One of my favorite ways to start working on a story is to have some almost impossibly absurd moment in my head and then to try and ground that absurd moment in reality. I ask myself, "How would two people end up in this situation?" and go from there. Now, usually this process turns out just to be an exercise and the story doesn't go anywhere, but every once in a while...

For Dirt Nap Rhapsody I had this idea of a man being led to his execution, but instead of appearing sullen or afraid, looking very content and satisfied and blowing kisses and happily waving to a mysterious figure on the other side of the two-way mirror. The cover and the title are the first thing about the book that people see and so it's important to me to put my best foot forward. And now that the title has drawn you in, I hope you consider giving it a look. Thanks again. (less)

Jules Cassard, Dirt Nap Rhapsody

“I don't mind your showing me your legs. They're very swell legs and it's a pleasure to make their acquaintace. I don't mind if you don't like my manners. They're pretty bad. I grieve over them during the long winter nights.”

“I wanted all things
To seem to make some sense,
So we could all be happy, yes,
Instead of tense.
And I made up lies
So that they all fit nice,
And I made this sad world
A par-a-dise.”
Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country

“Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'
