Is It Ever "The Right Time?"

When I did the "Go Renegade Or Go Broke Telesummit " with my good friend and mentor, it just wasn't the right time.

I was literally in the middle of a move.  I took on some new clients.  My girlfriend was in the middle of moving up here.  And we were still trying to figure out exactly where we wanted to move (not to mention the fact that I didn't know the first thing about doing a "Telesummit," didn't know how much time it would take and)…

We still set the date and did it anyway.

A few months ago I decided to work with a mastermind group that's a year long program and a few thousand dollars to be a part of.  The funny thing was, it wasn't the right time either. It was when I needed the extra cash to put a deposit on the new place. To use as an extra cushion "just incase things didn't work out" as I continue to build AND live a 100% debt free business and life and…

We did it anyway.

When I heard about all the crazy shit of starting a business "in the worst time" (let alone starting it without any big income or debt)… I also felt like "it's wasn't the right time."

We did it anyway.

Should we get the chance to talk over the phone and possibly work on a copywriting project together, can I just say that if you're "waiting for the right time…"

Do it anyway.

And please understand that this isn't some kind of subliminal hint if we already talked live.  Because it's not. I'm just feeling as if for some strange reason, someone out there needed to hear that again.

Because it really is true.

QUESTION: Do you love your business, but know you shouldn't be the one writing for it?  Or perhaps you may even feel you could ruin the reputation you've spent so long in building?  Heck… maybe it just takes you way too long to get the necessary thoughts out.  And once you do, it doesn't do much to increase your sales.

If any of that sounds familiar, click here .  Let's talk!

5 Simple Ways To Have Your Words Working Harder Than You

1 – Ask questions.

Engaging is good.

2 – Dig deeper.

Remember that most people don't want a BMW.  They want the FEELING they get from owning one.  What is that feeling your customer's really want?

3 – Do the necessary research – I'd also appreciate the help here too.

4 – Before you write on a specific topic ask, "What fires you up and pisses you off about it?"

Then just let it all out (edit the scary parts later).

5 - Hit on an emotion.

Remember, what I shared before…

"We buy on emotion THEN justify it with logic."

A Few Simple Tips In Writing Copy For Your Biz

There are a ton.  But here's a few to start:

1 – Write like you speak.

We want to connect with the person behind the business (just as much as the product/service we buy).

2 – Avoid at all costs putting your bio on the home page.

I still cannot believe how frequently I see this (even for somewhat established businesses that have been around for a number of years).

Remember, you have a business that should serve people at some level.  And people need to know about your service and what you can do for THEM first (before we tell them about how great we are).

3 – Never tell people how great you are.

Have others do that – through a testimonials page.

Short And Sweet

I was watching "Fringe" the other night with my girlfriend on my laptop and…

I know.  I know.  You're probably thinking, "How romantic."  LOL!  Ok.  So we're not going to go there.

However, during the break I saw this car commercial that floored me – and thought it would be important to share with other businesses.  But not just another commercial, one that illustrates how effective "short and sweet" can be?"

I'd also be curious to see who else saw this commercial – and what you thought of it.

So listen…

Do you remember those old school 100 foot tall air filled streamers they sometimes stick in car lots (for the life of me I can't think of what it's called – but I'm sure someone has a name for it).  Anyways, the commercial starts off where you feel as if you're riding in the car and suddenly become overtaken by an immensely oversized inflatable fabric dummy towering over you when suddenly…

A voice comes on to ask us, "Are car makers still trying to get your attention or are they just trying to distract you?"

Then it flashes a date… and shows their web site compactconspiracy.com.  Now I know it's not exactly how it happened, but here's what I love about being short and sweet with your copy:

It can still cause people to take action (as I did).
It can still tell the truth.
It can still make fun of the competition (and get it's point across).
It can still intrigue you enough to want to know more.

Can Others Really Steal Our Business?

It's scary when you think about it.  But people are stealing business from you every single day you sit there and do nothing about it.  Here's why.

There's probably a few hundred people to a few hundred THOUSAND people that do what you do. And the thing is… you sit around thinking you're going to do something to change it and the weeks turn to months. The months turn to years.  And your still working as hard if not HARDER than when you first started your business and to say the least…

You're exhausted.  Frustrated.  And just at a loss as to why that is.

