Anna von Hausswolff shares “An Oath” from forthcoming album
Anna von Hausswolff shares “An Oath” from forthcoming albumThe Miraculous out Nov. 13 on Other Music / City Slang / Pomperipossa Anna von Hausswolff - “An Oath": SoundCloud / Stereogum
Photo by Anders NydamAnna von Hausswolff previously released the heavy track “Come Wander With Me / Deliverance” and a gorgeous video for the single “Evocation,” from her forthcoming album, The Miraculous (out Nov. 13). Now, von Hausswolff has shared a new single, “An Oath,” over atStereogum. Anna von Hausswolff will also be playing an album release show at Saint Vitus in NY on Nov. 12 and tickets are now on sale. When Anna von Hausswolff was young, her parents used to tell her stories about a place the family loved to visit. The location is seeped in a complicated history: a home, for example, to Sweden’s traditional folk music, it’s an area of outstanding natural beauty, but once provided the backdrop for a momentous uprising against the country’s king during which thousands of peasants were slaughtered, leaving its landscapes bathed in blood. The tales in which von Hausswolff lost herself - some true, some less so – were on occasions charming, at other times horrifying, but they always lingered long after bedtime. It became, to her, a place of mystery, magic and terror, and, though she won’t say where it is, she still returns repeatedly, if sometimes only in her imagination. She calls the place miraculous. It was here that von Hausswolff’s mind was drawn when, in 2013, following the release of her second album, the extraordinary Ceremony, she was invited to perform at Lincoln Cathedral, in England’s East Midlands. Earlier that year, during a tour with Efterklang, she’d been reading a book by Walter Ljungquist, the uncategorizable 20th century Swedish author. The 20-minute piece she performed on the cathedral organ that October night was inspired by, and named after, it: Källan. It is, she explains, an adventure about, “kids on a spiritual journey, their search for something holy, the disappointment of not finding it, their joy in hunting for it, and the importance of letting go of control.” But the book sent her on a greater journey into her own imagination, taking the Swede – now based in Copenhagen – all the way back to her secret hideaway. She realized that this held the key to the next musical steps she wished to take. As she says of her enigmatic inspiration, "If I were to search for a miracle, just like the kids in the book, then this is the place I would start looking.”Listening to The Miraculous, it’s impossible not to recognize the similarities between the realms that von Hausswolff describes and the music that she’s making, which conjures up an otherworldly vision of darkness and dread, of myth and wonder, of spells, spirits and serenity. Much of this is due to her use of the Acusticum Pipe Organ in Piteå, Northern Sweden, whose colossal sound – with nine thousand pipes, it’s one of the biggest of its kind in the country – swells heroically throughout the album. Inaugurated in 2012, and designed by Gerard Woehl, it lends the record a unique edge, enabling moments of true drama and supplying the brooding drones and dreamy soundscapes that provide the album’s foundations. This magnificent instrument’s unusual features – built-in glockenspiel, vibraphone, celeste and percussion, as well as what von Hausswolff describes as “a screaming bird sound” produced by “pipes half covered in water” (as heard on “The Hope Only Of Empty Men”) – also further broadened the record’s aesthetic. In total, five days were spent recording the majority of the album’s substance live with it and her band, Ulrik Ording (drums), Joel Fabiansson (guitar), Karl Vento (guitar) and Filip Leyman (synthesiser, also the record’s producer). Afterwards, they decamped to Gothenburg for a further month’s work, before mixing it Filip’s studio. The process was a new one: whereas before she’d never revealed her songs to her musicians before they began work, some tracks – like “Discovery” and “Come Wander With Me / Deliverance” – had been developed during live performances, and of the latter’s evolution in particular she says, “every time we played it, it grew bigger and bigger. The lyrics and the feeling of the song seduced me into this mystical yet romantic landscape. It deals with the idealization of a world that you yearn to know, and the fear and frustration that one might never be able to fully exploit that place due to physical and emotional limitations. It’s about longing and dreaming, while facing the reality of obligations and doubt.”That sense of seduction into a parallel universe lies at the heart of The Miraculous’ remarkable energy. The album leads one into a world of haunting, haunted imagery, like a sinister, supernatural take on a gothic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Lyrically full of flickering lights and mirrors on walls, desperate mothers and lost sons, oceans, stars, broken trees and ancient knights – of whom von Hausswolff casually sings, “I’m gonna fuck him for a while” – its monolithic music is equally evocative. The Miraculous floats like a ghost, from the subdued elegance of the title track, and the bewitching “En Ensam Vandrare,” to the unbearably tense, Godspeed You! Black Emperor atmospherics of “Discovery” and the brutal, Swans-meets-Black Sabbath savagery of “Come Wander With Me / Deliverance.” It pauses only occasionally for breath: amid the swirling, smoldering “The Hope Only Of Men,” for instance, or on “An Oath,” whose timeless ambience seems to have been passed down from generation to generation, its character twisted and contorted over the centuries. von Hausswolff’s voice, too, is that of an enchantress. Unearthly, wise beyond her years, she swoops from whispered incantations to ghastly shrieks, as though presiding over a black mass where – accompanied by Gyorgy Ligeti and Jan Welmers – Fairport Convention, Jefferson Airplane, Vashti Bunyan and Diamanda Galas have gathered to raise the decaying corpses of Sunn O))). If Ceremony offered a reflection of a world both unsettling and enthralling, The Miraculous steps through the looking glass into another dimension.von Hausswolff, however, prefers to compare the record to her belovedCome And See, a 1985 film by Elem Klimov whose depiction of the Nazi occupation of Soviet Russia is both eloquent and harrowing. “Nature is so beautifully and mysteriously portrayed in it,” she elaborates, “and makes such an extreme contrast to the dark story of that place. I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and wonder how history has changed and twisted our perception of that gorgeous countryside. One could probably never visit and see only nature. There’d be layers and layers of images and words from the war.”It’s an astute comparison: equally disturbing and complex, The Miraculousmaintains von Hausswolff’s uncompromising approach to her art, adding to the young Swede’s already exceptional catalogue of work. Of its potential commercial impact, she remains unperturbed. “I can´t afford to care about the market´s approval. I would lose too much artistic energy, and that would only ruin me. As Lars Norén once said of his work as a writer, ‘The market is the most lethal of all poisons.’” Courageously ransacking a multitude of musical approaches – “It seems like everything I do is both a little bit in and out of fashion,” she grins quietly – The Miraculous is single-minded and radical, unflinching in its quest to reveal a world as ugly as it is beautiful. It’s a place everyone should explore, secure in the knowledge that the experience will affect them deeply, and remain with them inexplicably, indefinitely. Only Anna von Hausswolff, however, knows how to take them there. Therein lies another miracle.Tour Dates:11/12 - NEW YORK (US) - Saint Vitus

