AUGUST 27, 2025 [Oakland, CA] -- "My mom would always have the oldies station playing on the car radio when I was young, so I grew up on Oldies. You could say that this is me returning to my roots,” says Wendy Stonehenge, of electro/New Wave-inspired project CANDY WHIPS, about his new covers EP Moonlight which is out now via Kitten Robot. Deconstructing doo wop classics and reinterpreting them in an electro-synth fashion, Wendy arguably creates a whole new entry point of appreciation for these age-old tracks. "For most of these songs, I was recording them as I learned them. I'd go through each instrument and find a way to reinterpret it. Once I had covered everything from the original, I'd go back and add new parts where I felt they were necessary."

Inspired by Silicon Teens, an experimental project by producer and founder of Mute Records Daniel Miller from 1980, which infamously redid Chuck Berry songs into a synthesizer construct, Wendy set out to put his own angular spin on classic and iconic 1950s tracks, keeping the inherent structure of each song intact to keep them recognizable while giving them a fresh, modern edge. "I definitely had the concept in mind before I started," he describes. Featuring the classic singles “Duke of Earl” (originally recorded by Gene Chandler), “Earth Angel” (The Penguins), and “Bad Boy” (Jive Bombers), among others, the EP Moonlight was also inspired by both “the post-punk and new wave bands of the late ‘70s/early ‘80s who in turn were inspired by the music of the ‘50s and early ‘60s."

CANDY WHIPS - Moonlight

"Moonlight is my way of connecting with those roots of yore. Modernizing these songs helps me to be a stronger writer", he explains. Experimenting with vocal effects, drum machines, and synths, Wendy reimagines each song, adding in creative takes that refresh the tracks in a modern light. "My choice of tracks is more of an intentional thing. I’ve noticed that I’m particularly drawn to doo wop and old vocal groups."

On Moonlight, the EP opens up with synth-drenched first single, The Flamingos’ “I Only Have Eyes For You.” From there, Wendy injects a pulsating, mechanized rhythm into Marvin and Johnny's “Cherry Pie,” transforming the swoony dancehop sway into a midnight dancefloor waltz. Adding a blast of bright light to the Chordettes/Pat Ballard's girl group classic "Mr. Sandman," he creates a twinkling lullaby for babies counting electric sheep" and transforms The Cadets “Stranded In The Jungle” as a wacky doo wop song into a propulsive, psychedelic jackhammer dance track, retaining all of the original’s weird tone shifts.

Known as an established member of the well-known Northern California glam rock band Glitter Wizard, Wendy Stonehenge formed Candy Whips as a side project to explore music that didn't fit his other band. Wendy expresses, "I originally created 'Wendy' as the singer of Glitter Wizard but he has followed me into this project. I also released a psychedelic folk album under the same name about twenty years ago so he's seen some action." When live shows ground to a halt during the pandemic, he re-ignited Candy Whips in his home studio and transported Kraftwerk’s roborock to Oakland, fusing the genres punk, electronic, and synthpop. Previously known for creating the critically-hailed gonzo cyberpunk of his 2021’s debut LP Automaton, 2023's hypnotic A.L.T.C.H.B.S., and 2024's angular synth-pop album Artificial Melodies, which was released last year, MOONLIGHT is reinterpretation on classic tracks that are fascinating yet intriguing to the ear.

Exhilarated to finally release the new covers EP, Wendy concludes, "If I could turn young people on to this old music, that would be amazing, it sometimes bums me out that this stuff isn’t as ubiquitous as it was in my childhood. This era is the well that most good music sprung from!"

Candy Whips is the solo project of Wendy Stonehenge. The new covers album Moonlight is out now via Kitten Robot and can be streamed HERE.

Clock DVA Announce Reissue Of Debut Album 'White Souls in Black Suits' & Share "Consent" || Out 11/7 On The Grey Area Of Mute

CLOCK DVA

ANNOUNCE LONG-AWAITED REMASTERED
REISSUE OF THEIR DEBUT

WHITE SOULS IN BLACK SUITS

OUT 11/7 ON THE GREY AREA OF MUTE

LISTEN TO “CONSENT”

Today CLOCK DVA have announced details of a long-awaited remastered reissue of their debut album,  White Souls in Black Suits , available for the first time in 35 years. The album, originally released in 1980 as a limited cassette on Industrial Records, will be released on November 7, 2025 on grey vinyl and CD, via The Grey Area of Mute, expanded with four bonus tracks from the same era. It will also include a booklet that is exclusive to the initial pressing. Additionally, they will embark on a US tour next month, full details below.
Listen to “Consent” HERE.

