Where'd You Go, Bernadette
[image error]
After a bit of a reading hiatus through the busy editing process for my upcoming release (Kingdom of War, the finale to the Kingdom Journals Series comes out Friday, June 21, 2019), I'm back on my reading kick and loving it! You're welcome to scroll down and see my most recent reads including those by Tia Silverthorne Bach, L.B. Carter, and Lisa See.
Today, I'm highlighting Maria Sempley's novel Where'd You Go, Bernadette. Bernadette drew me in right away. As an author, I loved the varied point-of-view of the story that switches between 3rd person where we get snippets of what is going on with Bernadette through her email correspondences with an offshore "assistant" and then later in the story through a neighbor, and 1st person from her daughter Bee's perspective. Bee's voice passages become longer and longer as the story progresses and in the end drives the plot.
More about the novel from the book description:
A misanthropic matriarch leaves her eccentric family in crisis when she mysteriously disappears in this whip-smart and "divinely funny" novel that inspired the movie starring Cate Blanchett (New York Times).
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect; and to 15-year-old Bee, she is her best friend and, simply, Mom.
Then Bernadette vanishes. It all began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle--and people in general--has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.
To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, and secret correspondence--creating a compulsively readable and surprisingly touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.
My review:
I liked this book and give it a solid 4/5 stars for several reasons: 1) the point-of-view adds an interesting twist on the book; 2) the plot moved along well; 3) I was intrigued the whole time to find out exactly what Bernadette was up to and why, i.e. the book held my attention well, moved at a good pace, and released information at a good trickle; and 4) I liked the characters even if they seemed a bit eccentric and self-centered initially.
The official review:
I loved the creative point-of-view/voice in this story. The switch between omniscient POV and the daughter's first person accounts gave you a great glimpse into each person's character. The daughter gave you a reason to care for Bernadette. There were other factors that helped you be invested in her character (I won't include spoilers), but I felt the daughter's love for her mother were the most important and sweetest link to Bernadette.

Silent Siren by L.B. Carter Synopsis & Review
[image error] I met L.B. Carter in April at the Roanoke Author Invasion and picked up her book for some fun YA paranormal/supernatural reading! Here's a bit more about the book...
From the back cover:
Being a freak in high school is easy if you're smart, doubly so when you’re found on a riverbank, mute, with green-tinted hair, a locket, and amnesia. Secretly, dread that she really is a freak silences Sirena. Her lips seal in a single memory:
Rena drowned her father, saying goodbye with a life-ending kiss.
Death in his parents’ organization forces Norton on his first mission to a podunk coastal town with his brother, where their colleague last made contact. To fulfill the client’s contract:
Nor must recover the specimen fabled to adapt life to climate change.
Thanks to homeschooling, Nor is unprepared for going undercover at a high school. The protective nature his training instilled goes awry when the damsel believes she’s not the one who needs saving. As the two dive into the murky depths of the past, they unearth someone—or someones—willing to kill to keep the truth silent. Can they discover their answers...
Before they go under?
I was intrigued by the plot line from the beginning and found Rena's character fascinating. The book is written from a third person omnipotent point-of-view, but I was never sure whether to trust her self assessment. Did she really drown her own father? No, right? The story line and plot twists kept me guessing as clues were uncovered. I'm not sure I could have guessed the ending as it is such a unique story. Kudos to Ms. Carter for creating a completely novel fable!
Here's my official review:
This YA paranormal read had me guessing till the end. The plot line is unique and characters even more so. I'd never read a book about a spectre and found Carter's twisty plot engaging. Could you insert yourself in a high school to find solve a mysterious death and find the key to saving the earth from environmental ruin? Okay, when you put it that way, Definitely! Both lead characters are ones you root for even if you're not quite sure whose version of their past to believe. This book sets the stage for so much more to come!
You can find Silent Siren, Book 1 of the Climatic Climacteric series and all her other YA and NA titles here.

