I’ve followed Reagan from her transformation to a werewolf, through her doubting she could really help her pack, to the final story of this series, Chasing Eternity. She really shines in this installment finding her confidence and faith in her inner voice. Tia weaves elements from many supernatural beings into her story in an artful way while telling the story of Reagan’s tribe. I’m sad to see this series come to a completion but the book does not disappoint.

1st Path to Happiness - Words from @DrElia

As you know I like to partner with people who affirm positive energy. Last summer I met Elia Gourgouris, Ph. D. and he introduced me to his #1 Best-Selling Self-Help book 7 Paths to Lasting Happiness. Reading his book, there were several ideas that stuck with me. The 1st Path is loving yourself. I think we’ve all heard the slogan “you have to love yourself before you can love others”. Reflecting on this premise, I realized we can’t be happy unless we are happy with ourselves. Even if all the outside things are good, we have a good job, nice house, loving partner, we may still be lacking in happiness if the component of self-love is missing.
 
So how do we create self-love? Dr. Elia writes we need to recognize our self-worth. Roadblocks to truly loving ourselves can include:

·         comparison to others
·         life out of balance (physical, emotional, spiritual)
·         failure to take action towards a valued goal
·         making S.M.A.R.T. goals
·         being accountable
·        dealing with our Inner Critic
·         thinking we need to be perfect
·         inability to embrace out true selves
 
If we can recognize challenges and work towards embracing our self-worth then we have a crucial piece towards lasting happiness. I wish this for all of you.

Wiping Away Our Inner Graffiti

​How our internal context can shape our lives
​I recently found a book by Vlad Zachary titled The Excellence Habit. I was intrigued because it reminded me of my blog posts Driven to Succeed, Resolutions vs. Goals, and Being Are You Who You Are? (links below if you’d like to check them out again). Thumbing through the pages, a passage caught my attention. The section described how our inner context or environment can shape our lives.
 
It is easy to see how our external environment or context plays a major factor in affecting our state of mind. The coffee is empty, the car is out of gas, a truck coats you in muddy water, and you decide you are having a bad day. Changing this negative mental state takes some energy. However, we can consciously decide that even in bad circumstances we can have a positive outlook and feel happy rather than wallow in self-pity.
 
Much like our external environment shapes our outlook, our internal environment or context can shape our feelings and reactions. Some of our inner context comes from memories. A song may trigger a negative reaction because it was a favorite of a former friend. The scent of apple pie can remind us of meals with our family and we feel happy. On a deeper level, our thoughts, beliefs, and values make up our core inner context and shape how we perceive and react to the world.
 
Changing a core inner context that may hinder success in relationships or careers can be harder than just deciding to have a good day. I’ll give you an example of how I experienced changing a core inner context. I am told that as a young child I was very quiet and shy. Family members chose to reiterate this point to me often and I came to believe I was a shy person. Those who know me will tell you I am not the most outgoing one of a bunch. I won’t claim to be an extrovert, but I enjoy being with friends and can be quite animated when I am passionate about something.
 
Having the inner context of being a shy person kept me from socializing with peers and conversing with teachers in many instances. It wasn’t until college that I began to shed the cloak of shyness and embrace the outgoing side of my personality. It took a long time to fully change how I thought of myself and have courage to engage people like professors who could help me shape my future.
 
Thinking about my reactions to life I see several other patterns of beliefs that have hindered my, I won’t say success, I will say excellence. The challenge from Vlad Zachary is to identify the wrong statements written on your psyche, the inner graffiti, if you will, and change how you interact with the world.

Born in the heart of the Balkans, Vlad Zachary was ushered into a world of forbidden hippy music, communism, and a clear division between East and West. He grew up ignoring authority and conformism, whenever safe.
 
Vlad's formal education took place in Sofia, Bulgaria - a city proud to be both ancient and young. During his college years, he built a name as a reliable journalist with pro-democracy preferences. As student, Vlad also made his way onto the national TV scene, where he anchored a leading, live news show.
 
With this solid combo of knowledge+experience under his belt, Vlad decided that journalism was not all there was to life. So he took a job as a telecoms manager in Botswana, Africa and learned first-hand about business, local culture, and the tricks to cleaning catfish. Next, he came to America, earned a Babson MBA, brought his son to live and grow with him, and had a daughter. He founded Pingwyn, a location-based mobile platform, and produced the Mastering The Job Interview DVD.
