Extraordinary person. Ordinary People and their Extraordinary Stories.

Sherrie Miranda:

Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease, but one thing my in-laws discovered was their mother loved music and music sparked her memory of other moments in her life. I met my mother-in-law in the last eight years of her life, but she always remembered my name and she loved coming to my house. Angelo would play her the music she loved. He even took his keyboards to the home just 2 blocks from our house & he played for her right up until the end.

Find out what music the Alzheimer’s patient listened to. And bring that music to him/her.

A very wonderful way to remind people who they were. I would love to be part of a project like this. It is a tribute to the entire family!

Peace & blessings,

Sherrie

DK: Running late, but of course.

DK: Write stories?

JQ: Yes. Many of the people I meet are ill, lonely and rarely visited by family. They look forward to speaking to me. I meet them all in person. Some interviews take 5 hours. Some 30 minutes. I take their picture. All with their consent or consent of a family member.

10 Reasons Why People Who #Read #Books Are More Successful…

Sherrie Miranda:

Wow, so many great benefits from reading! For more than 30 years, I had a TV right in front of my bed & watched it before going to sleep. Recently we put our new king bed in a place where you can’t have a TV right in front of you. I have read 5 novels in just 3 months! And, it’s true, I am sleeping better than I have since I was a child. (I’ve had insomnia for as long as I can remember.) I used to read when I got home from work before I took my nap. And it really does relax you and make you forget the day’s problems.

Of course, No. 9 is true! I wouldn’t have written my novel if I hadn’t read so many novel and memoirs over my lifetime.

As far as No. 10, I totally agree that readers set and achieve a lot more goals than non-readers!

Here’s to READING! And thanks, Chris, The Story Reading Ape for sharing this on your blog! ;-)

Peace,

Sherrie

In a world dominated by gadgets and social media, Americans don’t read nearly as much as they should. In fact, statistics cite that 33 percent of high school graduates never read another book after finishing school, and a whopping 42 percent of college graduates join them four years down the road.

That means those who do read have an immediate advantage over nearly half the population. Influencing skills can make or break just about any business dealings and reading is the most popular way people learn to influence others. No matter your plans in life, reading is going to help you get there directly or indirectly.

Here are 10 reasons why people who read are more successful:

I found this article on The Unbounded Spirit.  If you don’t visit this site I would add it to you read list, they have some good articles.  Anyway, the author is not listed so I am to assume it is the blog operators post:

If you ask me, there are certain qualities each and every human being should have. Qualities that have the power to help each and every one of us to connect with our own selves and the world around us at a deeper level. Crafting better lives for ourselves and those around us and making the world a happier and a lot brighter place to be in. And these qualities are:

1. Faith

Faith in yourself and all that you are. Faith in your abilities. Faith in life and faith in the Infinite intelligence that created us all.

There is no common truth
Rob,
I totally get what you are ...

There is no common truth

Rob,

I totally get what you are saying about “the prevailing myth of resource scarcity.” What I have come to believe is that the leaders of the world want war so they can make more money and have less people wanting money.

If we spent all the money that we spend on war on health and healing, on mourning our losses instead of revenge and vengeance, the world would be enough for all of us. we wouldn’t have a sick earth, nor would we have as many sick people.

We could spend money on honoring those who have passed on, the lack of which, Francis Weller believes is the cause of our addictions, whether they be drugs, shopping or food.

Please, anyone reading this, try to get this month’s (October) The Sun magazine: http://thesunmagazine.org. Each month, they interview someone and this is the 2nd interview I have seen on grieving our losses.

Weller really makes a lot of sense and has validated my own beliefs and feelings: http://thesunmagazine.org/issues/478/the_geography_of_sorrow

I wish you the best on your journey toward health.

Peace,

Sherrie

Real opportunity for indie authors who seek translators and foreign language editions

Sherrie Miranda:

I honestly believe my novel will be much more popular in Spanish, as Latinos like to know about their fellow Latinos and their countries. And Spaniards would likely be interested because of the importance of the Catholic Church in my novel.

Now would be a great time to get this translated and released in Spanish with the popularity of Pope Francis, as well as the beatification of Monseñor Romero, who looms large in my novel.

