Rowland S Howard was arguably one of the most influential guitarists Australia has ever produced. He created a sonic language of sharp, brutal intensity previously unheard of, in bands such as The Birthday Party, Crime & The City Solution, and These Immortal Souls. In a career spanning over 30 years, he left an imprint on culture which has inspired, and continues to inspire, artists and musicians across the globe.
Rowland S. Howard started playing in teenage bands in late 70s Melbourne. Whilst still a callow youth, he wrote Shivers, an undisputed classic, (quietly ignoring the fact that Rowland perhaps doesn’t see it that way and approaches the song as if it was written by someone else.) The song was recorded by his band The Boys Next Door, who mutated into the Birthday Party and then relocated to Europe to wage a guerrilla campaign against the trivialities of the 80s, until they turned their fire upon themselves and disintegrated mid-decade.
Whilst his former associates have moved on to weekend color supplement acceptability, Rowland has commonly been perceived as the banished wastrel prince... exiled to a squalid garret on the colder edges of the kingdom, accompanied only by his dreams and inclinations. His demeanor (pale, gaunt, stick thin, sickly, dark humored, fatalistic) has perhaps inadvertently added far too much credence to this interpretation of events. The shadow of this myth has seemingly obscured by the sheer volume of his creativity and the singularity of his musical vision.
Always respected by his peers, a scan through Rowland’s catalogue of work sees him allied with the likes of Lydia Lunch, Thurston Moore, Wim Wenders, Barry Adamson, The Gun Club, Nikki Sudden, the Beasts Of Bourbon, the Hungry Ghosts and HTRK. Rowland’s own ensemble, These Immortal Souls, gun their engines in the ill-lit background and the legacy of his work with The Birthday Party scores the skin of successive generations of musicians and fans.
But it’s a history Rowland would gleefully put a match to. With or without it, Rowland S. Howard would make tense, beautiful music, would deliver us his personal vision of the world, would create Pop Crimes.
Longtime faithful friends Mick Harvey (who played with Rowland for over 30 years), JP Shilo (Hungry Ghosts) and producer Lindsay Gravina make for a formidable backline. Out front, the guitar playing couldn’t be anyone else but Rowland S Howard and his weary, almost journalistic vocal delivery dispassionately sits amidst the sweaty panic of the music, adding to the ill ease.
The band lurch in to Pop Crimes as if dragging a rain soaked body across a muddy field. The ghosts of Lee Hazlewood, Snatch, Sergio Leone, The Shangri-Las and nameless guys from a never known chain gang watch on. Within the first few breaths, Rowland references Stalin, Calvary and genocide, whilst razoring guitar lines the current crop of post-punk revisionists could only fantasize about.
Shut Me Down is Rowland at his most romantic, though inevitably it’s shot through with loss and longing. If only Dusty Springfield were alive to revel in its drama. Talk Talk’s ‘Life’s What You Make It’ is re-imagined as if it had risen from the grind of a Detroit auto plant’s assembly line. ‘(I Know) A Girl Called Johnny’ sees Jonnine D from HTRK sidle up to the microphone for a duet that will melt even the coldest of hearts. It’s a glorious missing link between the New York girl group sound and the street smarts of Suicide. Townes Van Zandt’s ‘Nothin’ is given a chilling tenement building transformation. ‘Wayward Man’ has the band wailing like alarm sirens before Rowland emerges at his most contemplative with the gorgeous, fragile build of ‘Ave Maria’. Final track ‘The Golden Age Of Bloodshed’, takes the album out on a swaggering, swashbuckling epic, with salvation slipping through the narrator’s fingers.
Rowland S. Howard carved a deep scar across the landscape of contemporary music. Elsewhere in the world, such a rogue character would be rewarded with glowing features in glossy music magazines, invited to curate arts festivals, offered their own radio show or feted with tribute albums. In Australia, such a triumph of the spirit, a lifetime spent wilfully unyielding to the middle ground, is not so highly prized and not so publically commended. Sadly we don’t do gravitas. We don’t value those who scratch the polished surface, shine a pale light in to our darker corners, alert us to the fact that we are not without blame or weakness, dare to infer that the very same things that pleasure also corrode.
“Sometimes, Muhammad must come to the mountain.”Rowland S. Howard: October 24th, 1959 – December 30th, 2009

The Empty Hearts debut album out TOMORROW!!

"It's solid and sturdy rock and roll that pays tribute to its influences without sounding trite. A plethora of experience, influence and respect combine to be translated through the expression of original, no frills, good-time tunes." Something Else! August 4, 2014 Santa Monica, CA-- The Empty Hearts, a new band featuring members of The Cars, Blondie, The Romantics and The Chesterfield Kings, signed to 429 Records which will release their eponymous debut album tomorrow in the U.S. and Canada (and in Australia, Europe and Japan, release dates below). The band, consisting of four iconic players and musical peers, features Elliot Easton on lead guitar, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Clem Burke on drums, Wally Palmar on vocals, harmonica and guitar and Andy Babiuk on bass. Co-produced by the band and Ed Stasium, The Empty Hearts is a raucous collection of tunes with each player's rock 'n' roll stripes on display - a bracing sound shaped by influences which span decades and include 50s American roots rock 'n' roll, 60s British invasion and 70s garage-punk. Described by Music Connection as "a well-crafted, highly enjoyable bundle of snap, crackle and pop," the album was recorded at Fab Gear Studios in Rochester, NY and also includes the Faces' Hall of Fame keyboardist Ian McLagan on Hammond organ and Wurlitzer electric piano. The Empty Hearts will be released tomorrow in the U.S. and Canada on 429 Records. 429 Records also released the album in Australia (8/1) and Europe (8/4). The album will be released in Japan on 8/6.
The Empty Hearts (a name coined by Little Steven from his secret list of unused band names), is a band who sound like musical cohorts-all came of age in the 70's and 80's music scenes and play by a DIY punk rock code of ethics. A self-proclaimed band of "rock and roll lifers", the chemistry clicked immediately--they are all connected having come together as a band of friends.