For example; I had this one lady pay an individual that calls themselves a copywriter, and she's pretty much embarrassed to tell anyone about her site now (because they really weren't one).  The thing is, it's almost weeks later and you hear the same ridiculous excuse I've heard before:

I work off of referrals.

Well here's the deal. Do you know why you ONLY work off of referrals?

Because you're trying to go to Pic-N-Save finding the best deal out there and now that you got the best deal in town from someone who doesn't do the level of work you and I do NO ONE IN THEIR RITE MIND WILL USE YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE BECAUSE YOUR WEB SITE LOOKS AND READS LIKE CRAP so…

Your competition wins every time!

They win because they're willing to do something about the screw ups they made today. They win because if they don't, they lose business every single day they don't spend the money for quality work that has people go to their site and reads in a way that get's others excited about working with them.

So do yourself a favor… get your shit in gear!  Stop letting people steal business from you!  And if you ONLY work off of referrals and generate no new business because of how your web site reads… what happens when your referrals run out?

By the time that happens, it's too late!  And not only has someone else stolen your business, you've stolen from yourself the ability to live up to your potential.  And are you REALLY ok with that?

Tired Of The B.S.?

Frustration.  Overwhelm.  Chaos.

It's what happens when you decide to start a business and make money doing something you love. It's that bi-polar roller coaster that comes with being an entrepreneur. However, it's all part of leaving the "day job" behind to try and make a difference.

Because starting something that's your own isn't easy. In fact it's really friggin hard.

And that means on most days you feel like you're getting your butt handed to you on a silver platter.

OK, maybe that's not the best way to say it.

What we really mean is that most of the time you feel like you're getting your ass-kicked.

I'm writing to you to tell you that it's time to abolish all of the BS you've been taught!

It's time to say goodbye to all the rules of playing it safe and being nice and waiting on that REALLY long line until you get a chance to speak.

Why Do They Choose Me?

That's probably one of the most important questions you need to ask yourself and find out about… not tomorrow.  NOW!

Simply ask yourself, "Why do my customers choose me" – versus EVERYONE else that does what I do?

For me, it's that they need to inject new blood into their flat content.  To simplify their lengthy archaic brand, into something new, refreshing and a TON more engaging!  I provide them with a new perspective (versus the same ole hum drum "other guy").  A new way to connect with their audience.  An "outside the box" view of what it takes to get their customers to take action.  To stand out from the noise… and kick some MAJOR ass!

But hey… that's me.  What about YOU?

I'm also 100% honest with new prospective clients from day one.  100% transparent.  So what does that REALLY mean to you?

I can show every aspect of my work with each individual client.  I can show them every hour I've spent on giving them the best copywritten material out there.  I can tell them flat out what it takes (from day one).  How much work goes into the details.  And what the best way is to simplify THEN amplify their crazy ideas, transforming them into creatively compelling words that sell…  sell… sell!

Because much like your customers… they're tired of the same false promises.  Tired of hiring same conventional guy that just "writes copy."  Who looks for a paycheck then moves on – without spending the necessary time to find out about the companies brand.  It's customers.  And how their product is the single most important answer to their customer's problem their constantly dealing with!  Cause let's be honest…

Anything less than this just adds to the noise!  It hurts sales.

So understand a deeper level of your customer's emotional buttons.  A deeper reason of what get's people to buy what your company sells – to get people to fall in love with you and your product all over again.

That's just a tiny little snippet of what I love doing – and why my client's choose me.  So now, I'm curious… why do they choose you?  You NEED to know!

When Good Isn't Good Enough

I meet a lot of people who have "good" web sites.  You know these people because they provide "good" services for "good" people.

The only thing is "good" sucks!

It's true.

Now I know someone might of been offended by that, but that's only a problem if you feel you're "good."

Know how I know this?  Because "good" didn't work for me either – but there's still a ton of it around!

The reason being is because more people are getting let go from their place of employment – and because of that disappointment, they go and start their own business. However, just because you have a "great idea" doesn't mean you'll make "good" money doing it.  I certainly know how that goes – because there's a lot more to it than, "I have a great idea.  I should start my own business because working a 'regular job' sucks!"

When talking to new clients I take on, the one of many thing I try to work with them on first is their USP (unique selling proposition). It's all about what makes YOU different than all the other people out there doing what you do.  What is it about YOU that no one can copy?  No one can duplicate.  No one has the ability to do that you can.