Chasing Souls by Tia Silverthorne Bach Review
[image error] I'm a huge fan of Tia Silverthorne Bach's YA paranormal reads and I was excited to get my hands on this newest addition to the Tala Prophecy series. The main series, starting with Chasing Memories, follows Reagan a wolf-shifter as she learns about her specials gifts and comes to terms with a world that is much more complicated than she ever believed.
In Chasing Souls we find Reagan and her now teenage twins, Jackie and Maddie, faced with some old enemies. I read this book the day it was released, cover to cover.
... here's my review from Goodreads - 4*
This book, like many of the others by Tia Silverthorne Bach, was fast paced and action packed. I loved the story line and finished reading it in one day. Ms. Bach does a great job of orienting you into her world without long drawn out explanations. Even though I've read the rest of the series, it's been a year (maybe more?) since the last book, and her catch up was perfect as she interspersed information important for this 2nd generation of the Tala Prophecy series.
Twins Maddie and Jackie have only heard tales of the evil red-eyed wolf shifters who seem more like monster of ghost stories than real live creatures. Demons can't really be actual evil can they? Maddie and Jackie find out all too quickly as the past catches up with their family.
On a side note... Chasing Souls also brings in come characters from another new adult paranormal novel of Ms. Bach's, Enchanted Souls. Kudos to Ms. Bach for her imaginative characters and creative, driven story lines!

Chasing Souls Release Day Excerpt

Everyone grouped up according to the directions, and Maddie took off her boxing gloves as they walked. Normally, she would’ve taken them off earlier, but she’d been too distracted.
“I’m not going to take it easy on you,” Gunner whispered in her ear.
A shiver ran down her spine at the close contact as it always did. When she and Gunner had first started their relationship, everyone at home had warned her that she couldn’t trust her emotions around him, that vampires oozed charm and allure. But she trusted him. Not just him, she put full faith in her heart and its ability to know what was real.
“Good to know. Guess I’ll have to give back whatever I get.” She kept her voice low, her eyes unblinking and never wavering from his gaze. “So bring it.” Seeing the flash of want in his eyes, a flicker she knew all too well, gave her an extra boost of adrenaline.
Within a heartbeat, he was behind her, his arm wrapped around her neck. She didn’t hesitate, swiping her right leg behind her and kicking just below his knee, which buckled. As soon as his hold loosened, she spun and thrust her palms into his chest, pushing all her energy into the attack, her left foot behind her as an anchor. Gunner flew several feet through the air, slamming into the back wall of the gym, leaving a slight dent there to add to the others previously created.
“Nice move,” Dad said, but then he suddenly cut his eyes to the other corner, and Maddie followed his gaze.
Xavier had Jackie pinned on the ground, his fangs bared and only inches away from her throat. Without thought, Maddie raced to her twin.
“Knee him in the groin!” Maddie shouted to Jackie’s mind, not slowing down just in case.
With a piercing scream that stopped everyone in their tracks, and causing two of the other vampires who were sparring with Aunt Jessica and Uncle Sam to press their hands against their ears, Jackie thrust her knee into the vampire’s privates and rolled out from underneath him, hopping up and into a crouch, one hand planted on the ground and the other straight out in front of her. By then, Maddie was by her sister’s side, and the two circled Xavier.
A tingling sensation ripped down Maddie’s spine, but before she could turn, a force crashed into her, sending her flying forward. Gunner pinned her to the ground, her face pressed into the cold floor. Unwilling to admit defeat, she remembered a recent class with Aunt Winny. Maddie squeezed her eyes shut and pulled her energy into her core, focusing it on her back, heating it to an uncomfortable temperature, sweat trickling down her forehead and stinging her eyes.
“Freaking—” Gunner jumped off her, and she flipped around to her back and catapulted to her feet in a kip-up maneuver Aunt Jessica had taught Maddie the previous week. She’d have to thank both aunts later.
From the corner of her eye—Maddie refused to lose focus on her opponent again—she noticed Jackie had Xavier on his knees in a choke hold. Aunt Jessica blew into her whistle, a toy she was overly enthusiastic about in Maddie’s opinion, and everyone relaxed and stepped away.

I don't want to overwhelm you with blurbs from each book here, so I'll start with the first...