Avi Buffalo: "Memories of You" (from 'At Best Cuckold')

from At Best Cuckold
http://www.stereogum.com/1696273/avi-buffalo-memories-of-you-stereogum-premiere/mp3s/
North American Tour Dates
October 28-November 18thTrack premiere via Stereogum
You can now listen to Avi Buffalo’s "Memories of You," a new offering from his highly-anticipated second album, At Best Cuckold. Stereogum, who premiered the track, had this to say, "It’s a queasy, cluttered, psychedelic track that spirals off into a dizzy solo and makes heavy use of Zahner-Isenberg’s upper range. There’s a bit of Mac DeMarco’s dazed chaos on the song, and a few countrified Beach Boys harmonies, too." (see track premiere August 4th).
Avi Buffalo has scheduled a North American tour in support of At Best Cuckold, which begin October 28th in Denver, CO at Larimer Lounge and currently end November 18th in Boise, ID at Neurolux. Preceding the tour, Avi Buffalo will embark on a week of release jaunt supporting Owen Pallett, beginning September 8th in Seattle, WA at Neumos and ending September 14th in San Diego, CA at the Casbah. Additionally, his previously announced European tour will run from September 23 through October 17th. Please find a complete list of tour dates below.
Avi Buffalo will release At Best Cuckold on CD / LP / DL September 8th in Europe and September 9th in North America via Sub Pop. The album is the long-awaited follow up the the band’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut. At Best Cuckold is now available for preorder from Sub Pop Megamart, iTunes, and Amazon. Vinyl preorders from megamart.subpop.com will receive the limited edition "Loser" LP, and a fold-out poster (while supplies last).
What people are saying about Avi Buffalo:
"...infuses a dreamy 1960s rock sound with youthful ambition, evoking the past with a touch of dread. Nimble guitar solos flower from the mix and forlorn piano lines tug heartstrings while Zahner-Isenberg’s tender, breathy voice describes a world of demure emotions and generational anxieties." - Pitchfork
"So What," the first release off Avi Buffalo's sophomore album At Best Cuckold, soars with low fidelity guitar riffs through cycles of a singsongy chorus. Its well-crafted lyricism elevates the song's downplayed charisma to an admirable and unique stature against this year's alt-pop rockers" - FILTER
"'So What' eradicates four long years of waiting with lead singer Avi Zahner-Isenberg chanting the title in melodic loops as the song builds and builds." - NME "It can't help but seduce." - CLASH "The album’s first reveal, “So What”, lends some satisfying maturity to their sound. While Avi Zahner’s pen as playful and imaginative as their self-titled debut, the band’s easygoing rock and roll tones have been mystified in dreamy reverb similar to Capture Tracks leaders like DIIV and Wild Nothing. This change of pace keeps them far away from “waking up feeling normal"" - Consequence of Sound "Off-kilter pop glory." - DIY “It’s a warm and vibrant track full of Avi’s youthful vocals over some jangly guitar lines that are just plane delightful. “So What” just moves and grooves in all the right ways. It’s perfect for the warm summer weather that has finally arrived and will be promptly put on repeat all week.” - We All Want Someone To Shout For

Pond Announces U.S. Headlining Tour
POND ANNOUNCE U.S. HEADLINING TOUR
"Pond, an Australian rock band, toppled the stateliness of Britpop anthems into psychedelic turbulence, melting down grandiose riffs or pushing them toward screaming tantrums." -New York Times
"From sleazy rock excess, to introspective, cracked psychedelia and back again"
-Fader
"Pond...are very good at nailing tracks with best-of-both worlds approach, fusing those indulgent chunks of far-outness with fundamentally solid rock'n'roll tunes." -Pitchfork
Fresh off a highly successful UK and European tour and festival stops at Primavera, Primavera Porto and Field Day, POND will head to the States for their first ever U.S. headlining tour. "Don't let the name fool you, Pond are a band with hidden depths... Masterfully loose, it's the kind of music jammed on the up of an acid trip and accurately recreated to ensure everyone gets off their faces on guitar," said Line of Best Fit about their sold out London show at Koko in June. "A perfect balance of care-free, good-time rock and twisted psychedelic weirdness," observed The Quietus at Field Day.
Endlessly prolific and hard working, Pond have toured the world over and will now return to the U.S. beginning, October 14th at the Sinclair in Boston, MA and wrapping up the tour at The Echo in Los Angeles on Halloween. Highlights include the Bowery Ballroom in New York, Lincoln Hall in Chicago and The Independent in San Francisco.
Check out footage from their recent performance from Primavera Porto Festival via PitchforkTV here!
Hailing from Perth, Australia the band formed in 2008 after good friends Joseph Ryan (Mink Mussel Creek), Nick Allbrook (Mink Mussel Creek, Allbrook/Avery and former Tame Impala stalwart) and Jay Watson (Tame Impala) hit upon the idea of an all inclusive, ego-free collaborative, the boys immediately recorded their debut albumPsychedelic Mango with a little help from good friend Kevin Parker (the mastermind behind Tame Impala). Member Cam Avery recently left the band to pursue his solo project The Growl and has been replaced on bass by Julien Barbagallo. Barbagallo, Avery and Watson also play in Tame Impala together. Pond's 6th album-Man, It Feels Like Space Again is due to be released later this year. Details coming soon!
