Navigating Writer’s Block: 6 Simple Strategies

Every writer encounters writer’s block at some point in their career. Those times when you just can’t seem to get anything onto the page. It’s not uncommon for any creative to face writer’s block, even if they’ve been writing for decades. Luckily, writer’s block isn’t forever. But if you’re currently dealing with a bout of writer’s block and looking for a way to overcome it, you have come to the right place! Let’s dive into some practical tips on pushing through writer’s block and getting back on track!

1. Create A Task Outline

Have you ever faced a project as big as a mountain? It can feel almost impossible to start when you consider all you need to do, even if you want to do it. A simple but effective trick is to break up that massive task into micro-tasks. When writing your book, this is an essential first step in the writing process and helps keep you on track. Having an outline of everything you want to do for a project can help you identify where you need to start or where you can move forward.

Example Task: Write the conclusion of my book

Outlined Task:

Brainstorm ideasIdentify the main purposeCreate conclusion outlineGather resources/referencesWrite the first draftRevise draft

By simplifying the process into manageable steps, you can tackle any task that comes your way!

2. Change Your Environment

Changing your environment can give you a fresh perspective. Encountering different sights, events, and experiences can reignite your creative spark. Here are some of our favorite ways to get inspired:

Library: It’s free and a great place to interact with many types of people.Cafe: Nothing helps you feel better than trying a new food!Park: Enjoying fresh nature is a sure way to feel refreshed and ready to try a new angle.3. Read for Inspiration

While at the library, consider picking up a few books to inspire your writing. Or check out one of Elite Online Publishing’s books to help you move forward. Reading creative works by our favorites, writing guides, or works from new groundbreaking authors can lead to unlikely sources of inspiration. Try a different author or read something from an unread genre to generate new ideas.

4. Free Writing

Sometimes, the biggest wall we face is ourselves. Your own inner critic can discourage you from thinking that anything you get down is good enough. So try to get out as much as you can. A free writing secession is just you and your stream of consciousness written on the page. Set a timer for at least 10 minutes and write whatever you want. Focus on the next chapter or theme, brainstorm lessons you want in your book, or if you’re really stuck, try writing about your day.

5. Talk It Out

Hearing an idea out loud can give you the perspective you need. Talk the problem out with a friend, relative, coworker, or fellow author. Whoever you talk to doesn’t need to be an expert in writing or have great ideas. Just the act of verbalizing your ideas can provide clarity.  Moreover, talking with someone trusted can give you the boost you need to get back on track and stay motivated throughout your writing journey.

6. Writing Prompts

When you’re stuck, writing prompts can be the spark that reignites your creativity. They offer a way to bypass the daunting blank page by providing a structured starting point that can lead to unexpected and exciting writing directions. Whether it’s a single word, a sentence, or a scenario, these prompts encourage your mind to explore new ideas without the pressure of a broader narrative. You can find a variety of prompts online tailored to different genres, or challenge yourself by creating your own based on themes relevant to your current project. Engaging with prompts helps overcome blocks and expands your creative prowess by pushing you to think outside your usual patterns.

Remember: You’ve Got This!

Overcoming writer’s block is a part of every writer’s journey. While it can be frustrating, the strategies outlined above provide a roadmap to help you navigate through it. Remember, every writer is different, and part of dealing with writer’s block is figuring out what works best for you. Whether it’s breaking down tasks, changing your environment, engaging in free writing, reading for inspiration, talking it out, or using writing prompts, each strategy offers a unique avenue to reignite your creative engine. Keep experimenting with these techniques, and soon you’ll find yourself back in the flow, your words filling the pages once again.

FAQQ1: How long should I spend on free writing to effectively overcome writer’s block

Free writing can be highly effective when done in short, focused bursts. Typically, spending 10-15 minutes is sufficient to bypass your inner critic and get ideas flowing. However, feel free to adjust the duration based on how the session progresses and your comfort level.

Q2: Are there specific types of reading material more effective for inspiring writing?

While any reading can be inspiring, literature that resonates with you personally or is relevant to your writing project can be particularly stimulating. If you’re writing fiction, exploring novels in your genre might spark ideas. Reading related articles, essays, or biographies for non-fiction can provide new insights and perspectives.

Q3: Can writer’s block be a sign that I need to take a longer break from my project?

Yes, persistent writer’s block might indicate the need for a longer break. Sometimes, stepping away from your project for a few days or even weeks can help clear your mind and rejuvenate your enthusiasm for the work. Use this time to engage in different creative activities or rest so you can return to your writing with a fresh perspective and renewed energy.

A forgotten battle. A live-aboard dive vessel. Will exploring what lies under the coral tear these men apart?

America, 1985. Nick Mitchel is wracked by grief. Destroyed by his beloved wife’s death, the retiree is fighting to keep his flashbacks from disturbing long-buried truths. And a diving expedition in the Pacific Ocean he’d hoped would heal old wounds only reopens dark memories of the war…

Japan. Junichi Takahashi is brimming with indignation. After surviving the WWII firebombing of Tokyo as a child, he resents his dying father’s request to explore a sunken graveyard. And with the location now a tourist mecca for scuba divers, he’s furious that one of his nation’s most tragic losses has turned into an underwater playground.

