Happy 2017!

Happy New Year! I was so excited to find this planner with birds to organize my year. Thinking about 2017, I looked back at my goals for 2016.  I have to say, I feel good about the year. I finished the Being Me series and added two novellas to my collection. If you remember my chalkboard list from January 2016, I’d listed finishing the series, attending two conferences, and trying something new. I had a blast at Utopia Con and Penned Con and met so many new people, they were both great experiences! The something new ended up being my first paranormal read, Drops of Sunshine, and most recently my first dystopian story Lovelock Ones: Native One. These challenged me to write in two new genres, in a different age group, and from a male character’s perspective.

In 2015 when I decided to publish my first book, Is This Me?, I knew I wanted it to tell a story of a girl who thinks she’s figured it all out but experiences challenges that leave her questioning her path. It was a hard series to write because I wanted it to be authentic. I needed for Amanda to face situations that pushed her to the limits and for her to find a way to meet her trials head on. I loved the characters in this series and am sad to be putting many of them on hold for now. Zack’s story is one that I aim to get to you in 2017! Renee Scattergood's Shadow Stalker Part 3

Things go from bad to worse when the Galvadi Empire develops a new technology to use against the shadow stalkers. Now Kado and Makari are more determined than ever to keep Auren away from their enemies, but Auren decides enough is enough and takes matters into her own hands. She turns herself over to the Galvadi to get close to Drevin and Makari has no choice but to play along. He is forced to either torture Auren to prove his loyalty or die knowing she will be tortured and enslaved anyway. Somehow, they must get close enough to Drevin to bring him down and put an end to the Galvadi’s tyranny once and for all.
 
Episode 13: Defiance
 
Three years have passed since Auren and Shai escaped the daily torture of the Galvadi. With Makari's help, they have learned more about the Galvadi's technology and discovered ways to overcome its effects on their power, which gave them an edge in the war. However, the Galvadi have spent that time developing new technology that could mean the end of the shadow stalkers.
 
Episode 14: Falling to Pieces
 
Things go from bad to worse after Cali is captured by the Galvadi. The new technology they have employed is making a rescue attempt impossible and endangering the lives of all the shadow stalkers. Auren refuses to give up though, but the more she tries to fix thing, the more Kado tightens the leash.
 
Episode 15: Into My Own
 
Just when Auren thinks she’d had enough of Kado’s overbearing and overprotective nature, he surprises her by apologizing and admitting he had been wrong. Auren finally accepts that she is not at fault for Cali’s death after visiting her in the shadow world, but Kado and Makari are still preventing her from confronting Drevin. They don’t feel she is ready, and Auren is beginning to believe they will never let her fulfil her destiny. It’s time she takes matters into her own hands.
 
Episode 16: A New Emperor
 
Makari is told the only way he can prove his loyalty is by torturing Auren, but he refuses to go through it. So Jharak, Drevin’s master interrogator, took the liberty to be the one to break her, but in the end, it would take forcing her to watch him torture and kill Makari.
 
Episode 17: Allies to Enemies Part 1
 
Traitors are weeded out and new allies are found. Auren and Makari are determined to bring peace once again to the Serpent Isles, but they have a deadline. If they don’t make it in time, they could end up at war with their own people.
 
Episode 18: Allies to Enemies Part 2
 
General Graves wants Auren and Makari dead. When Makari demands one of Graves’ men, who secretly supports Makari, is sent to him for extra security at the palace, Graves uses a mind control drug to get him to assassinate them. Will Auren and Makari learn what happened before it’s too late?

Now for what you really want to know! This anthology started out with the idea of benefitting a global charity. Once the benefitting group, Doctors Without Borders, had been chosen, we set on creating a theme. Many ideas were tossed out but in the end we decided that a healing theme seemed to appeal to us most. My previous work came from a well-thought out idea, so as with my first anthology, having to write to a specific direction challenged me.

Since I'd been working on a heavier themed read I wanted something lighter. Plus, all my friends kept saying... are you going to write something your boys like? Well, as they're twelve, I'm not sure I achieved that yet... I did read the first two chapters to one of them... I think it was a bit too teenagery still... but, what I have created is a saga of sorts about a girl named Jema and a boy named Troy who are near the brink of adulthood but get sent to remote desert community when a flu epidimic threatens. And thus the Lovelock series was born. I hope you'll enjoy reading it as much as I'm enjoying creating the story!

I've organized this post a little different from others. Since this is an eight author anthology each of the stories has a different feel. The first in the book, my novella, Native One, is a young adult dystopian tale, while the rest of the stories are clean new adult historical fiction, paranormal, contemporary, or romantic tales. They are presented in the order they appear in the book.

Tish Thawer shares her thoughts on NaNo: Surprise!!!

Today I'm highlighting Tish Thawer! Tish and I met at the Nashville airport waiting on a shuttle to our Utopia 2016 convention hotel! Tish is a wonderful warm person and amazing writer! Here is what she has to say about NaNo!

I was so surprised when Tricia asked me to write a little something about my Nano experience, and that led me straight to my truth. I surprise myself every year. Not because I blast through Nano, claiming those 50,000 words in a record amount of time, no, but because every year, Nano is nothing more than a whim that I haven’t thought about for the last 335 days. When November 30th hits, Nano is a magical, glitter-filled bubble that pops and disintegrates, or at least it is for me. Then, the following November 1st rolls around and it’s like your sweet, old neighbor who jumps out and yells surprise at your birthday party, reminding you that she’ll always be there for the important things. I’ve been a Nano member for six years, and every single novel I’ve worked on has become one of my published works (not counting the manuscript currently being shopped to New York by my agents...fingers crossed my streak will stand.) Every year, I’m surprised by how motivated I become because of Nano, by how those little badges offer such fun incentives, and by how keeping up-to-date on my word count and sharing it with friends is just the thing I need to get excited about writing again after a year of edits, rewrites, and marketing for my previous releases.

Winning or losing, Nano plays an important role in my publishing schedule every year. From my second published novel, Blood of a Red Rose, to my recent release, Dark Abigail, I’ve used Nano to hit a goal that may have otherwise been slid to the backburner for another couple of months––especially during the holiday season. This year I’m working on my highly anticipated sequel,The Daughters of Maine (book #2 in the Witches of BlackBrook trilogy), and I’m now so engrossed in the magic and mood of this story, I can’t wait to finish it, reveal the cover, and share it with you all. And that is magic of Nano.

I’m not the type of person who likes surprises, but Nano is one that I’ll happily welcome again and again. (Insert the oxymoron = a repeatable surprise.)

NaNoWriMo Guest: SF Benson

Hi, I’m author SF Benson! Thanks, Tricia for inviting me to guest post on your blog today.
I just completed by third National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) project. I hit 50,000 plus midway through the month. This year’s NaNoWriMo went a lot smoother than last year’s and definitely better than the first year.
What changed? My plan of attack. In 2014, I attempted to plan. I spent a couple of months trying to figure out how to write a first draft combined with how to plan my story. I spent so much time planning I nearly didn’t start on November 1st. Last year, I planned but it wasn’t well thought out. I loved my story premise and went with it. Needless to say, the story is sitting on the shelf waiting to be completely rewritten. I figured I must really be a pantser and gave up the notion of planning.
This year, I decided that I’d write the rough draft for the fourth book in my Dystopian series. I knew what I wanted to write about (my story premise), developed a real outline for the plot, and gave myself real daily targets (two writing sessions per day of a minimal 1667 words). I must say, I was so excited to write Asher Jones’ story that I had no problem getting the words done.
Restore: the Alliance Chronicles, Book 4 is scheduled for a September 2017 release.