“We set out to form a new sound combination,” says Clock DVA’s Adi Newton. “To combine acoustics and electronics, merging the German electronic wave with the edge of The Stooges, the avant-garde of the French GRM Musique Concrète, and the pioneering audio-visual creativity of The Velvet Underground. To create a harder form of electronic music with real energy.”

The band, who formed in Sheffield in 1978, quickly proved to do just that. Also inspired by science fiction, Russian constructivism and beat literature, Clock DVA soon created a unique sonic alchemy that for the best part of the last half century has proven to be an endlessly influential reference point across everything from post-punk to EBM via industrial and techno.

This singular audio-visual assault quickly saw people take notice. Fellow Sheffield pioneers Cabaret Voltaire soon became friends and collaborators, as did Throbbing Gristle who released the debut on their imprint, Industrial Records.

The album features a lineup including Newton (voice, synth, clarinet, bowed electric guitar, and tape treatment), founding member Steven James Turner (bass treatment), David J. Hammond (guitar treatment), Charlie Collins (saxophone, flute & percussion), Roger Quail (percussion) and Simon M. Elliott-Kemp (synth). It was recorded at Cabaret Voltaire’s Western Works studio.

“Anti-Chance,” taken from White Souls in Black Suits, was a direct collaboration with Cabaret Voltaire and saw two of Sheffield’s most innovative outfits join forces. “On ‘Anti-Chance’ we used random tapes from both DVA and Cabaret Voltaire,” explains Newton. “It was a direct William Burroughs / Brion Gysin [inspired] audio cut up piece.” Chance is fundamental to change.

Such experimentation can be heard all over their debut album which was, astonishingly, recorded in just a single day. “There is a cultivated myth that it was culled from 16 hours of improvisation but I'd venture the true figure is closer to 8 hours,” says drummer Roger Quail. It’s a record that is dark, eerie and brooding with a tense atmosphere as screeching guitars nestle up alongside toots of sax and electronic sci-fi-like soundscape explorations. It was a sound befitting of a group of people who were hell-bent on exploring new terrain. “Adi used to talk about being kinetic a lot around this time,” recalls Quail. “Keep moving, don't stand still – and I think this restlessness informs much of the music around this time.” And, for Quail, he’s been knocked sideways revisiting the work ahead of its re-release. “I hadn't heard White Souls… since the early 90s,” he says. “I'm blown away by the sound of this new master. There's a bit where we actually appear to invent Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden - to my ears anyway.”

The group built up a fierce reputation as one of Sheffield’s most ferocious live outfits who could melt minds and charge the atmosphere of a room like few others. “We did have a reputation as being wild and unpredictable,” explains Newton. “But that was good because it gave us an edge.” The stage was also a means for the group to explore with their burgeoning visual presence, which has since become a staple part of their identity and is something they are considered as pioneering for as their sonics. “For me it was always a staging, like theatre,” Newton explains. “We have developed visuals throughout the DVA history, from using 8mm film and 35mm film slides in the early days and via the earliest digital computer graphics back in 1987 with the Amiga B2000 to the present day with visual artists we have worked with, along with our own creations.”

Clock DVA are touring the US in September / October 2025.

Today Cigarettes After Sex’s "Apocalypse" has become one of just under 200 songs in history to surpass 2 billion streams on Spotify. In addition, last week three of their other tracks - “Cry,” “Sunsetz,” and “K.” - each surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify all within a stretch of just five days. They also are now one of only 11 bands in history (joining the likes of Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, Queen) to have four or more songs with over one billion streams.

“Apocalypse” is taken from Cigarettes After Sex’s self-titled 2017 debut album, which is certified platinum in the US, gold in the UK, and double platinum in France and Poland. That album is currently the 143rd most-streamed album ever on Spotify. Cigarettes After Sex’s 2019 album ‘Cry’ is gold in the US, France, and Poland. The band also currently have over 30 million monthly Spotify listeners, which places them inside the top 200 most-listened-to artists in the world on the platform.