Documentary WELCOME TO LEITH Opens Next Week in LA

Leith, North Dakota, is a ghost town with 24 residents. Its inhabitants are mostly farmers or ranchers, working land passed down from generation to generation. In 2012, an outsider named Craig Cobb moved in and started buying up property. He accumulated twelve plots of land, some empty, some with houses in various states of disrepair. People assumed he'd moved in to be close to the Bakken oil fields some 70 miles north. It turns out he is also a notorious white supremacist who was plotting a takeover of the city government in Leith. Shortly after his plans were unveiled by the Southern Poverty Law Center, a family of fellow white supremacists moved in to join his efforts.
As Cobb's behavior became more threatening, tensions soared, and the residents desperately looked for ways to expel their unwanted neighbor. With incredible access to both long time residents of Leith and white supremacists, the film examines a small community in the plains struggling for sovereignty against an extremist vision. That it takes place in the shadow of the biggest oil boom in North Dakota's history makes the film a complex document exploring unforeseen causes and effects. “Feeling more like a taut Hollywood thriller than a documentary... Grippingly depicting the ensuing tensions that constantly threaten to emerge into violence-- even while raising discomfiting questions about the scope of First Amendment rights-- the film is a nail-biter from start to finish."
- The Hollywood Reporter
"Fascinating, unnerving. The interviews are rich and disturbing." - The Village Voice
"Surprising and fascinating." - Salon
"A gripping you-are-there portrait of a community under siege...as engrossing as a fictional thriller."
- Variety
“For its eerie sense of timeliness and excellent storytelling, 'Welcome to Leith' is one of the must-watch documentaries of 2015." - Paste Magazine

