California State Fair 2009

note the corn dog in the fat bear's hand
On Labour Day, David and I celebrated the working class by visiting the California State Fair in sunny Sacramento. David purchased tickets online weeks and weeks ago, but with my surprise travel to NC and other activities this was the first chance we had to go to the fair together.
We arrived around 4pm and it was actually pretty quiet. I was expecting a larger crowd on closing day, but there was plenty of parking and we were able to get into exhibits...

Surprise! I'm in North Carolina!

[image error]I decided, about a month ago, to take a surprise trip to NC to see my parents. It was interesting creating this ruse, because they kept asking me to plan my trip for October so we could go to the state fair together. Obviously I already had other plans in mind and couldn't say anything.
But here's the fun part – since it was a surprise visit I wanted to do something that would slowly reveal the surprise vs. me just showing up and knocking on the front door. Been there done that for...

Supply and Demand in the World of Prostitution

[image error]A Prostitute in Mexico
Prostitution is based on the law of supply and demand. The thinking is: Women won't stop selling sex until men stop buying.
So Nashville and a growing number of cities are shifting their focus from locking up suppliers to educating buyers. Across the country, about 50 communities are using John Schools. Atlanta, Georgia, and Baltimore, Maryland, are among dozens more cities that plan to launch similar programs by the end of the year. [Full Article]

Teacher gets sued for saving school from bomber

That's probably what the headline is going to read a month from now. At least, that's what I'm predicting given how litigious our society is. Here's the background for you to judge for yourself.
SAN MATEO, Calif. — A teacher being hailed as a hero said Tuesday he had no time to think when he encountered a 17-year-old boy who detonated two pipe bombs at a Northern California high school while armed with a chain saw, sword and explosives.
Teacher Kennet Santana, 35, is one of a number of Hillsdale H

Fine Dining and Cats

On the 20th, David celebrated his 41st birthday. Actually he has been mildly celebrating the entire month of August, but the 20th is the real day in question.
Many months ago I had made plans for us to go see Cats at the Music Circus. He knew about it, no surprise there because I specifically asked if he wanted to go on his birthday evening. But for dinner we were having a hard time coming up with a brand new place to go.
We could have gone to any number of our favourite places – in whichever genr

She Wears Short Shorts

Dana Felthauser / AP
Oh America…we have so many important issues to be resolved in our country. Health-care, equal rights, poverty / homelessness, abused children, H1N1, and apparently how short the First Lady's shorts are.
Let's call an urgent session of Congress and pass a law limiting shorts to 1″ above the knee! It's a major world-wide crisis!
First the first lady got America talking about the right to bare arms. Now people are buzzing about whether it's right for her to bare her legs.

Baby Boomers are costing us bajillions

Apparently it's a health care crisis in the works (just when we were starting to make progress to be like the rest of the natural world). Look out world, the baby boomers are smoking pot even though they aren't in college any more!
"This continued use poses medical risks to these individuals and is likely to put further strains on the nation's health care system — highlighting the value of preventing drug use from ever starting." [Article]
Blah, blah. It is interesting that the issue is more about
