“Delightfully danceable.” – Under The Radar

“set the crowd on fire.” – EDM.com

July 7, 2023 – Los Angeles duo NEIL FRANCES (Jordan Feller and Marc Gilfry) tap up-and-coming LA hip hop artist St. Panther for their second single together, “Let’s Break It Down.” The new track trades the R&B vibes of “Head Straight” for a ’90s-inspired dance-pop anthem written for the LGBTQIA community, with St. Panther adding catchy hooks in addition to the fast flows they are known for.

When asked about the track Marc of NEIL FRANCES explains, "We've found a good amount of solace in the club and on the dance floor over the past few years. This song captures that feeling of being able to let go in an accepting environment. It's a bit old school meets new school production, a bit of classic 90's house. The song is about simultaneously breaking down barriers of identity and breaking it down on the dance floor, in a literal sense."

Jordan adds, "My relationship with my brother and his journey embracing his truest self was a big influence on the lyrics initially. In addition to this, given the origins of house music and it’s lasting importance to the LGBTQIA community, we wanted someone from that community represented on the song. Thankfully, St. Panther was into the concept and blessed us with another flawless feature."

St. Panther continues, "Jordan actually shared a pretty personal meaning behind this track with me, which I appreciated.  I love the notion of this song being about embracing your truest self and feeling free to express your identity exactly as it is. There's something so freeing about that, and you can definitely hear it in the music. Feels more than just a queer-adjacent dance track to make the queers feel ok to be who they are… it feels more like, hey, we all have a piece of ourselves we could show up to embrace more. My favorite way to do that is by just throwing on a record that makes me dance unapologetically. This record is that."

The track is the latest offering from their to-be-announced sophomore album, which the duo has been busy in the studio working on and follows 2022 singles “High” featuring PawPaw Rod and “She’s Just The Type Of Girl” featuring dreamcastmoe. Their North American fall headline tour is on-sale and includes stops at Brooklyn Steel in NYC and The Novo in Los Angeles. They are also confirmed for Lollapalooza (festival + late-night show), Red Rocks (opening for Big Wild in July), and several New Zealand and Australian dates. A full list of dates can be found below.

2022 was a banner year for the group, releasing their debut album, There Is No Neil Frances, performing at over sixteen major festivals, including Life Is Beautiful and ACL, opening for Jungle, and more. The debut featured collaborations with Grae and Benny Sings and their 2021 EP, Stay Strong Play Long, featured collaborations with Poolside and Raffaella and included their cover of "Music Sounds Better With You," which has amassed over 150 million streams.

Stay tuned for more to come from Neil Frances in 2023.

Sarah Mary Chadwick Unveils “Looked Just Like Jesus” Single/Video | LP out 9/15 on Kill Rock Stars

Sarah Mary Chadwick

Unveils “ Looked Just Like Jesus ” Single

Available across platforms here

Messages To God LP Due Out Sept. 15 on Kill Rock Stars

Messages To God pre-order

Singles: “ Shitty Town ” “ Looked Just Like Jesus

"'Shitty Town' is a howling barroom anthem for nihilists and unrepentant fuck-ups" - Pitchfork, track review

"it's as beautiful and heart-rending as you'd expect from a Sarah Mary Chadwick joint." - Exclaim!

"The depth of feeling in the song is only made more powerful via Chadwick’s quavering vocal delivery" - Paste

“ …like the missing link between PJ Harvey and Daniel Johnston” - Rolling Stone

Credit: Sian Stacey

New Zealand born, Melbourne-based Sarah Mary Chadwick will release her eighth studio record Messages to God due out September 15 on Kill Rock Stars and executive produced by award winning producer, Tony Espie (oracle to The Avalanches). Announced to acclaim spanning Pitchfork, PASTE, BrooklynVegan, Exclaim! and more, the new collection is composed of broad, brightly coloured spiritual strokes and consists of dramatic retellings of having your heart broken, existing, movement and growth.

New album cut Looked Just Like Jesus is released today, delicately textured and full of little synth flickers and tremors. Fiercely personal and delivered with a wink, Chadwick shares, "My Mother thought that my first boyfriend looked like an artist's rendition of Jesus that she had hanging on her classroom wall at the Catholic school she taught at. Jesus on the wall had blue eyes and sandy coloured collar length floaty hair, and golden skin. I like to indulge in an idea of God. It gives a name to a feeling of being in love with how beautiful the world is."

