Maurice, affectionately known as Maurey, is the youngest son of Maureen Ardglass.  He is quietly spoken and can be shy around people whom he doesn't know well.  He has a studious nature, taking an interest in academic pursuits.  This led him to study law.  Later he became a lawyer in the family firm of Shanahan & Ardglass.  Dancer and martial artist Mildred (Millie) Cox developed a personal interest in him and managed to break down his reticent barriers.  Much to the surprise of family members and friends, they married.

Virian-born Sam works as a window-cleaner and general labourer.  His cheerful easy-going manner and his robust sense of humour make him popular and likable.  The Ardglass family and the Shanahan family have been friends for decades.  Sam works alongside his brother Vanlose and his best friend Levene Shanahan in their self-employed ventures.  When he falls for the supposedly unattainable and glamorous Irae Batalan, no-one expects his infatuation to be reciprocated.  He manages to thaw her icy veneer and they become good companions as well as intimate partners.

Irae is half-Yttrian, half-Carpathian.  She is named after Iraevesh, the Carpathian Goddess of Justice.  Her family is wealthy and she leads a privileged lifestyle.  She is expected to marry into a family of similar standing.  Instead, she defies convention and falls for the rustic charms of Virian window-cleaner and labourer Sam Ardglass.

The former Argili Estate, located in the Geryalah Provinceof Central Varathusia, was purchased and taken over by the Varathusian branchof the Vyrdigaan Order.  It has beenrepurposed as a multi-functional space for members of the Vyrdigaan/CarpathianAlliance to live, work and study.

The Estate occupies a vast area of land in the Geryalah countryside.  Within its boundaries are several largemansions, conference chambers, computer laboratories, training facilities for amultitude of disciplines, utility buildings and the huge library famed for itsmassive collection of books, scrolls and other storage media.

Due to the machinations of Lord Claudio Scalani, theGeryalah Enclave has been designated as one of the Sacred Spaces.

Vibert Kazimierz was the only son of Azmiel Kazimierz and Vibernia Morut.  His mother's death gave him abandonment issues and mental health issues.  He struggled to overcome his addiction to recreational drugs.  He worked as a private investigator alongside his father.  His intense moody personality made him difficult to deal with.  He embarked on a relationship with Darien Batalan but his jealousy and abandonment issues often got in the way.

Farid Gwyllym lived and worked on a kolkhoz (state-run collective farming community) in the Yttrian countryside.  He was in a relationship with Darien Batalan during her time at the kolkhoz.  When Darien left, he went to Kashmir City to find her.  He has a cheerful optimistic personality and prefers to believe the best of people until proven otherwise.  He is helpful and hard-working.  He has some criminal form, due to his links with certain rogue traders and gangsters.

Vronytza Stjelskad worked as laboratory assistant to Mendel Giragrakian.  While working together, their relationship deepened and they became lovers.  Although Vronytza is several decades younger than Mendel, they have many common interests which enable them to form a strong connection.  Vronytza is a quietly courageous young woman.  When she goes to live on Sartoria after defecting from the Cyad Confederacy, she quickly adapts to her new life.  Later she helps Mendel settle in there.  They have the freedom to grow in their love and to pursue new careers.

Character Profile: Lord Luigi Nentofore

Name: Lord Luigi Nentofore

Origin: Carpathian

Appearance: Short, skinny, light brown skin,bald headed but wears a bandage around his head to cover a wound.  Usually dresses in bandages with odd scrapsof fabric attached.  His face and handsare grimy but his body is clean beneath the bandages.

Personality: Eccentric child-like behaviourand childish manner of speech hide a great intellect.  He is a devious Spy Master but most peoplewould not recognise him as such.  Heoften speaks in riddles and nods and grins a lot.  Gives the impression that he is a babblingfool.  (He was a famous motor racingdriver for many years until a serious accident caused him to give upprofessional driving.  He then became acircus acrobat, but now prefers to live rough in a deprived district inVaskrath City)

Family: The Nentofore Family, one of thelargest families within the Carpathian Way, numbering hundreds of members.  They are Third Echelon, which is a relativelylow rank.  Hugely wealthy, their familyestates resemble cities.  They are aneccentric family who disdain many of the usual social protocols of theCarpathian Way.

Strengths: Physically very strong andagile.  Expert at hacking, lock-picking,climbing, stunt driving, acrobatics, flying and martial arts.  Is a channeller or empath, able to pick up onpeople’s emotions easily.  Very caringand nurturing.

Weaknesses: People don’t tend to take himseriously.  His childish babbling can behard to understand.

Likes: His family, jumping off tallbuildings, flying, jumping up and down on beds, living amongst the homelesscommunity, talking in riddles, driving very fast and recklessly.

Dislikes: Formal dressing (although he willscrub up and wear a suit when necessary), injustice, bullying, any threats tohis extended family.

Appearance: Overseven spans tall, heavy muscular build, long dark messy hair and beard.  There is a mass of scar tissue where his eyesused to be.  His preferred garment is anold oilskin cape.  On rare occasions, hewears priestly robes.

Personality: Guardedand private around strangers.  Loving andprotective towards the street people in his community.

Family: TheSyrkassian family.

Abilities: Immensestrength.  His weak crystal bond helpshim to sense his way around, compensating for his lack of eyesight.

Strengths: Goodstreet-fighting and martial arts skills. Also accomplished at knife-fighting. Good at reading people.

Weaknesses: Worriesa lot, especially about Alana.  Sufferslingering psychological trauma from the sorcerous assault which left him blind.

Likes: Hanging outwith the other street people, practising his martial arts and playing chess.

Dislikes: Authorityfigures and formal occasions.  Feelsuncomfortable when he has to leave the streets.
