An ARC of Adam and Eve!
I'll be getting little to no writing done today, because I just got this in the mail.

I have been dying to read this book! Sena Jeter Naslund is the esteemed director of the Spalding Low-Residency MFA program in Louisville, my alma mater, and her novel Ahab's Wife is on my Top-Ten list of favorite books ever. If you haven't read it, you need to go and get it. Today. I cannot wait to read this one, and am off to do so right now...

Reading reading reading...

One, a total award-winner, best-selling, etc. shall remain nameless because I fell asleep twice while reading it, once at 10 am. I just gave up and took it back to the library, because this one had arrived:

Some Magic Rules for Getting Published
I'm an instructor with Gotham Writer's Workshop, and the last week of class I open up the dialogue for any and all questions about how to get published. A few things I always tell them:
There are no magic rules for getting published. Face it. Go sacrifice some small woodland animals to the publishing gods if you wish, but it isn't going to help. What will help?
1. Do your research. When I was trying to get published, I always got the newest edition of Children's Writers and Illustrators...

Show and Tell
My friend David LaRochelle directed me toward a cool new blog from Amy Timberlake about what children's writers and illustrators do when they aren't writing or illustrating. Check it out: http://showandtellme.tumblr.com/

I love The Book Parlor
I live in the middle of nowhere in the high desert of Eastern Oregon. ( Although our town is on the USA Today weather map every day, which makes me feel part of the world, at least) Other than a McDonald's, Dairy Queen, Subway, Rite Aid, and Safeway, we are 130 miles from the nearest chain of any kind. This means the local independent businesses get to flourish, because they have a captive retail audience. Plus they are just great stores owned by very nice people, which makes you want to buy...
