Editorial Interview with Tuesday: An Art Project

Tuesday: An Art Project became one of my favorite poetry journals this year. While at the Associated Writing Programs conference in Denver, I met Jennifer Flescher. Flescher edits Tuesday. The original concept thrilled me. Each issue contains a set of postcards, which contain either photographs, prints, or a poem. A colorful piece of paper — similar in weight to construction paper — wraps each set of postcards.

On the plane, I put my tray table down and carefully removed one postcard at a...

A Poetry Editor Dishes…

Deborah Ager talked with 32 Poems editor John Poch about what he looks for in a poem, the process of writing poems, and the places where he's had the most trouble getting his own work published.

DA: In writer bios, we often get lists of awards, books, and other publications. Rarely do I read what inspired a writer to pick up a pen and attempt to write a poem. What do you remember about what compelled you to write? When did you start writing?

JP: Awards mean little, but it feels good to get one ...

Creative Process

During our craft talk at SUNY Fredonia, Ali Stine told students to try something else when they get stuck. If you get stuck writing a poem, take a photo. Go for a walk. Play a song.

What do you do when you get stuck?

Susan Orlean: The Bullfighter Checks Her Makeup

book of articles I rediscovered Susan Orlean's writing and am currently curled up inside one of her sentences. I hope she doesn't mind.

In celebration of National Poetry Month, I am going to write about a literary journalist. (that's a joke)

Having earned her chops in the newspaper world (NOTE: Newspapers are big pieces of paper on which news used to be printed), Susan Orlean engaged this reader from the first sentence of this piece on an up and coming basketball player. Watch me as I misquote:

The white men...

AWP 2010 Recap — Thursday

My big confession about the AWP Conference? I barely attend panels. I'm more interested in talking with friends and meeting people we've published.

The Colorado Convention Center does not believe in hydrating its guests. You will find no water available in the halls — unlike previous AWPs — because this convention center wants you to buy expensive bottles of water from the various cafes inside the hall. And you need water in Denver since it's so dry there.

On the good side, I would be happy to ...

AWP Recap 2010

Upon arrival in Denver, we walked around the neighborhood before heading back to the hotel for the free wine happy hour. The hour did make us happier after being crunched up in economy seats on the plane. Is there such a thing as economy when it comes to buying plane tickets? We arrived at The Magnolia just in time for wine and cookies and pink milk in the Magnolia bar. Pink milk!

The breakfast at the Magnolia included a choice of eggs, sausage, oatmeal, fruit, yogurt, and cereal.

This year...

Free Poetry Books

Karen Maezen Miller and Kelli Russell Agodon gave me the idea to give away TWO books in celebration of National Poetry Month.

It's hard to give away books I like. That's part of the reason I want to do it.

The Skinny on the Free Book Giveaway

I will pack up the book and send it to you at no charge. There will be two winners — one for each book. Leave your name in the comments. I will pick winners at random.

For the "book by someone else part," I am giving away Pablo Neruda's Twenty Love Poems a...