Watch / Share “Looked Just Like Jesus” Official Video

Chadwick is a gifted and singular songwriter, uniquely attuned to the minutiae of human emotion, not unlike Phil Eleverum’s work as Mount Eerie and Daniel Johnston’s adventures on tape. A multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Chadwick’s songs are unsparing, brutal, and absolutely lovely. A prolific visual artist alongside her songwriting, Chadwick’s cover art of this record mirrors the slight alteration in tone; whereas previously, self-portraits of herself alone fronted her releases, now she has pictured herself amongst a group around a piano. Still not looking at peace, but surrounded by people, nonetheless.

Messages to God is a beautifully realized record. It’s not happy but it is funny and optimistic. It is melodramatic, self-serving and generous. Sometimes, from way back in the shitty seats of the theater, you’re at your closest to god. That’s what this record is like, finding beauty in everyday occurrences. Because it’s there. You just gotta look really hard sometimes. And as Chadwick provides, “Because every day’s just one more day / trying to write messages to god’’.

The Natvral shares "A Glass Of Laughter" single/video ahead of sophomore LP

The Natvral shares "A Glass Of Laughter" single/video ahead of sophomore LP

Summer of No Light is due Sept. 1 via Dirty Bingo Records

YouTube / Streaming Services

Today The Natvral (Kip Berman, former frontman of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) shares a second single from his new solo album, Summer of No Light, due September 1 on Dirty Bingo Records.

"A Glass of Laughter" captures the allure and limits of a lover who, “could not buy you winter gloves, but always took your hand.”

Berman says of the song: "In love, there are times after the good times— when sweet nothings give way to sour somethings, and what once passed for charming is viewed in a less forgiving light. Noble poverty may reveal itself as mere privation. The impulsive gestures of youth are now recast as irresponsibility."

"But let’s raise a glass, shall we - not to drown these sorrows, but to throw ‘em a lifeline. Heraclitus might’ve been right about the river. But it need not be a meditation on corruption or irretrievable loss. Time changes us, and not always for the worse. What was once can’t be again, or at least not exactly. But maybe it can be something else worth our time, a new good time waiting for us on the other side. Here’s to finding out."

FFO: Neil Young, Silver Jews, Billy Bragg, Ezra Furman

Bio:
“These songs live somewhere between the climate crisis of 1816, the climate crisis of now, and the climate crisis of the heart,” says Kip Berman. “You might say it’s a gothic record—but the house isn’t haunted. The ghosts moved out years ago, but I still get their mail from time to time."

On his second album as The Natvral - a spirited, beautifully observed collection of rough and ready songcraft - the former Pains of Being Pure at Heart frontperson was eyeing the past while dealing with an inescapable present. In 2020, in the early stages of lockdown, Berman began writing songs that reflected on a world that had seemingly ended – while contending with the needs of his young family seeking solace in the familiar. “After putting my children to bed, I spent many a late night in the basement with my guitar and let my mind wander to the places where I could no longer go,” he says. “Initially, a lot of the songs were about getting as far away from the reality of my moment as possible.”

He drew parallels with another tumultuous summer. “The record’s title, Summer of No Light, is taken from the climate crisis of 1816,” he says. Often referred to as The Year Without a Summer, that year a massive volcanic eruption in Indonesia darkened much of the world’s sky. The resulting ash brought dramatic global cooling and widespread famine, hitting Western Europe especially hard.

But it was during the present climate crisis – this one very much of humanity’s design – that he began to think about the people who were holed up during those times while creating their own form of escapist art. “Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was written that same summer,” he says. “Like me, she was among the relatively fortunate who could take shelter,” famously riding out the foul weather in Switzerland on Lake Geneva with her lover Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and Claire Clairmont (Mary’s half-sister and Byron’s paramour) embarking on a ghost story contest (she won), as well as many less cerebral ways to pass the time. “I found the idea of these people sustaining themselves through art, while fucking and getting fucked up, both familiar and foreign.

