In Depth Look at The Walking Dead: March to War!
Disruptor Beam’s new mobile game The Walking Dead: March To War is getting closer to dropping on your phones! To help celebrate the upcoming release, Erika Ishii got to sit down with Creative Director Joey Lapegna to dig through the game’s fundamental look, style and overall story.
I gotta say, first and foremost – the art in March to War is incredible.
I’ve never seen art like this incorporated so well into a video game, let alone a mobile game. Joey’s team did an amazing job. They essentially created an intelligent algorithm and formula to take their basic art assets, organize them, arrange them into settings, and utilize them even better than doing this in a manual way. How incredible is that?! But even more potentially tantalizing is the story.
This game takes place during the same time period and arc of the same name in the comics – March To War. Set in a and around Washington DC, you’ll come to discover the same colonies and groups you’ve grown accustomed to – The Kingdom, Hilltop, Alexandria, and the Sanctuary. You can also find some notable landmarks yet to be seen much in the post apocalypse that you may have heard of, even a giant white home.
Included are some of the main characters from the comics as what are called “Council Members”. They are important to building your team and creating leadership that will help you in different ways. However, the most important people are the Survivors – random characters that you’ll need to customize, strengthen, and organize in order to continue to make your team the best it can be.
An important aspect to defeating hordes of zombies is teaming up with your friends. It’s multiplayer, guys!
You and your friends can gang up and complete raids and other missions in order to survive and create stronger alliances.
It’s not all oranges and peaches and cake (that’s a weird combination of foods). You’ll continually face obstacles, zombies and enemies that will force you to decide your team’s specialty. Any survivors on your team that don’t fit that mold may not be worth wasting your resources on. You’ll have some seriously difficult decisions to make at every stop along the way.
We’re hoping you dig into this interview – Joey really lays down some excellent information on how to get started on the game when it comes out, and what you can expect to face when you start creating your team.
If you’re as excited as we are, you should register at www.MarchToWar.com for developments and news as we get closer to our release date.
We also have Facebook and Twitter accounts for the game!
That’s it for us this week everyone, but please make sure to follow Erika & Joey!
Erika Ishii – @erikaishii
Joey Lapegna – @jlapegna
If you missed it check out OUR LAST INTERVIEW with legendary actor Phil Lamarr! He’s not only an amazing talent, but he puts it towards his fandom of Invincible and does a really fun fan-casting for an animated series he wishes existed today!
See you guys next week!

Announcing: Evolution
“Evolve or die.” That simple phrase, to me, really gets to the core of what EVOLUTION is all about. Taking place all over the world as humanity starts to rapidly evolve, this series follows three unique characters who notice the seemingly unseen transformation taking place and attempt to do everything in their power to fight back and save the human race as we know it.
For a story as expansive and world-changing as EVOLUTION, we knew we couldn’t tell the story in a normal way so this book includes a murderer’s row of not just one writer, but four writers working together to tell one cohesive story. This writing team has to be one of the best creative teams ever assembled. Telling the story of a doctor in Philadelphia desperately trying to warn the world, Christopher Sebela has written a frantic race against time. In Rome, James Asmus and Joshua Williamson show us the internal struggle of a nun questioning her faith in the face of the new species. And finally, in Los Angeles, Joseph Keatinge has built a heartrending story of what happens when old relationships are torn to shreds by forces beyond all control. Separately, any one of these stories could anchor their own book but when told together this team has assembled something that has rarely been seen in comics and the results are nothing short of extraordinary.
I’d be remiss to talk about this book, however, without mentioning the utter badassery of artist Joe Infurnari and colorist Jordan Boyd. Reading through the scripts for this series, I would often catch myself wondering how an artist would be able to draw such sheer gonzo grossness let alone make it appealing, but I’d be underselling it if I said that Joe has drawn one of the most beautiful, disgusting, wonderful books I’ve ever seen. Truly, the images in this book would make David Cronenberg blush with jealous rage over not having done something this cool. And the colors! It’s hard to describe just how much Jordan Boyd’s colors add to this book without just screaming with joy. To render such gross transformations with such beauty truly is remarkable. No exaggeration, this is one of the most fantastic, crazy, gruesome, gorgeous books I’ve ever worked on.
EVOLUTION #1 goes on sale Wednesday, November 15th and if you want to see the next stage of humanity, your best bet is to preorder the series at your local comic shop. Until then, take a look at the preview pages below and enjoy the transformation.

EVOLUTION—AN UNPREDICTABLE, THOUGHT-PROVOKING NEW HORROR SERIES
Image/Skybound Entertainment unites writers James Asmus, Joseph Keatinge, Christopher Sebela, and Joshua Williamson with artists Joe Infurnari and Jordan Boyd to create a new global phenomenon in EVOLUTION. The new series is set to launch with an oversized debut issue this November.
“Society now moves at an exponentially rapid pace. Our technology processes information faster than our biology is capable of handling,” said Keatinge. “Evolution explores what happens when this goes awry when humanity is left behind by its progress, venturing into unexpected, horrifying directions.”
Asmus added: “If reading this book is anything like writing it, it’ll be a disturbing, thought-provoking, and cathartic ride through some very real anxieties about shifting society, what lurks inside us, and realizing just how few guard rails there are keeping us safe. But with enough twists, body horror, and murder that keep it fun!”
Human evolution has taken millions of years to get to the stage it’s reached in EVOLUTION. But next week, we become something new. Around the world, humanity is undergoing rapid and unpredictable changes, and only three individuals seem to notice that their world is being reborn. But what can they do about it?
“Horror is a slippery and weird genre,” said Sebela. “Not everything scares everyone else the same way. But I know what I want out of mine: long tendrils of dread, a fog of doom, deep conspiracies, monsters—especially the human variety—and loss.
Evolution’s horror focuses on that sense of loss, one that can be as deadly as a psycho in a mask. Loss of control over our world, our lives and even our bodies, it’s everything we’re always facing but in a much bloodier package.”
EVOLUTION #1 (Diamond Code SEP170638) will be available in stores on Wednesday, November 15th. The final order cutoff from retailers is Monday, October 23rd.

Moving into the digital content space, Skybound produced the first-ever narrative VR series, GONE, for Samsung’s Milk VR platform and in 2017 will produce VR horror series Lies Within, which is the first project out of Skybound’s partnership with interactive theatrical company Delusion. The company currently has a number of different film projects in development including properties for their two-year first look deal with Universal.