For me, it's my fucked up unique background in working over 30 different companies to fund my own businesses (in just about every industry).  What separates me too, is that I can take complex ideas, and sift it down to a few great words that get people's attention.  Get them to act.  Hit emotional buttons, then create a rapport with people that says, "I love this person. I want to do business with them."  And the people that I don't get that reaction from… I don't work with.

I also have a background in behavioral psychology, creative writing and music – launching my very own products for over 15 years (creating sales pages, web sites, product launches, flyers, promotional materials, cd launches, book launches, etc)…

I mean how much more screwed up unique does that get?  LOL!  But seriously…

Go ahead and Google any "Copywriter" out there (as I did a while back) and see for yourself.  As far as I'm concerned (and you can do a split screen) – it doesn't compare.  I know.  As I began studying some of the best in my field, I did a lot of this research myself (which you should do too).  Then just ask yourself, "What's different about me?  Why would anyone want to do business with me over all the other people that do what I do out there?"

That's why I turned away more people my first month in business, than people I actually took on.  So listen…

This isn't about bragging.  It's to tell you that you need to find out what's your USP.  What's unique about you?  Why should we choose you over the hundreds, maybe even thousands of others out there that do what you do?  Who's going to help you find this out and actually turn it into words that talk to your customers?  Get them to want to do business with you?  Engage them in a way that no one else can?

Then ask yourself more questions.  Go deeper.  More in depth and start finding out…

How do you communicate to your core group of customers?  Does it help you stand out from the noise or just add to it?  Is it in alignment with your vision?  Your brand.  How can you communicate this in a way that isn't boring?  Is "you."  Is something that connects emotionally with people?

Know why I ask that too?  Again, because "good" just isn't good enough anymore!  Prove me wrong… but I'll tell you this… the amount of hours you'll spend doing what I do AND ABSOLUTELY LOVE DOING, isn't worth losing anymore money over.  Why do I say that?

Because "good" will put you out of business.  Being "KICK ASS" will help you build it!

Run In The Rain

I first noticed this when I arrived in Seattle this July.  Catapulted here, and turning a round trip airline ticket to a one way… all it took was an out of hand argument and someone trying to sell me on who they wanted me to be (unlike who I REALLY am).

Within hours, I found myself in hotel room near the airport and a few days later, I did the only thing I knew how to do…

Run in the rain.

So I took out my laptop and started figuring things out.

What was the one thing people loved that I did?  What was the one thing I could sell and help them with?  What kinds of people do I love working with?  What types of books do I need to read to help me out?  How can I get my own mentor to help me move forward – and help me with what he once did (teaching me what I felt I needed to do)… learn.

So I started to run again – clear in my goals and where I was going.  Then it stopped raining.  Instead… it poured!

Launching my new site in a few weeks, I immediately took on Copywriting clients.  I loved doing it.  And the people I knew that hired me, benefitted the most too… because they couldn't do what I could help them get done (in the unique way that I could do it)

So I got used to the rain, but I felt alone.

So I ran further.  Longer.  Harder…

And started meeting a handful of others with that same willingness to run (despite the rain).

Joining a partnership with my great friend and mentor Matthew G. (a professional Copywriter for some of the biggest NYC ad agencies who went on his own to help others like you)… having Kelly agree to help run the business debt free with me full time come this February (adding speaking, live events, workshops, tele-seminars and anything else to help you LIVE you in your business and personal life by communicating who you are in what you do) and…

I just want to say, start running in the rain!

Hire a professional that can do what you need done – better than you can do it.  Take a chance on saying what you want to say – in the way that you want to say it (to the people you want to say it to).  Read a book you've never heard of.  Listen to inspirational music you wouldn't normally listen to.  Take a chance.  Start a school to abolish "Corporate Slavery" or the "Starving Artistry" that's running amuck…

And most importantly, make a decision… to run in the rain.  Feel it on your skin.  Wipe it off your brow.  And kick some fucking ass!

Special NoteTired of the same boring and conventional business crappery? Upon signup you'll get a free music download to help you kick ass… a cool free eBook entitled, "Your Uncommon Guide To Finding The Ultimate Mentor" to help you kick ass… and hmm… what else?