Not sure if I’m asking too much, as I want a Salvadoran author (preferably fiction) translator, preferably female. I want the translation to have the “Salvadorismos” in it as Salvadorans love to play with their language and add new words. Then there’s also the words that come from the Pipil Indians and other Indigenous people.

As Roz says, translating fiction is very difficult. The translator needs to be completely fluent in both languages. Fortunately, I have friends (ex-in-laws that I really still consider family) who can tell me if the translation is good. In fact, I even know someone who is retired that could do the final editing of the Spanish version. ;-)

I know I can't rush this, but I also don't want to put it on the back burner either. Please wish the best for me in this process.

Peace,

Sherrie Miranda

Sharks and scammers abound, especially as it’s hard to evaluate the results. Then how do you get the translated edition proof read? How do you market in a language you don’t speak?

For years I’ve been exploring options to get my books translated but so far I’ve had false starts. I’ll share a few cautionary tales below. But the reason I’m writing this post is because Amazon Publishing has opened up an important new opportunity. Its imprint AmazonCrossing, which publishes works in translation, has announced it’s seeking submissions from rightsholders, including indie authors (apply here).

This would be a publishing deal, of course, so much depends on whether you’re a good fit…

Monday Funnies with AUNTY ACID…

Sherrie Miranda:

I need to start remembering to get up Monday morning and immediately look for Chris The Story Reading Ape’s “Monday Funnies with Aunty Acid”! Although we still have 10 1/2 hrs. of Monday here in Cali, it would be much better to post the funnies as soon as I jump out of bed!

And I got up early this morning! Ok, it could be better, but for a day when I don’t have to get up to go to work, it’s pretty damn good! ;-)

HAVE A GREAT REST OF YOUR MONDAY, EVERYONE!

Peace,

Sherrie

Big in the Netherlands

Sherrie Miranda:

I understand, Eric, your wanting more and more followers (and commenters, etc.). I almost didn’t even start my blog as I thought it would be a waste of my (precious ;->) time. After I finally had it up & running, it took me months just to figure out how to do certain things, like share it in other sites. And I still haven’t figured out how to get those flags in there (though I have them in my blogspot blogs. Those blogs are not about writing – they are about other subjects that interest me.)

Anyway, now I am glad about whatever happens because the post also goes to my FB page (where I have 5K plus connections), Twitter (that is growing by leaps & bounds – thanks to my publicist!) and several other social sites.

So I am glad my blog followers are growing, but I have learned not to get hung up on any one thing. Life is about moving forward and only looking back to learn the lessons so let’s all just keep moving forward!

Sherrie

P.S. I love your comment about “Chocolate.” I actually met a woman in Switzerland who was biting the tops off the liquor-filled chocolates she got for Xmas, dumping the liquor down the drain and eating the chocolates like there was no tomorrow! She was Swiss-French, if that makes any difference! ;-)

Since I’ve started blogging I’ve been fascinated (ok I admit it obsessed) by the statistics. I know all the season bloggers say to forget about the views and just write. That is easier said than done. I’m happy the way my blog is going, slowly increasing its readership and getting a decent number of views. At the time of writing this I have 246 followers and my best day I had 192 views. Small compared to some but still progress.

What I really like is seeing is the breakdown of the origin of viewers overall. Most of mine come from the USA not the UK. But I also get quite a few from all countries of the globe. I have had 44 from the Netherlands mainly due to some friends I used to play WoW with and have stay in touch over Facebook. I’ve had 29 from Thailand all…

Lucky Number 7

Sherrie Miranda:

Erica,

I love how you describe yourself. And I think it is really cool that you learned to do all the “boy stuff.” We have a nephew that married a woman like that and she can tile a floor or fix a car like “the best of them!” I, in many ways, was a girly-girl, but my brother did take us on adventures in the woods so, at least, I had that!

I thin it is WAAAY COOOOL that you are following your passion and king what you love! I don’t believe your daughter really wants you to be that “old lady” in a rocking chair. She just thinks she does! If you think you can pull it off, they being that for a day & see how she reacts! It would be hard IF you had to do it the entire day, but you only have to do it when she’s around. ;-) I would love to hear what happens, how she reacts to that. If she doesn’t appreciate you now, don’t worry; she will one day! (I know as I have an artist friend whose daughter is now her best friend – the daughter is with music what the mom was with visual art!)

You are my hero! I wish I could give you an award!