Faced with the endless rituals and work reproducing some normalcy and joy for two small children (then just 18 months and 4 years) when even the sandbox, slides, and swings were cordoned off with police tape, Berman’s imagination began to stretch out even further in the few moments he had to himself. “Maybe I was embarking on a few ghost stories myself,” he says. “Indulging in a kind of gothic fantasy of tragic loves and lost friends while a more banal specter loomed on milk cartons, suburban playground equipment, and the very breath of conversation.” But Berman is quick to make clear that his labors weren’t solitary or even notable, but in tandem with his partner. “Don’t feel bad for me, my wife pulled long days working from home – and still found time to be present for all of us.”

While he initially sought escape from the isolation in which he found himself, soon the solace of home and family life began to seep its way into the music “The routines of domesticity were often unwelcome, and always exhausting - but probably mentally helpful. I was isolated, but not alone.” Despite the many graveyard romps that populate the record, it’s the moments that celebrate home that gives this album its heart.

For a record written in a time of enormous constraint, Summer of No Light sounds defiantly free. The opening “Lucifer’s Glory” has the kind of punchy, rousing, almost triumphant chorus that Springsteen himself would envy; while “Summer of Hell” charges along infectiously, with its melodic refrain conjuring exultant feelings in stark opposition to a spurned lover who can “write it down for somedays that you know will never come.” For every song about death or absence – that loss isn’t for nought. “Those unwelcome experiences give us the ability to see the shape of what life is more fully.” As he sings on “Lucifer’s Glory,” “It’s the kind of loss you don’t live without.”

Look past the more lurid paeans to tragic figures and lost time, and you’ll find another side of the record that is unabashedly domestic.  “Your Temperate Ways” sings of a lover who is as keen to make the bed as sully it. Even the nod to The Book of the Dead in “Wait for Me” (I’ve got money ‘neath my tongue, if that’s what you require) is as much about what is needed to be loved and accepted in this world as the next. Ditto “A Glass of Laughter,” that captures the allure and limits of a lover who, “could not buy you winter gloves, but always took your hand.” On album closer, “Wintergreen,” Berman’s dialogue between his own history and the present is at its most potent, as he reflects back on the tumultuous early stages of his relationship with his now wife. “When I found you in the snowbank, never wanting to come home – I knew you were the one I’d die with, I think I’d die for you to know.” he sings. “I’m far from a teenage runaway beholden to only my art and pleasure,” he says, once again looping back to Shelley. “And though there are moments where that sounds tempting, this music would not exist if I were.”

The immediacy that radiates from the record is due, in no small part, to the fact that it was recorded mostly live in one week with Berman’s long-time collaborator Andy Savours (Black Country New Road, My Bloody Valentine, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) in London. “I was listening to a bunch of Silver Jews, Neil Young, Karen Dalton, Leonard Cohen, and Ezra Furman – the kind of singers that strained to see into the dimly lit moments of life.” “The way we recorded it felt very much in step with the hope I had when I started this project,” he says. “Which was: I just want to pick up my guitar and sing – whether it’s by myself or with a band, whether it’s for a handful of friends in a basement or something more. Andy, to his credit, never let me deviate from that ideal.”

Summer of No Light is an album that’s born of a precise moment, yet revels in anachronism.
Collapsing time to make a little bit of sense of this one, Berman feels artistically rejuvenated,
drawing on histories large and small to breathe new life and perspective on his own. “It was a time that is now almost unspeakable – not because the tragedy was too profound or in any way trivial – but because we were all there.”

2x GRAMMY® Award–nominated electronic artist Tycho begins a fresh sonic chapter with today’s release of the driving new single, “Time To Run,” available now via Ninja Tune/Mom + Pop Music. A deeply personal official music video, directed by filmmaker Patrick Elmore, premieres today on YouTube.

LISTEN TO “TIME TO RUN”

WATCH "TIME TO RUN" OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO

Powered by glowing pops of synth, a jagged guitar motif (courtesy of longtime Tycho guitarist Zac Brown), and vivid, energetic beats, “Time To Run” sees Tycho mastermind Scott Hansen returning to his signature instrumental approach following a series of vocal experiments including 2019’s GRAMMY® Award-nominated fifth album, WEATHER. The track – which heralds a much-anticipated new project from Tycho – sees Hansen collaborating with Kaelin Ellis on drums, alongside mixing with Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor and teaming with GRAMMY® Award-winner Joe LaPorta (David Bowie, The Weeknd) on mastering duties.

