These rock-n-rollers turn 10 today. No more single digits. (And they got new boards for a new year.) Happy birthday, Boone and Wyatt! Thanks for changing our lives for the better a decade ago.

#Howl

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by the Twitter verification process,

arbitrary fruitless meaningless

Our keyboards are smaller

As are our ideas

Every flow of wisdom removed of its nuance,

reduced simplified hashtagged

When did experience become a liability, the candidate asked

When the idiots took power, the unwashed masses would have answered

If they had the basic intelligence to observe the truth

Beyond their own greasy noses,

their own smudged screen,

the vulgarity of their breath

The representative’s dick pic replaces measured discourse

A throbbing cock intended for an underage girl fucks us all

Equally and without resistance

We take it in, mouths agape

We shove it in the faces of friends we’ve never met

But whose children look adorable

Dressed for a grade school graduation ceremony

With 37 likes and climbing

They should know the new futility of education

A quadratic equation won’t trend

Newton has no followers

And Ginsberg is now nothing more than a meme

[I used to run to get out my aggression, then I drank, then I hit the heavy bag. Now, I write poetry… I’m not sure if this is progression or more of a lateral move.]

davidvienna:

That Elm, That Oak

That elm

That oak

They’ve got decades on me

Centuries maybe

But what have they done

Other than stand erect

Like a sophomore’s cock during a slow song at the homecoming dance

I’ve created

I’ve cried

I’ve forgiven

I’ve hurt

I’ve asked why

Why we are

Why I am

But these fucking trees

They just stand there

Making a big show every autumn

And doing nothing else all year

But providing oxygen

For us doers

For those of us that get shit done

So, tree

Fuck you

I can change my clothes from green to brown, too

I can offer a place for someone to rest their head

I can offer a place for some heartbroken artist to lay down and assess exactly how they’re going to get revenge on their homecoming date with a song

They’ll be the next Kurt Cobain

Maybe they should be the next Tom Waits

But they’re not that nuanced

Not yet

Not until they lay in my shade for a while

A while longer

Stay longer

Stay

That elm

That oak

Resist the temptation to seek companionship from them

They lie

They’ll tell you all you have to do is be

They’re wrong

All you have to do is lie with me

Let’s lie together

Stay and lie with me

Stay

Lie

Patricia Ann Royse: An Obituary

image

On International Women’s Day, I wrote a post about my mother. I mentioned that her health wasn’t what it used to be. She died last week. You can read that post for a more in depth profile of her. But below is the obituary I wrote for her. (I removed the memorial info.)

Patricia Ann Royse, 79, of Greenfield, passed away Thursday,
October 11, 2018.

Patricia was the daughter of Albert and Bessie Royse and one of
five siblings.

A lifelong journalist, Patricia broke down gender barriers as a
pioneering female reporter covering hard news in an era when most newswomen
were unfairly relegated to writing fashion or society stories. She met fellow
reporter, David Vienna, while covering the 1966 Hough riots for the Cleveland Press. They later married and
had two children.

The marriage didn’t last, but her love of hearing and sharing
stories thrived. She went on to work at newspapers such as The Daily Standard in Celina, OH, and The Rockville Gazette in Rockville, MD. When not covering local
news and events, Patricia loved to visit with her family and voraciously read
mystery novels.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Charlotte.

Patricia is survived by her daughter Elizabeth, her son David, her
grandsons Wyatt and Boone, and her three siblings Sue Holcomb, Jerry Royse and
Mike Royse.

Her family and friends will celebrate Patricia’s life with a
memorial event Saturday, November 10.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the International Center for
Journalism at icfj.org or simply share a story with someone.