All the while, the lines between what’s real and what’s a product of her paranormal-obsessed mind are becoming blurred.

The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See

I found the description of the haenyeo society quite interesting. I'd never read about this group of people and the paradoxes of gender roles and responsibilities surprised me. Lisa See does a great job of immersing you in their culture and daily lives. This description is formed around a story of two women, their families, aspirations, struggles, and ultimately friendship pre- and post-World War II, a time rifled with atrocities.
It took a while for me to bond with these characters as the beginning of the book dove into their life on Jeju, but once the plot thickened I grew more attached to the women. This book had some similarities to another of Lisa See's books I'd read, Snowflower and the Secret Fan. Snowflower and the Secret Fan, also a historical fiction, followed the friendship of two women in China.
Happy Reading!

Life and Death – Twilight Reimagined – Thumb’s Up or Down for Twilight Fans?
Twilight fans, have you read Life and Death, Twilight Reimagined, by Stephenie Meyer? The novel was first published in 2015, however I must not be a big enough fan because I didn’t see it until this year. But because I am a decent-enough fan, I snatched the book from the shelf, paid for it at the register, and promptly opened the cover upon returning home.

My Review
The back cover content intrigued me and the promise of “a bold and compelling reimagining of the iconic love story that will surprise and enthrall readers”, with emphasis on the “surprise,” drew to this book. I read the forward and became interested in how the style of writing would be changed from the original Twilight after seeing that 70% of the changes were “because I (Stephenie Meyer) was allowed to do a new editing run ten years later”.
First off, I remembered how laborious it had been to read Twilight the first time I picked it up. As an almost absolute rule, I stay away from saying negative things about other authors, but Stephenie’s writing style didn’t immediately speak to me. Entranced with the storyline of Twilight, those annoyances dissipated. Those irritations lingered farther into this story with Stephenie’s abundant use of “x was y” sentence structure and her style of switching between tenses. It took me till half-way through the book to stop waiting for the “surprise” and enjoy the characters.
Thoughts on Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Allure
I ended up satisfied with the book and gave it a 3/5* (I probably would have marked it 3.5 if that were an option). It left me wondering why. With all my frustrations with the writing style, why did I keep reading and ultimately still love the story? My thoughts turned to the reasons the story spoke to me from the beginning: the protagonist, who feels she/he doesn’t quite fit in, meets the antagonist, who doesn’t fit in but is beloved for beauty and charm nonetheless, likes and adores the protagonists and will do anything to be with her/him. Isn’t that what we all want? A person who puts us above all others? Who will risk their lives for us? Love us forever and never die?
The Twilight Series isn’t a vampire series but the most perfect story of a love that will last forever! Kudos Ms. Stephenie Meyer! Thank you for entertaining, inspiring, and eliciting our passion for these amazing characters! #TeamEdward #TeamJacob #TwilightForever
Happy reading,
Tricia

Roanoke Author Invasion 2019
[image error] Hi Friends!
Roanoke Author Invasion organized by the fabulous Liz Long was another huge fun success this year! This represented my third year attending this event and it definitely won't be the last. Each year I meet new people as well as see returning guests who have become my Roanoke friends. In addition to the amazing organizers and volunteers, Roanoke Author Invasion draws a great author crowd!
Above are some pics from the after party. From left to right, I posed with my editor and friend, Tia Silverthorne Bach, amazing author friend Carrie Thomas (romance author), Fabulous ladies like PM Hernandez (YA author), Kelly Martin (YA and romance author), SJ Pierce (paranormal romance), Tara Benham (fantasy author), Jo Michaels (everything author i the gold hat, I think), and one of my best Roanoke pals and the Volunteer Coordinator, Tobi Helton (blogger or former blogger maybe... she just reads now... more reading= more fun).
As far as new authors go, I met L.B. Carter (YA and mystery/suspense author), Luke Wood (Poetry, Romance, and some horror I hear), and Tina Glasneck (paranormal romance- mythical legends genre, think Norse Gods).
You can check out all the authors from Roanoke Author Invasion on the Facebook page!
Happy reading!
