It's been two years since Is This Me? released and I'm so excited to spotlight this fun romance for you! I fall in love with these characters  each time I read this book again.

So, full confession time... thinking about my most recent review of IF I COULD FLY...

"I liked If I Could Fly better than the first book in the Being Me series, Is This Me? because I could relate to Amanda's situation. I remembered back to the event that inspired the book, the week I almost, yes almost, took the escape hatch. I was in love with an older guy who'd just graduated and moved across the country. The first week I cried and the second, I plotted my getaway . At nineteen, with a decent sized bank account, I could've followed him. But I didn't.

How would my life be different, I've often wondered. At nineteen, a short vacation from college shouldn't have affected my life that much, right? But I'd never been a risk taker, and I'm still not.

In Drops of Sunshine, I repeated this theme without realizing it. Reading Drops of Sunshine's most recent review, made it all too clear.

"Drops of Sunshine by Tricia Copeland: I appreciate the subject matter this author chose to write about for this story. I haven’t read a lot of stories featuring disabled children and I thought it was smart the way the author wove in the mind-reading with the children as well as Nina learning how to let people in (“Needing others didn’t make me weak”)." -Amazon reviewer

Verseborn - A 5* read!

Earlier this month I brought you all the details for PM Hernandez’s new release, Verseborn! I had just finished the first in the series, Earthborn, and was beyond excited to read the sequel!

Verseborn (short for Universe born...get it?) did not disappoint! I think I may have like it even more than the first book! In Earthborn, Adelaide (Addy), age 17, makes a shocking discovery about her heritage and long lost father. Brock, a broody hunkish collector, intercepts Addy. There is instant friction and chemistry between the two. In Verseborn, Addy must find a way to save her father from a death sentence. Brock follows Addy and complications ensue. This is definitely a 5* read!

CALM and FOCUS: Aromatherapy 101
 
In Kingdom of Embers, the main character, Alena, uses essential oils to help her calm down, as well as re-energize and focus. I brought this element into the story because Alena must deal with her vampire quirks, aggression and day-time lethargy, using natural products. Her mentor, Orm, creates these aromatherapy mixtures for her.
 
Here today to talk about aromatherapy is my friend and certified Aromatherapist, Christy Hires! Welcome, Christy!

Q: What is aromatherapy?
A: Aromatherapy literally means “healing through sweet odor.” Due to social media and network marketing aromatherapy and the use of essential oils continues to increase in popularity. The words aromatherapy and essential oils are often used interchangeably, although use of essential oils does not mean aromatherapy is being practiced. To use aromatherapy as true therapy, we need to know a little more about essential oils than just their aroma.
 
Q: What are essential oils?
A: A more accurate name for essential oils is volatile oils. These volatile oils come from plants and are lightweight molecules that contribute to its scent. Depending on the plant, these oils can be found in the root, stem, leaf or flower. Volatile oils are extracted from plant matter through steam or, in the case of citrus fruit, through pressing the peel. They are not essential for the plant’s survival. They merely help a plant thrive. What a great way to describe how we can use volatile oils in human bodies!
 
Q: Is there scientific evidence that these oils work?
A: Modern science and current research indicate that volatile oils can tangibly affect our minds and bodies. Most essential oil use relies on anecdotal evidence (such as “I’m not sure why, it just works,” “It healed my friend’s daughter’s excema,” or “Grandma always used it on me and I loved it”). Clinical aromatherapy points to research to explain how our bodies benefit from oils beyond the happy smell. Scientific studies on volatile oils help quantify the safety, the efficacy, and the most effective use of these powerful tools. As a professional aromatherapist, I show scientific evidence to validate that grandma’s advice is more than a wives’ tale.
 
Q: How do I use essential oils? Are they safe?
A: The practice of aromatherapy can be via inhalation, skin application, safely diluted in an organic carrier oil (grape seed, avocado or jojoba oil), and/or ingestion of essential oils. Ingestion is recommended only while under a certified Aromatherapist’s supervision.
 
Q: How do the oils work?
A: Volatile oils contain molecules that when inhaled enter the bloodstream quickly. Each plant’s oil contains different concentrations of these natural chemicals to aid in healing our bodies from the inside out. For example, ginger’s essential oil is made up of molecules that aid in stomach digestion related to nausea or gas, as well as molecules that are anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. Combining ginger with energizing essential oils such as sweet orange and peppermint can increase productivity. Combining it with an essential oil that contain sedative properties, such as sandalwood and lemon, can bring a calming effect.
 
For the scents I mixed for Kingdom of Embers, essential oils of cedarwood, lemon, and lavender are included in CALM. This blend will help your body relax due to antispasmodic and sedative properties. For FOCUS, ginger, mandarin, and peppermint essential oils are included to improve circulation and alertness. Q: What advice can you give us about using essential oils?
A: If you are just beginning to explore Aromatherapy or you have been practicing for years, my advice is, be open. Be willing to explore and question. Volatile oils can be a powerful tool in your medicine cabinet. To keep you and your family safe, make sure the advice you are getting has evidence to support the claims.

Earthborn - a 4 star YA sci fi/fantasy read!
I'm not normally a sci fi reader but this book came highly recommended so I gave it a try. It is not a heavily techie book and I may have labeled it more of a fantasy than sci fi. I loved that PM gave you two points of view, the witty Adelaide, and brooding, Brock. The story line was fresh and entertaining. The only part that I didn't like was that it ended too soon. I can't wait to read the sequel.

Red-Haired Giants of Lovelock

In Lovelock Ones: Native One, teens, Jema and Troy, are sent to a cave community to escape a flu outbreak. In my search for a cavern which could serve as quarters for a group of people, Lovelock Cave rose to the top of my list. It is located just twenty miles south of modern day, Lovelock, which sits in the mid-western desert region of Nevada.

Lovelock Cave is thought to be one of the most important archeological sites in North America. Its history of human occupation spans 3500 years, dating to 1500 BC. Over ten thousand archeological specimens including tools, bones, baskets, mummies, fifteen inch sandals, and the oldest feathered duck decoys exist from the site.

The first people in Lovelock Cave are known as the Lovelock Culture. The Northern Paiutes are believed to have replaced the Lovelock Culture. According to Paiute legend, a group of red-headed giants terrorized the local tribes. These large people are known as the Saiduka (Si-Te-Cah). The tribes are said to have banded together, drove the giants into Lovelock Cave, and exterminated them by fire. Some archeological evidence for a group of tall red-headed people exists from digs in the early 1900s.

It is Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins, a Paiute writer and lecturer, pictured above with her father (a Paiute chief), who wrote down the legends in 1882 in a book titled Life Among the Paiutes: Their Wrongs and Claims.

An early idea for the title of Lovelock Ones was The New Paiute. As the cave became more important to Jema and Troy, I decided to adopt it as the title. You may have noted the emblem (below) I had designed to represent this book series. It includes Jema’s icon, arrows, Troy’s icon, jack rabbits, and the outline of Lovelock Cave’s entrance in the center.

If you haven’t read Lovelock Ones: Native One you can find it in The Butterfly Box, an anthology of eight healing themed novellas. Native One is a novella centered around Jema, who decides she must find a cure for her sister. It will be followed by Bred One in Jan. 2018, which tells Troy’s challenges in the cave community.
