Just in time for Christmas: Win an ARC of The Gardener!

With all the Christmas decorations stores have out, I'm feeling in the mood for presents. So here is a gift for you: the chance to win a seriously shiny new ARC of The Gardener.
A couple cool facts about the cover. The art is by Matt Mahurin. (Google him, he's very famous and cool, not to mention talented.) Second, The Gardener is the very first Feiwel and Friends ARC to ever include the cover art, and I'm very honored they chose my book to be the first.
The book will be released in June, s...

Law Abiding Sister's Keeper: A movie review

We have one old theatre in town ( advertised as "the second oldest screen in Oregon) which gets movies, one at a time, about a month after they hit the rest of the world. Last night we decided to go see "Law Abiding Citizen". First, we were the only people there. And it was about thirty degrees. My husband said, "We should have brought a blanket." I zipped up my coat and pulled my arms out of my sleeves, which helped.
I'm a big Gerard Butler fan, and the trailers made this look like he was ...

My Reformed 2009 NaNoWriMo Strategy

The first year I did National Novel Writing Month was 2005. That year, I wrote the story that would become The Compound, my first published novel. "Winning" NaNoWriMo means hitting 50,000 words, and I didn't actually win that year, as I clocked in at about 45,000. And then I revised, big time, at one point even having to dump 240 pages of 250 and start over. Still,I worked my butt off and sold the novel in June of 2006.

In 2006, my NaNo project was the story that would become The Gardener, my ...

NaNo Interruptions

Lunchtime Text from Daughter #2 Did You buy me Looney Tunes fruit snacks?

Me:  Yes

Did you put a Looney Tunes fruit snack in my lunch today?

Me: Yes

Ok. Nika did not believe me. She thought I stole hers.

Me: Nope. It is yours.

What is mine? Nika wants you to clearly state it.

Me: The fruit snacks. I have the box right here.

Tell me you put the looney tunes fruit snacks in my lunch

Me: Yes! I put the looney tunes in your lunch today! I will label them from now on!

OK

On Norma Fox Mazer and Banned Books...

In 1977, I was in seventh grade and loved to read. So it drove me nuts that our language arts teacher had us read a book in common, but we were not allowed to read ahead. Our first book of the year was Saturday the Twelfth of October by Norma Fox Mazer. If you aren't familiar with the story, it begins in Central Park and the main character is transported back to BC, where she meets two cave people. So the first chapter, the only part we read that day, used the word "breast" when describing th...

a thought on reviews

About a year ago I stopped looking at reviews on Goodreads. Mainly because people can be just mean-hearted. I mean, if I don't like a book, do I really think saying so will deter others from reading it? And why would I do that in the first place? Everyone deserves to experience a book and decide for themselves. I guarantee someone else will absolutely love a book I hate and vice versa. It's the way of the universe.

Here is a review I just found on Goodreads:

"If I could give this book a zero...

Going Dutch

UPS called me today. I've never gotten a call from UPS before. But, we live in a town with no mail delivery. So our address is a PO Box when, of course, UPS needs your street address.  So just as I leave the house to take a kid some where, the UPS station wagon drives up the road. ( Never seen a UPS station wagon before either.) So I whipped a U-y and pulled into the driveway. ( As I think about this now, I could have been anyone off the street. Hmm) So he gave me my big box, return address i...

NYC trip Part One

I totally underestimated the effect of traveling across three time zones and back in less than four days. Feeling very blech. Especially with the cold I seem to have picked up along the way. When I travel, I'm a dumper. Here is my pile from the car, still on my kitchen floor:

And in 24 hours, the view out my window has gone from this:

Back to this:

Glad to be home, will post pictures of my trip soon...
