ECM Publishers: Sen. Franken offers congratulations to the graduating Class of 2011

It's graduation season, and across Minnesota, students are taking big steps forward. Amidst all the congratulations and well wishes, they're hearing a lot of advice on how to succeed in the world.

Here's the thing I tell younger folks about success: It doesn't always come the way you think it will. In fact, "success" doesn't always even end up meaning the same thing you thought it would when you started out.

Minnesota Independent:Obama, Franken speak out against Minnesota anti–gay marriage amendment

Sen. Al Franken and the White House both issued statements on Monday regarding a proposed anti–gay marriage amendment to the Minnesota Constitution. Obama's message was lukewarm; he said leaving the issue to the states was the best idea, while Franken said the amendment would write discrimination into the Minnesota Constitution.

MinnPost.com: Franken bill would block mandatory arbitration clauses in cell phone contracts

In response to a recent Supreme Court case upholding mandatory arbitration clauses in consumer agreements, like cell phone contracts, a group of Democratic lawmakers including Sen. Al Franken have introduced legislation that would largely reverse that decision.

Franken's bill would prevent forced arbitration clauses in civil rights, consumer and employment cases, thus allowing consumers to always have a court option in disputes.

Huffington Post: Air of Inevitability Escaping From AT&T's Takeover of T-Mobile

There was a notable hissing sound emanating from Capitol Hill at the end of last week. It was the air being let out of AT&T's trial balloon, "The Inevitable." Thanks to some aggressive questioning from the Senate Antitrust Subcommittee, particularly Chairman Herb Kohl (D-WI) and Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken ( both D-MN), it quickly became clear that there are lots of problems to the $39 billion takeover of T-Mobile that AT&T either hadn't counted on, didn't want to deal with or thought would simply be overlooked.

New York Times: Gutting Class Action

The Supreme Court's 5-to-4 vote in AT&T Mobility v. Concepcion is a devastating blow to consumer rights. By upholding the arbitration clause in AT&T's customer agreement requiring the signer to waive the right to take part in a class action, the court provided other corporations with a model of how they can avoid class actions. It gave companies even more power when it also ruled out class-based arbitrations.