“Sunsetz” and “K.” are also from their debut, with “Cry” appearing on the album of the same title. Their most recent album ‘X’s’ was released in 2024 via Partisan Records and thrusted the band into becoming more than simply a preeminent indie act, but one of the most globally accomplished acts across any genre, taking center stage as superstars. Behind ‘X’s,’ in 2024 alone Cigarettes After Sex sold upwards of 750k tickets around the globe, including sold out shows at Madison Square Garden, the O2 Arena, the Kia Forum in LA, and arenas across Asia.

The band have done it all without pulling any of the traditional marketing levers - they have never made a music video, maintain a minimal presence on social media, and rarely give interviews. Read about their unexpected and meteoric rise here in this New York Times profile (“Cigarettes After Sex has become one of the biggest cult bands in the world.”) - here

Cigarettes After Sex are Greg Gonzalez (guitar/vocals), Jacob Tomsky (drums), and Randall Miller (bass). ‘X’s’ is the band’s most intimate and emotionally raw project to date, with Gonzalez chronicling the end of a four-year relationship with unflinching honesty. Known for their cinematic slowcore love songs, ‘X’s’ trades their usual collage of relationships for a singular, immersive narrative, written and recorded in the emotional aftermath of heartbreak. Influenced by 70s/80s slow-dance pop and anchored in Gonzalez’s reverb-soaked vocals, the album captures sensuality, nostalgia, and grief with stunning clarity. It’s a document of love’s beauty and collapse, recorded largely in a quiet Los Angeles bedroom and steeped in the haze of late-night wine, soft light, and emotional wreckage. Rosa Anschütz shares “Sun Tavern” video ahead of ‘Sabbatical’ release

Rosa Anschütz shares “Sun Tavern” music video

Her first international release outside of Germany, Sabbatical is out 9/26 via Heartworm Press

Berlin-born artist Rosa Anschütz, known for her spellbinding vocal work in the electronic underground, will release her new album Sabbatical September 26th via Wesley Eisold's (Cold Cave, American Nightmare) Heartworm Press.  Heartworm has previously released books by legendary artists Genesis P'Orridge, Mark Lanegan, Alan Vega and more, and Rosa Anschütz's ambitious 14-track statement compliments the label's catalogue with her haunting minimalism and visionary depth.

Swapping pulsing club beats for a raw, cinematic intimacy, Anschütz channels the spectral beauty of Moon Pix-era Cat Power, the mystique of Nico, and the experimental clarity of Björk and Dead Can Dance. The stripped-back arrangement foregrounds Anschütz’s arresting voice, carrying lyrics that feel both prophetic and personal.  Today, she reveals album single "Sun Tavern."

With Sabbatical, Rosa Anschütz emerges as one of the most compelling avant-garde voices of her generation... an artist unafraid to dismantle genre, geography, or expectation. The album is a bold reinvention and a testament to the patience and precision of a singular creative vision.

Pre-order Sabbatical here and see Rosa Anschütz at a very special in-store appearance at Rough Trade Berlin on September 26.

Influential alternative rock band Failure announce the release of Every Time You Lose Your Mind via Blue-ray Disc featuring over 40 minutes of unseen bonus footage. The Blu-ray disc is available for purchase here: https://www.hellomerch.com/collections/failure

A decade in the making, the feature length documentary was directed by the band’s Ken Andrews, follows Failure from inception to breakup to reformation. Every Time You Lose Your Mind features interviews with David Dastmalchian, Margaret Cho, Hayley Williams, Jason Schwartzman, Steve Albini, Tommy Lee, Maynard James Keenan, Butch Vig, Rick Beato and more. The documentary – which has been featured by the likes of Billboard, Alternative Press, Consequence, Rolling Stone, Associated Press, SPIN, Revolver and more – is also currently available to stream via Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.

The documentary premiered in Los Angeles in June last night and featured a rare acoustic set from the band. See photos from the premiere including appearances from Matt Pinfield, Margaret Cho, David Dastmalchian, Julie Edwards (Deap Vally), Troy Sanders (Mastodon), Paul D'Amour (TOOL), drummer extraordinaire Josh Freese, Failure alumni and Queens of the Stone Age member Troy Van Leeuwen, and more. Failure at Documentary Premiere | (l to r): Kellii Scott, Ken Andrews, Greg Edwards

As otherworldly as Failure may often sound, the Los Angeles band is anchored by the distinctly terrestrial union of a long friendship between three musical allies – Ken Andrews [vocals, guitar, bass, programming], Greg Edwards [vocals, guitar, bass, keys] and Kellii Scott [drums, percussion].