“Music has always served as a kind of meditation for me, long before I started creating it,” says Hansen. “As a competitive runner throughout my early life, I would play back loops of songs in my head to cope with the stress of races, focusing on rhythmic elements to help pace myself and stay calm. There is a unique form of clarity that I have found through the meditative practice of running, it is a fundamentally human experience, and when I feel the deepest connection between the mind, body, and nature. ‘Time To Run’ is my attempt to translate these ideas into music. My goal was to approach the composition from a new angle and let the rhythmic elements take the lead. I cast the melodic elements that have come to define the Tycho sound in a new light by juxtaposing them against a new foundation that takes cues from funk music.”

“Time To Run’ is exactly what I imagined process-wise,” says Zac Brown. “Scott took the initial guitar idea, which was a prettier and subdued vibe, sped it up and gave the guitars a sample-based treatment, which along with adding a staccato synth bass made the track super funky and bouncy.”

“The video for ‘Time To Run’ is autobiographical based around a cross-country meet I ran in,” Hansen adds. “Cross-country races can be a very solitary pursuit; spectators, coaches, and officials are all there at the starting area but once the race begins you disappear into the woods where it’s just you against the other runners, carrying all the of expectations of the outside world. The intense pressure and overwhelming physical stress of the moment can make you want to just keep running and never look back. This story is about letting go of the expectations of others and finding your own peace and fulfillment.

Tycho will celebrate “Time To Run” and more new music to come with a major festival event, Tycho Presents Golden States, set for Saturday, July 15 at Napa, CA’s Oxbow Riverstage. The first-ever destination music festival personally curated by Hansen, the one-day event will see a special set from Tycho featuring classic tracks from their acclaimed discography along with never-before-heard music from their forthcoming album. The all-star lineup further includes Channel Tres, Panda Bear & Sonic Boom, Buscabulla, Washed Out (performing a DJ set), Brijean, and Kaelin Ellis. For complete details and remaining ticket availability, please see tychomusic.com/goldenstates.

“I had so much fun curating events at Brooklyn Mirage in 2021 and in Denver, at Colorfield in 2022 that I wanted to take those concepts further with artists we respect and admire,” says Hansen. “Golden States is the next evolution of that vision and excited to be doing it close to home in the San Francisco Bay Area. Some moments serve as high water marks by which all others are measured. We celebrate these Golden States and seek to recapture them.”

EARMILK

"New York City electronic act MIDNIGHTCHOIR is on the prowl in the streets of Gotham at night, and woo boy…someone has had it with contemporary political discourse and lip-service liberalism. On the fiery new single 'Molotov,' frontman Patrick Bobilin’s brusque baritone cuts directly to the point"
Post-Punk

NYC electronic act MIDNIGHTCHOIR has confirmed the forthcoming release of their second album, Loverboy Molotov, a follow-up to 2016’s THE CROWN, to be released July 14, 2023.

Ahead of the LP drop, today, MIDNIGHTCHOIR shares a brand new track entitled "Into The Abyss," along with an accompanying lyric video created with visuals from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Today, the band also shares a new B-Side cover, a rendition of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus."

The release of "Into The Abyss" follows MIDNIGHTCHOIR's last two releases from their forthcoming album — "Molotov" (with an accompanying music video directed and edited by lead vocalist and songwriter Patrick Bobilin) and "Lovecrimes" (alongside a lyric video), and B-Side covers of Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead" and INXS' "Need You Tonight" (featuring guitar from David Simutis of Err0r C0de).

In the seven years since the release of their debut THE CROWN, Bobilin ran for statewide office, was arrested repeatedly in 2020 protests, and founded a Manhattan mutual aid organization. Bobilin’s love for 80s goth rock and pounding electronic beats combined with his political experiences color the tone and tenor of the 10 songs on the album. The combinations of sex, politics, and gothic imagery explain the lyrical content and the inclusion of three covers (all out now).