On the heels of this summer's self-titled debut EP via Burger Records and this fall's limited edition 7" via SuperFan 99 in the UK, Pearl Charles is back today to share a video for new song "Mind's A Mystery." A bonus track taken from the expanded version of her self-titled EP that Kanine will release on Record Store Day, "Mind's A Mystery" comes just as Pearl prepares to kick off a fall West Coast tour tomorrow.
Speaking about the song and its video, Pearl said, "Mind's A Mystery is a song about trying penetrate beyond the external facade and break down barriers in order to navigate the rabbit hole that is the inside of another's mind and thought process. Directors Melodi Meadows & Asher Moss and I wanted to pair this song with a visual that emphasized the alluring intoxication of this pursuit and chose the desert in Joshua Tree to create our version of a mirage, a psychedelic dreamscape atmosphere that reflects both beautiful illusion as well as hazy confusion."

Fat White Family's Lias Saoudi and Saul Adamczewski, along with Sheffield's electronic audio taxidermists and practical hauntologists, the 'Eccentronic Research Council', are the psychedelic Ouija Pop project, The Moonlandingz. What started out as a fictional band created for the Eccentronic Research Council's new critically acclaimed concept album '
Johnny Rocket, Narcissist & Music Machine..I'm your biggest fan!
' Has taken on a life of its own. The ERC and The Moonlandingz brainchild, Adrian Flanagan, explains: "The latest ERC album is an electronic spoken word concept album featuring BAFTA winning actressMaxine Peake (The Falling,The Theory of Everything), who plays a stalker obsessed by the lead singer of a (fictional) band called The Moonlandingz. I thought to flesh the album out, it would be cool to create an actual band around the narrative, so I called up Saul and Lias from the Fat White Family, who I had hit it off with a few months earlier, at a now legendary Fat Whites show in Sheffield. I asked them if they wanted to be in my fictional band and they were up for it. They came up to Sheffield and we wrote an EP's worth of songs at ERC member,Dean Honer's (The All Seeing I) studio. One song of which, 'Sweet Saturn Mine' totally blew up on the radio - BBC 6 Music were playing it daily in the UK for a couple of months - and so this fictional band took on a life of its own, getting actual (non) fictional fans of their own..."

Glassnote Artist Oberhofer Releases NEW Video! NEW Album OUT NOW!
OBERHOFERRELEASES VIDEO FOR “MEMORY REMAINS"PREMIERED VIA NOISEY – WATCH HERE