Like a falling satellite blazing across the musical landscape, Failure flamed-out in the late ‘90s – their promising rise derailed by drug addiction and record company inertia. But the pioneering trio left a profound imprint that transcended their affiliation with the LA alt-rock scene. Every Time You Lose Your Mind documents the origins, downfall and rebirth of a band that’s beloved by their peers and multiple generations of fans.

“Our fans have connected with the themes of depression and addiction in our music,” notes Andrews. “The film crystallizes those connections and, ultimately, communicates hope. We’re a band that faced a specific set of challenges and somehow managed to survive and thrive. It's a story about resilience, finding ways to cope, and not giving up.”

WATCH DOCUMENTARY TRAILER HERE

Over the course of six albums, Failure has exerted a similar effect on listeners. Their musical communion has intrigued critics, fans, and peers for nearly three decades. Following Comfort and Magnified, the trio created what is largely considered one of the ‘90s most influential and innovative albums: Fantastic Planet. The 17-track collection not only earned rave reviews and a trove of new fans but saw the band headline Lollapalooza’s second stage and craft one of the era’s most recognizable videos (“Stuck on You”). The album’s legend grew over the ensuing years, eventually spawning retrospective think pieces from the likes of Rolling Stone, Noisey (Vice), Decibel Magazine, and more. Failure has been honored with covers by A Perfect Circle, Paramore, Cave In, Melissa Auf de Maur, and more. After a 17-year hiatus, they returned with The Heart Is a Monster in 2015, inciting the applause of Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, and Stereogum who said upon the album’s release: “this is a pretty big deal.” Their most recent album is 2021’s Wild Type Droid, recorded in the midst of the global pandemic.

Geese shares new single "100 Horses" + 'Getting Killed' out Sep. 26

GEESE SHARE NEW SINGLE “100 HORSES”

GETTING KILLED OUT SEPTEMBER 26

VIA PARTISAN RECORDS

THE GETTING KILLED TOUR LAUNCHES THIS FALL

Geese by Lewis Evans

“100 Horses”

LISTEN: https://geese.lnk.to/100horses

(August 26th, 2025) – New York City’s Geese share new single “100 Horses”. The second – intentional – early offering from the band’s new album follows lead single “Taxes” and the rogue leak of “Trinidad” by Cameron Winter at Newport Folk Festival, which Stereogum described as “violently different” than its predecessor, “in the best possible way.” The band’s new single is the rambling, groovy rock tune that welcomes global collapse with open arms, propelled forward by a steadily chugging rhythm section and muddied guitars that soundtrack Cameron’s absurdist apocalyptic dance party.

Geese’s third studio album, Getting Killed, obliterates any expectations the band has set with their discography to date. After lighting the fuse with the beguiling post-punk experiments of their 2021 debut album Projector and the rollicking cowboy rock record followup of 2023’s 3D Country, Getting Killed examines the wreckage of blowing up those ideas and picking up the pieces to form their own bold and exacting vision. The album was recorded with renowned producer Kenneth Blume in his LA studio over a month-long stretch and what Geese emerged with is a chaotic comedy of epic proportions. Getting Killed balances a disarming new tenderness with an intensified anger, with each member of the band wielding an earned, unshakeable confidence and a hearty disdain of conventional music structures.

In October, Geese will embark on ‘The Getting Killed Tour’, which will see the band headline shows across North America this Fall on the biggest headline run of their career. Launching in Burlington, Vermont, on October 10th and concluding with back-to-back hometown shows at Brooklyn Paramount on November 20th and 21st, most shows are now sold out or second dates have been added. Remaining tickets are available HERE.

The band’s 2023 sophomore album 3D Country has developed into a modern classic, with Rolling Stone calling it “one of the best New York rock albums of the past few years” and Paste calling it the “best rock record made by Zoomers ever.” Geese have played festival sets at Bonnaroo, Governors Ball, Lollapalooza, Dog Days, Pickathon, Newport Folk Festival, ACL and more, and have toured with the likes of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Greta Van Fleet, Spoon, Jack White and Vampire Weekend. Geese first started teasing music from the new album at festival sets earlier this year, whipping up fans into an absolute frenzy on the heels of frontman Cameron Winter’s widely-lauded and mildly befuddling solo debut Heavy Metal. Critically-acclaimed by The New York Times, Pitchfork, i-D, GQ & more, Winter’s idiosyncratic, soul-searching personal journey has led him back to Geese, who have a bold, powerful new record in the chamber with Getting Killed.