“having shared bills with Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney, Big Joanie feels like an honorary member of

an indie world of yore. Yet this chic, politically vibrant U.K. trio’s sophomore album, “Back Home,”

has a contemporary sheen.” - The New Yorker

“buzzsaw guitars and a great vocal delivery” - FADER

“sings about the destructive power of words over dream-pop synths and thrumming guitar” - Rolling Stone

“Big Joanie share the burdens of toxic masculinity and gender imbalances in our society.” - Alternative Press

“‘full of punky riffs and throbbing drums that recall the likes of Bikini Kill and The Raincoats.” - Consequence

Singles: “Today” feat. Kim Deal Happier Still ” “ In My Arms ”

Confident Man ” “ Sainted ” “ Your Words

Black feminist punk band Big Joanie brought their electrifying live show and powerful, community-driven message to stages across Europe and North America this spring. Thrilled to perform their acclaimed new album Back Home, out now on Kill Rock Stars (US), they’ll make stops in NYC and Chicago this week and an appearance at Ohana Festival slated for later this fall. In celebration, they have unleashed a deluxe version of album track “Today” feat. Kim Deal.

Listen / Share: “Today” feat. Kim Deal

Singer and guitarist Stephanie Phillips shares, “We are immensely proud to announce our new version of ‘Today’ featuring Kim Deal. Whether through Pixies, Breeders, or her solo work, Kim has been a vital influence on us as a band and we’re so happy that she’s become part of the Big Joanie world.” She continues, “Originally this was a song we were working on years ago that Chardine was going to sing on. I found the old demo while we were on tour and started writing new lyrics to the music with my laptop balanced on my lap in the tour van. I really love that it sounds like a classic C86 type lo-fi indie song.”

Big Joanie’s new album Back Home earned widespread acclaim spanning The New Yorker, NPR Weekend Edition, FADER, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Afropunk, Stereogum, Consequence, Alternative Press, KEXP, WNYC, The Talkhouse and Under The Radar. It was dubbed “Best Album of 2022” by Rolling Stone, Bandcamp and The Quietus and album track “Sainted” was also highlighted on Andy Bell of Ride’s Top 20 Songs of 2022 list for BrooklynVegan. With their boundary-breaking approach to punk, radical politics, and an appreciation for earworm melodies, Big Joanie are set to become important voices for a new generation of punks.

Big Joanie is:

Stephanie Phillips: singer and guitarist

Estella Adeyeri: bass and backing vocals

Chardine Taylor-Stone: drums and backing vocals

The 1975 Announce Reading and Leeds Festival 2023 Headline Show

[Monday 10th July 2023, London]

The 1975 today announce that they will be headlining the 2023 Reading and Leeds Festival to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their self-titled debut album ‘The 1975’. The band will be performing the album in full, in a rare and special performance, filling in for their friend and scheduled headliner Lewis Capaldi, who had to pull out for personal reasons.

Matty Healy, frontman of The 1975, recently spoke out in support of Capaldi during the band’s biggest headline show to date at London’s Finsbury Park after the singer cancelled all future touring commitments, leaving his headline slots at Reading Festival on Saturday 26th August and Leeds Festival on Sunday 27th August under question. The 1975 confirmed last night on stage at TRNSMT festival in Glasgow, Capaldi’s hometown, that they would be stepping in for their ‘good friend’ at the festivals this summer.

The surprise announcement comes shortly after the band announced details of their biggest North American tour to date, ‘Still … at their very best’ which will see them play arenas across North America and Canada throughout the Fall, including shows at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden and The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

The band’s ‘At Their Very Best’ tour has taken in arenas across USA, Canada, UK & Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia over the last nine months with an impressive 500k+ tickets sold to date. Between the impressive staging, high concept performance art and surprise appearances from friends, the tour has been lauded as a band truly in their prime; a claim backed up by the plethora of five-star reviews from critics.

Released last October, the band’s fifth studio album ‘Being Funny In A Foreign Language’ was met with lavish praise, with The FACE labeling it “an album of massive tunes, pristine production and sincere romanticism” and Rolling Stone vowing the album saw the band “reassert themselves at the forefront of 2020s pop-rock”. It outsold the rest of the Top 5 combined to land the band their fifth Official UK Number 1 album in a row. The band were also crowned ‘Best Rock/Alternative Act’ at the 2023 BRIT Awards.

You can catch The 1975 at Reading Festival on Saturday 26th August 2023 and Leeds Festival on Sunday 27th August 2023. Details of their full touring schedule below.