NEW ALBUM CHRONOVISION OUT NOW – LISTEN HERE “It’s a big, bold gesture that makes for a grand reintroduction." – Stereogum “Brad Oberhofer is back.” – Consequence of Sound “…thoroughly endearing” – The Line of Best Fit Chronovision features his signature amped psych-pop with orchestral flourish, New Wave flare, and grungy fuzz, but multiplied with his intensity that only time and life's gut checks can enhance. The road to Chronovision was winding, owing to Oberhofer's resolve to produce the LP himself and initially taking him from the Catskills to Seattle and back. A final spurt brought him to a studio in his hometown of Tacoma, two NYC facilities (Strange Weather, Electric Lady), and the former Sound City in Los Angeles. Lastly: Atlanta to mix with Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Washed Out). Exactly 106 demos later, Oberhofer emerged with these 12 songs. The Album Leaf unveil 'New Soul'
The Album Leaf ‘New Soul’ video streaming now· Festival show announced at All Tomorrow’s Parties
AUDIO: "New Soul" / YouTube
The Album Leaf never went away, but Jimmy LaValle's ambient, electronically laced project is certainly back. Having recently completed the follow up to 2010’s A Chorus of Storytellers on Sub Pop Records, the new album set for release in 2016 marks another shift in the evolution of the project's sound. Marked by warm, electronically laced full band instrumentation and notable vocal work, the new single "New Soul" is an early glimpse into the world of the new album.“I wanted to experiment with my vocals,” LaVelle says about the song. “I’ve never been fully comfortable with the inconsistencies of my voice. I’m not a singer, I just choose to sing sometimes. I wanted to keep the honesty and not think about it too much. Lyrically, the song is about moving forward, getting out of your comfort zone.”The video for “New Soul” was directed by Michael Raines, who has previously worked with the band on the 2014 tour documentary “Beyond There”, and the award winning cinematographer is Mike Simpson (who has made videos for Alt-J, Lil' Wayne, Solange and David Byrne). “We had little resources,” LaValle explains, “So we spent a weekend in Joshua Tree desert with friends and family contributing to the making of this video and I’m amazed with the result.” Raines elaborates: “We never had a conversation about the song’s meaning or intentions, and Jimmy gave me a great deal of freedom when it came to creating the concept. Listening to “New Soul”, I looked to the films of Larisa Sheptiko, American Westerns, and more specifically, a scene from Béla Tarr’s Satantango (which I blatantly ripped off). My hope was to make something that alluded to a larger narrative, as if the video was a slice of a feature film. I wanted to make something that felt expansive, like the song itself, but ultimately let the viewer decide who this women was and whether it was a story about death, rebirth, or both.”In addition to recent appearances at the Los Angeles Culture Collide festival and appearances at CMJ Festival, The Album Leaf will be playing All Tomorrow's Parties curated by Jake and Dinos Chapman in late November, where the classic 2004 LP In a Safe Place will be performed in its entirety. The Album Leaf started as the solo project of Jimmy LaValle, a San Diego-born, Los Angeles-based songwriter who began recording material one year after forming the instrumental post-rock band Tristeza. Inspired by a number of genres — electronic, ambient, traditional latin and '70s psych-rock among them — LaValle constructed his own songs in a similarly eclectic manner, utilizing everything from ambient noise to field recordings and samples. An Orchestrated Rise to Fall introduced the resulting sound in 1999. LaValle's second full-length album, One Day I'll Be on Time, was released by Tiger Style in March 2001. The Album Leaf's profile blossomed as a result of those recordings, and LaValle found himself opening shows for Sigur Ros around the world. By the time he began recording his third album, he'd also secured the services of Sigur Ros and their Icelandic studio. The resulting album, In a Safe Place, appeared on Sub Pop in June 2004.
LaValle's next album, Into the Blue Again, followed in September 2006. The Album Leaf then toured extensively throughout the remainder of the decade, performing in multiple continents and with appearances at the Hollywood Bowl, Red Rocks Amphitheater, ATP’s I’ll Be Your Mirror Festival, Primavera Festival and the Metamorphose Festival in Japan. Since 2010, LaValle has scored five documentaries and films having released soundtracks for Torey’s Distraction, Before You Know It andSpring. 2012 saw the release of an EP, Forward/Return, which represented a shift in the bands sound and line-up.

The Arcs vs The Inventors Vol I (featuring Dan Auerbach, Dr John and David Hidalgo) coming Black Friday
THE ARCS VS. THE INVENTORS VOL. I
FEATURING DR. JOHN AND DAVID HIDALGO
TO BE RELEASED ON BLACK FRIDAY
“Yours, Dreamily, takes what Auerbach does at his best, in and out of the Keys—confessional, texturally enriched blues propelled with garage-rock force—and adds a riveting jump in eccentricity.”—Rolling Stone, ★★★★
A new limited-edition 10” six-song recording by The Arcs, entitled The Arcs vs. The Inventors Vol. I , featuring Dr. John and David Hidalgo, will be released on Nonesuch Records November 27, 2015, as part of Record Store Day’s Black Friday event; a digital version of The Arcs vs. The Inventors Vol. I will be available December 11.
The disc is the first in a series of collaborative “Inventors” recordings to be released by The Arcs. The band’s Dan Auerbach says of the project, “Sometimes the best way to see into the future is to study the past. In this series we do both, collaborating with folks who have been in the game a long time but instead of rehashing old material, we collaborate on new works, explore new ideas and introduce each other to a different generational perspective. We'll continue in this series to track down our heroes and bug them until they agree to make some noise with us. Hopefully we learn a thing or two. Yours, Dreamily,”
The Black Friday release follows The Arcs’ debut album, Yours, Dreamily , which was recently released to critical acclaim (purchase now from your favorite record store, thearcs.com, andnonesuch.com).
