised. I had planned to do a bookish gift idea post, but it didn’t come to fruition. I’m saving the idea for Valentines Day ideas.

I did, however, set Thrown to The Blue as my last free promo of the year. I’m not sure how 2024 promos will look, so watch this space.

Reading

I read Rebecca Raisin’s Christmas trilogy of short stories this month. You can check out my triple review here:

Christmas at the Gingerbread Cafe

What’s Next?

I have a 2024 goals post coming next, so that’s where I will start in January!

Christmas Romance Short Stories: Triple Book Review

A triple book review of Rebecca Raisin’s A Gingerbread Cafe Christmas series

Christmas at the Gingerbread CafeReview:

You can’t feel more Christmassy than a romance set in a gingerbread cafe, right?

Lil is the owner of the Gingerbread Cafe. Divorced, yet still pining for her deadbeat ex husband, she is thrown a huge curveball when a handsome stranger opens a shop right across from hers and starts stealing her custom…

This has an enemies to lovers feel, but is sugar coated in a perfectly Christmassy way.

Chocolate Dreams at the Gingerbread CafeReview:

Lil and Damon are in the throws of their romance. At this point, Lil is even a huge part of his young daughter’s life. Everything is going great, and the cafe is set for the anticipated Easter Chocolate Festival, but Lil’s ex Joel squirms out of the woodwork and threatens to ruin everything.

Always a happy ending with Rebecca Raisin, so a perfect, feel good short story.

Christmas Wedding at the Gingerbread CafeReview:

Nothing beats a Christmas wedding.

Lil and Damon are getting married a year to the day they started dating. Both sets of in laws are in town causing issues, and Damon’s mother is hell bent on putting strain on their relationship.

There’s a healthy dose of reality with some hard hitting topics, but this only shows how the community rallies for their own, and how there can be beauty in life and death.