As Nick struggles with nightmarish visions, his anger awakens when a saboteur starts tampering with his equipment. And as Junichi battles to make peace with his grim history, he confronts Nick in a dangerous collision of perspectives.

Can the two men salvage anything from the wreckage of a bitter conflict?

Eye Contact Over Truk is a heartrending work of historical fiction. If you like nuanced characters, emotional journeys, and surreal backdrops, then you’ll love Stephanie Woodman’s thought-provoking exploration of the past.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stephanie Woodman is an avid collector of experiences and a perpetual student of life. Despite her analytical background with a long engineering career and a short tenure as a high school math teacher, Stephanie has a powerful creative side which has manifested itself in her debut novel, Eye Contact Over Truk, a decades-long endeavor which was started in 1996 and finished after her retirement in 2021. With the additional life experience, her writing transformed to explore themes of perseverance, forgiveness, grief, loss, life, love, and adventure. This evolution of her story is captured best by Mark Twain’s timeless adage that “history often rhymes.”

Outside the realm of literature, Stephanie loves playing pickleball and golf, scuba diving, sailing, traveling the world, and spending time with her son, who is now starting his own adventure in college. She helps students in her community in robotics programs and is also known for her past role as a clown, bringing laughter and joy to those in need.

Accelerate Your Book Writing Journey

Every author seeks ways to streamline the process and enhance productivity when writing a book. Whether you’re a first-time writer or a seasoned author, increasing your efficiency can lead to more profound satisfaction and quicker results. Here are essential tips to help you accelerate your book-writing journey effectively.

1. Set Clear, Achievable Goals

Start by setting clear, realistic goals for your writing. An excellent way to do this is by using the SMART goal format.

Specific: Your goals should be clear, specific, and well-defined. You want a good idea of what you’re trying to accomplish.
Measurable: They should be measurable, like writing 500 words.
Achievable: Goals should be realistic and attainable with available resources, time, and limitations. For example, don’t try to write 2,000 words in a day when you usually write 500.
Relevant: They should be relevant to your current project. If you write 500 words in your diary, that’s great! But it doesn’t help you finish your book.
Timely: Set a time to complete your goal, such as writing 500 words a day for a week.
In this example, your goal could be to write 500 words for your current book in one day.

The objective is to break down your book into manageable sections and set daily or weekly targets. This approach helps keep your writing on track and makes the process less daunting.

2. Create a Dedicated Writing Space

Establish a dedicated writing space that is free from distractions and conducive to concentration. Or consider adding decorations or items that help you focus on your current project. This space should signal to your brain that it’s time to focus, fostering a routine that primes you for productivity.

3. Utilize Writing Blocks

Dedicate specific times of the day to uninterrupted writing. During these blocks, turn off all distractions — social media, email, and phone notifications — and focus solely on writing. Even short bursts of focused writing can significantly advance your progress.

4. Embrace Structured Outlines

Develop a detailed outline before you start writing the bulk of your manuscript. Knowing where your story or content is headed eliminates guesswork and paves a clear path forward, allowing for faster, more decisive writing.

5. Implement Technology Tools

Leverage technology to speed up your writing process. Tools like voice-to-text software can help you capture ideas quickly and easily, while writing software programs can assist in organizing your notes, researching, and formatting your manuscript.

6. Schedule Regular Reviews

Instead of constantly revising what you’ve written, schedule regular review sessions to refine your manuscript. This approach keeps the writing momentum going and prevents you from getting bogged down by perfectionism.

Here are three questions to help review your writing:

Does this section advance the plot or develop the character?
This question helps ensure that every part of your manuscript contributes to the narrative’s progression or depth. It encourages you to consider whether each scene or chapter serves a purpose, whether it’s pushing the plot forward or deepening the reader’s understanding of a character.

Is the language clear and engaging?
This question focuses on the readability and engagement level of your writing. It’s crucial to assess whether the language you’re using is accessible to your intended audience and whether it effectively captures and holds their interest.

What can be trimmed or expanded for better pacing?
Reviewing your work with an eye for pacing can make a significant difference. This question prompts you to look for areas where the story may drag, potentially losing the reader’s interest, or where it moves too quickly, possibly leaving readers confused. It helps in deciding whether to condense or elaborate on certain parts to maintain an engaging rhythm throughout the book.

7. Join Elite Online Publishing

Become part of a community that drives success. Join Elite Online Publishing to gain the support, resources, and accountability you need to stay motivated and productive throughout your writing journey. With Elite Online Publishing, you gain more than just guidance; you gain partners dedicated to helping you succeed. Sign up today and accelerate your journey to becoming a published author.

“The problem was, if they died and the estate tax is triggered now, they owe $0.40 on the dollar for everything over 25 million, roughly right now. So 75 million in net worth at 40%, 28, $29 million tax bill coming due when they passed.” (10:58)

“Now when it comes to property and liability in those areas, you’ve got to be looking heavily every year because with all the natural disasters, hurricanes, wildfires, property rates have gone through the roof, auto claims have gone through the roof.” (15:13)
