How is Your Work?
Galleys are partly out for the fall/winter issue. Submissions are piling up. My own writing beckons. I'd really like to ignore everything and eat a cupcake. However, the work calls me. The work of the magazine. The work of writing. The other kinds of work.
I'm ducking Franzenmania and Franzenfreude. I saw a Jason Bieber mentioned on Twitter yet do not know who he is, and I decided I don't want to know. I have friends to call, words to write, and a magazine to make.
How is your work going?

Heavenly Bodies in Georgia
While walking around Decatur before my reading at the Decatur Book Festival, I stumbled upon these interesting pastel-colored bocce balls. "I'll meet you near the bocce balls," said a friend. I stood by and waited and thought the balls against the the gritty sand looked like they were in outer space.

Mary Karr's Top 10 Memoirs
My Confession…
I confess that I'm curious what a poet does about a third book? Is there pressure to find a press who will always publish your work? I confess that I don't know if such a thing is possible.
I confess to liking the start of school even though I'm not a professor. Since enough of my friends teach — 95% of them? — I get excited and energized because they are excited and energized.
I confess to feeling more a part of my daughter's school. Last year, dates and pink flyers and 10 a.m. concert...

Facebook, I'm Leaving You
When I told a friend I'd be off of Facebook from midnight Sept 4 until September 20th, she said that sounded hard. "Good luck," she wrote.
Someone else wrote to ask why I was taking a Facebook fast and asked if it was an experiment.
I would say it's not an experiment. However, being OFF Facebook is an interruption. And, yes, it does seem odd to me to write that being off is odder than being on.
When I do not interrupt my life, I can do the same things in the same way until they become...

Go Somewhere Warm in Winter to Write
This looks like a good writing conference. It takes place at the beautiful and inspiring Atlantic Center for the Arts right near the beach. Being at the beach around writers in the winter sounds pretty good to me.

Confession Tuesday
I confess I'm aiming to get a handle on confession Tuesday.
I confess to amusement with a poet's wife. When her poet husband introduced her to me, she wrinkled her nose, looked off
into the distance, and said, "Deborah…." She wanted me to fill
in my last name. Why would she know me? I am not Mark Strand. I obliged and said my last name. She wrinkled her nose more, looked at me, and gently shook her head. Very odd! Meanwhile, I have no idea of her name. I only have the story.
I confess that I c...
VQR Closes Office; Berlin, LA Bombed with Poetry
VQR closes their office and cancels their winter issue.
"Following the removal of the names of three full-time staff members from the Virginia Quarterly Review masthead, reports suggest that UVA's prized literary journal is on indefinite hiatus, pending an internal investigation. The school's investigation follows the suicide of managing editor Kevin Morrissey and subsequent allegations of "workplace bullying" brought against VQR editor Ted Genoways. The New York Times Arts Beat blog reported ...