Lose yourself in “100 Horses” above, see below for the full run of Getting Killed tour dates and more album info, and prepare yourself for Getting Killed.

Helmed by songwriter Kerry Alexander (guitar/vocals) and Chris Hoge (guitar/bass), Bad Bad Hats’ celebrate the decade milestone of their debut album with the the Psychic Reader (10th Anniversary Edition) vinyl reissue due out this Friday, August 29. They will also release the Psychic Readings digital companion album that day, featuring covers of every song on the original album by Squirrel Flower, The Ophelias, Hippo Campus, The Front Bottoms, Ratboys and more. The new collection has earned acclaim spanning StereogumBrooklynVeganFLOOD Magazine and today they release the final single featuring a lo-fi punk cover of the band’s enduring hit “Midway” by fellow Minneapolis indie-rockers Hippo Campus.

Kerry shares, "Midway” is the enduring “hit” of Psychic Reader, a song that has taken us coast to coast and into the hearts of so many fans. I feel a great sense of pride in this song and I've never tired of playing it live. That said, I did hope when we handed it over to our friends in Hippo Campus that I would receive something that surprised me. And I was not disappointed! Inspired by the real dissolution of my first serious relationship (the ultimate goodbye taking place at Midway airport in Chicago), the original exudes a simmering sadness. Meanwhile, Hippo Campus' excellent cover injects the song with a hectic apprehension. I am grateful for the many lives of "Midway", and may she live forever.”

Listen / Share: Midway (Hippo Campus Version)

Psychic Reader highlights Bad Bad Hats’ cinematic sound, unshakeable pop hooks, punchy rhythm sections and several unexpectedly funky turns. The critically acclaimed debut album was a runaway success that continues to grow in its fandom, with over 21 million streams on Spotify alone! Earning acclaim from fans, critics and fellow artists, the band has hit the road over the years with The BethsHippo Campus, The Front Bottoms, Third Eye Blind, Michelle Branch and more. Fans can experience the band’s captivating live show later this year and join them in celebrating 10 years of their enduring not-so-underground legacy.

San Diego based late-90s/00s band The Black Heart Procession announce their signing to Solid Brass Records today, sharing the first single from the upcoming digital/streaming release of the band's Hearts and Tanks EP on all platforms. Hear and share "Following" on all DSPs HERE.

The Black Heart Procession took root in San Diego in 1997, when Pall Jenkins (vocals, guitars, synths, etc.) and Tobias Nathaniel (piano, guitar, organ, etc.) put their previous band, Three Mile Pilot, on an open-ended hiatus.

In addition to numerous singles, the band has released 8 studio albums for labels like Headhunter, Touch and Go, Konkurrent, and Temporary Residence.

The duo has been joined over the years by a revolving cast of musicians including drummer Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, the Magic Magicians), drummer Zeke Howard (Love As Laughter), bassist Jimmy LaValle (The Album Leaf) and violinist Matt Resovich (The Album Leaf). The band's line-up has expanded and contracted, but at its heart and soul remains Jenkins and Nathaniel, creating timeless, heart-wrenching classics that are adventurous, eclectic, and consistently brilliant.

In July of 2024 the band toured Italy and Greece followed by a full US tour in November of 2024 with Modest Mouse. The band recently announced they would join Modest Mouse on their upcoming Ice Cream Floats cruise from Miami to the Dominican Republic in February 2026 along with Kurt Vile, Tropical Fuck Storm, Portugal. The Man, Mannequin Pussy, Ugly Casanova, and more.

In July of 2025, Solid Brass Records partnered with The Black Heart Procession to begin work on a couple soon-to-be-announced projects. To kick things off, on 9/19/25 the band’s Hearts and Tanks EP will be available on all streaming platforms for the first time ever. Originally tracked in 2003, and released on the UK label Shingle Street, the band locked themselves inside Stereo Disguise Recording Laboratories for 72 hours resulting in this 4 song collection.

Hearts & Tanks will be available on streaming and download on September 19th via Solid Brass Records. Pre-orders are available HERE.
