Are You Interested in Finding More Readers?

Sherrie Miranda:

Since I am out of town and using iPad or iPhone (iPhone today since my hubby is writing lesson plans), this is a great way to stay connected, as well as expand my followers. Hoping to do a book event Saturday, the 10th. I will keep you all up to date on that.

I was wondering why so many people had turned out, when suddenly: an electrifying moment.

Sherrie Miranda:

Am very glad I figured out how to get in here from my husband’s iPad. We are away from home for 2 weeks & forgiveness is a subject near and dear to my heart. Once I learned to forgive, my life to a rapid change for the better. Remember: you don’t forgive for the other person; you do it for yourself so you can have peace and focus on more important things. Also, just because you forgive someone, you do not have to let them back in your life. If you do allow them back, keep your boundaries up so they can’t hurt you again.

forgive

“On a weekday evening in early September, more than 400 people, from their late teens to their early 80s, crowded into a standing-room-only event on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The topic was not politics, film, fashion, celebrity or any other subject that could be expected to draw such a crowd. The topic was forgiveness. Sitting in the audience, I was wondering why so many people had turned out, when suddenly: an electrifying moment.

About halfway through the discussion, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, a speaker and the author of “Jewish Literacy,” asked this question: “In how many of your families, at the level of first cousin or closer, are there people not on speaking terms?”

Two-thirds of the people in the room raised their hands. I, along with everyone else, gasped.

“I know,” he said. “It’s a staggering figure…

People in the streets

Sherrie Miranda:

Cool photos & a couple videos too! What more could a girl (or boy) ask for? ;-)

What is street photography? Almost everything! Photographing street scenes, public events and human characters; landmarks and architecture, urban environment, transportation… Plus colors, patterns, shadows… Simply everything.

People walk in the streets, but they also do many other things.  They sell and buy stuff, sometimes quite amazing, like this green cat…

… or this hand-made jewelry. Well, the sellers can be remarkable too.

This young man is not texting. He is reading. Not good for the sales, but good for him. I took this picture because of the color arrangement: red parasol and hoodie –  blond hair and wooden kitchenware.

More amazing stuff, and the artist himself is a character.

Street vendors in NYC are not different from their colleagues in  the rest of the world. It is an old photograph – I wonder if anything has changed.

People also perform in the streets.   I already posted about the street performers in Dublin. This guy was spotted in Belfast.

Venice masterclass snapshots: 4 hidden enablers for your story

Sherrie Miranda:

I love what Roz Morris says about “Foreshadowing.” Just a hint is all you need! Also Morris is right-on about “Theme.” I had to delete three-quarters of my ending because it was so heavy-handed. It was good for it to be there as a reminder, but once I remember to add the small touches to the story, they had to go!

Thanks, Roz! ;-)

hidden techniques for writersI’m just back from a few days in Venice teaching a writing masterclass (I know, it’s a hard life). In my lectures, one subject I found I returned to repeatedly was the hidden clues that make a novel work. Readers often don’t realise they are there, and that means they’re hard for a writer to spot.

Does that sound vague? Let’s have some examples.

Foreshadowing

Readers have a strong sense of whether surprises are fair. Sudden fatal coronaries, floods, falling trees and brake failures have to be used with careful judgement because they are convenient for the writer. They must be foreshadowed so that they seem inevitable and surprising but not arbitrary.

So if you wanted to warm the reader up for a car crash, you could plant a hint much earlier in the novel that one of your characters is often fined for speeding, or that it’s Christmas and…

Anasazi

Sherrie Miranda:

Angelo & I were there for the first time a few years ago. It is a cool place to visit & fairly close to the Grand Canyon so you could hit them at the same time. Great shots, Ana! Hope to see you again soon! ;-)

From my archive  – portraits of actor, Sir Ben Kingsley, taken in Santa Barbara, California. One of the many reasons I love photography is that I get to meet people from many different walks of life.

However, I must say that this portrait session was a memorable.

Not only was it an honor to photograph this genius of an actor, but he was/is also very genuine, honest, and kind. He is a spiritual man; after all he did portray the Mahatma, in the multi-award winning film Gandhi.

I’ve been working on my portfolio website, looking through thousands of images; but  more importantly looking at them through different eyes – and different apps. The images posted on my blog were recorded on Kodak Black and White Tri-X film; which I developed myself, and color slide film. For the black and white image, I did a painless adjustment using Priime and instagram.

Jonathan Franzen graced us with his presence Saturday, September 19 to speak about his new novel, Purity. While he was here he imparted some food for thought, admitted to liking the song “Muffin Man” by Frank Zappa, and suggested several novels to add to your collection (or a gift to add to someone else’s):

Elena Ferrante

Elena Ferrante, author of The Days of Abandonment, Troubling Love, and My Brilliant Friend, among others, is one of Italy’s most important and acclaimed contemporary writers. Her true identity is unknown.

The Patrick Melrose Novels

By turns harrowing and hilarious, Edward St. Aubyn’s cycle of novels dissects the English upper class and reveals a dark world of self-loathing, privilege and addiction.

Monday Funnies with Animals…

Sherrie Miranda:

That’s right: TODAY IS MONDAY! I’ve been confused since Saturday as we are now on a 3 week vacation “Fall Break.” It was only supposed to be 2 weeks, but Angelo is playing for my nephew’s wedding the 3rd week so we had to take a 3rd week off.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the animal jokes. Chris, you’ve done it again! ;-)
