Feral Writer | Book Fiend | Southerner | Veteran | Pilot | Mad Scientist | All Around Stubborn Person

I write Contemporary Realistic Literature Flash Fiction and Short Stories. The angst and issues of living in a less-than-perfect world predominate throughout my works.

A Southerner by virtue of ancestry, birth, and choice, I've also lived in Europe, and for a short time on the Big Island of Hawaii. I currently make my home in the South, not far from the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, and the beaches of South Carolina.

An avid reader, I prefer the works of Leslie Pietrzyk, Hillary Jordan, Pinckney Benedict, Chanelle Benz, Tim McLaurin, A.M.Homes, Richard Russo, Donald Hall, Raymond Carver, Lauren Groff, Gretel Ehrlich, Daniel Woodrell.

There's no way to learn the vernacular, the language of writing, if you don't do both. And find an author whose work you both like and respect, read their works extensively, learn to emulate their style (how they write) so you will eventually find your own as well as your own voice when putting pen to paper. And don't confuse emulation with plagiarism, but know the difference between context and content. Don't ever lift the contents of another writer's work and copy it as your own. That's cheating and trouble you just don't want to have to explain or deal with legally. Be genuine, be yourself, be true to your readers.(less)
R.E. Vaughn At the moment, nothing other than editing a few select stories written by friends who have come to love writing as much as I do.

Dr. Seuss
“You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.”
Dr. Seuss

Ralph Waldo Emerson
“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Daniel Woodrell
“Never. Never ask for what ought to be offered.”
Daniel Woodrell, Winter's Bone

“I think about how truly interesting and odd it is that when a woman marries, traditionally she loses her name, becoming absorbed by the husband's family name - she is in effect lost, evaporated from all records under her maiden name. I finally understand the anger behind feminism - the idea that as a woman you are property to be conveyed between your father and your husband, but never an individual who exists independently. And on the flip side, it is also one of the few ways one can legitimately get lost - no one questions it.”
A.M. Homes, The Mistress's Daughter

Gretel Ehrlich
“Autumn teaches us that fruition is also death; that ripeness is a form of decay. The willows, having stood for so long near water, begin to rust. Leaves are verbs that conjugate the seasons.”
Gretel Ehrlich, The Solace of Open Spaces
