HOW TO FIGHT
I received an email over the weekend asking what I do to fight depression. I don’t have a linear answer but all attempts result in doing whatever it takes to ride it out. If you don’t experience this phenomenon, one way to explain depression is that a terrible storm arrives within your head, triggered or out of nowhere, and it rattles hope, joy, worth and existence while remaining just slightly out of reach of switching it on or off. And you’d think you could just change your disposition, but yo...

NICK THE KNIFE
Photo from Jean Genet’s Un chant d'amour (1950)
For your enjoyment… Here is a song for you kind paid subscribers. The story is - it’s a demo from 2012 and was maybe going to be a Cold Cave song but ultimately decided it was not exactly the direction I was headed. It was made with an old friend Cody who played guitar live with CC on tour that same year. T…

PLENTY FOR ALL
Friday through Sunday I fought against crippling depression. It arrived out of nowhere, like a storm inside the head. You can see a break in the fog and lightning and rain but have to wait it out. I weathered it through by midday Monday. I wonder if these storms will ever go away for good. I guess people who live on tropical islands know that it’s all just part of the climate. Now I’ve got the windows open and sunglasses on and am headed back out to enjoy the day.
In the same way it’s just easie...

BLEND INTO SHADOW, FIGHT AGAINST DARKNESS
Heaven knows I’ve missed you over the last week. I made this bizarre attempt at relaxation and enjoying just being. I’m unsure if this worked out or if it just happened and I got mostly nothing from it, which is why doing nothing for my greater good is something I don’t mostly do. Basically what I’m saying is I sat in a hot tub for the last week. And I read a lot outside in the shade under the sun. And I didn’t look at my phone. And sometimes I just stared at the ocean for hours. We went to see ...

SHOPLIFTING IN A GHOST TOWN - PART 5 - SAN FRANCISCO
SAN FRANCISCO - JANUARY 13, 2022
I’m going to share a draft of a book I’ve been working on called Shoplifting In A Ghost Town over a series of posts. It’s formatted as a journal from American Nightmare’s January 2022 “Background Music” 20th year anniversary tour which naturally coincided with peak Coronavirus Omicron breakout… but that format was just an easy guide to write in and out of cities and memories. It’s broken up into eight chapters which was the scheduled itinerary of the shows… Boston...

NEW TATTOO
7:11 am
Hello and Good Friday to you… it’s been a week and I hope you are well and perhaps with even some nice plans for the weekend… It’s been work work work here with tour announcements and book editing and in-between I tried to work on music but the energy was always off and felt like I was trying to fit it in-between.
By the way… Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket to one of the upcoming shows. It’s so helpful to us when that happens and very appreciated.

BOSTON HARDCORE - SOME OF THE WORST MUSIC EVER MADE

Happy 23rd. I was supposed to fly to Denver today for a week long poetry class at Naropa University in Boulder with Thurston Moore and Anne Waldman but had to bail much to my dissatisfaction and irritation and due to a variety of pains in my head and ass… I’ve folded and will stay in LA.

IT'S THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER
Good morning from the land of drained adrenals. First sips of coffee and trying to focus my eyes. I’ve been home for over a week now and per usual, those first few days were spent trying to un-rattle my brain, from bed. I’m in headphones writing to you. Listening to The Names’ 1982 Martin Hannett produced album Swimming.
