Violent Femmes return with first new album in more than 15 years
VIOLENT FEMMES CAN DO ANYTHING
LEGENDARY AMERICAN BAND RETURNSWITH FIRST NEW ALBUM IN MORE THAN 15 YEARS 10-TRACK COLLECTION INCLUDES NEW CLASSICS LIKE "MEMORY" AND "ISSUES" EPIC WORLD TOUR TO BE ANNOUNCED WE CAN DO ANYTHING ARRIVES AT LAST ON FRIDAY, MARCH 4TH
(New York, NY) - Violent Femmes have announced details of their eagerly awaited new LP.
WE CAN DO ANYTHING
arrives via [PIAS] on Friday, March 4th. Violent Femmes' ninth studio album and first full-length collection in more than 15 years,
WE CAN DO ANYTHING
is among the most provocative and playful in the legendary trio's remarkable canon. As the album's title makes plain, the band - singer/songwriter/guitarist Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie, and drummer Brian Viglione - remains as intrepid and fearless as ever before, traversing genre and emotion via their immediately identifiable, still utterly idiosyncratic, mash of rambunctious folk, minimalist punk, cubist blues, cosmic jazz, and backwoods rock 'n' roll. Produced by Jeff Hamilton - a longtime member of the Horns of Dilemma, Violent Femmes' ever-evolving cabal of multi-instrumentalist backing musicians - and mixed by the legendary John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile, Dinosaur, Jr.),
WE CAN DO ANYTHING
was recorded in studios in Brooklyn, Nashville, Los Angeles, Milwaukee and Denver, while on tour during the summer of 2015. The album's cover image was drawn by Barenaked Ladies' Kevin Hearn, who also contributed accordion, guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals on several recordings. Rounding out the live touring band and members of The Horns of Dilemma are John Sparrow and Blaise Garza who has been playing with the band since he was 14 years old. Gano gathered the album's material by diving headlong into his own voluminous archives, listening to ancient cassette demos and leafing through old journals in search of suitable songs. Among his finds were such new classics as the murderous "Big Car" and the fractured fairy tale, "I Could Be Anything," Of the album's more recent songs, "Foothills" and "Holy Ghost" were both penned with the team of Sam Hollander and Dave Katz (Train, Joe Cocker), while "Issues" - co-written by Gano with Hollander and Better Than Ezra's Kevin Griffin (Christina Perri, Howie Day) - stands out as vintage Violent Femmes, as lyrically cutting as it is musically kinetic. Penned by Gano's big sister, gifted folk singer/songwriter/artist Cynthia Gayneau, "What You Really Mean," the album's sole cover, might as well be an original composition, hewing remarkably close to the frontman's own sonic sensibility and lyrical heart. Colored by explosive arrangements that veer on a dime from hard charging stomp to intimate melancholy, WE CAN DO ANYTHING is Violent Femmes at their very finest - joyous, exciting, and eternal. Violent Femmes will celebrate WE CAN DO ANYTHING with a full-scale North American headline tour. Complete details will be unveiled soon - for up to the minute news and information, please seewww.vfemmes.com/tour. WE CAN DO ANYTHING arrives hot on the heels of Violent Femmes' acclaimed 2015 EP, HAPPY NEW YEAR. Recorded in Ritchie's adopted home of Hobart, Tasmania as the band prepared for a sold out New Year's Eve 2014 concert at the world famous Sydney Opera House, the EP is highlighted by "Love Love Love Love Love" and "Good For/At Nothing" both of which are accompanied by animated companion videos streaming now at the band's official YouTube channel. HAPPY NEW YEAR is available now on the iTunes Store and other online retailers. One of the most beloved bands of the golden age of indie rock, Violent Femmes returned to action in 2013 with an acclaimed performance at Coachella, their first live appearance in several years. Drummer Brian Viglione (The Dresden Dolls, Nine Inch Nails) came aboard in 2013. The Violent Femmes embarked on a wide-ranging tour that included headline dates and ecstatically received festival sets around the world. The Guardian applauded their London show as "a triumphant rampage through their back catalogue," declaring the band's self-titled 1983 debut to be "a cult classic of teenage alienation - a sneerier, post-pubescent Catcher in the Rye, if you like, with added nocturnal emissions and rattling acoustic bass solos." Violent Femmes came together in 1981 and were quickly ranked among the era's most inventive and original, constantly pushing forward with their singular blend of folk and punk, sarcasm and spirituality. The trio released eight studio albums and more than a dozen singles, among them such iconic classics as "American Music," "Gone Daddy Gone," "Nightmares, "Add It Up," "Kiss Off" and of course, "Blister In The Sun." Violent Femmes' remarkable three-decade career earned them cumulative sales in excess of 10 million worldwide, with 1983's VIOLENT FEMMES earning RIAA platinum certification eight years after its initial release. With the turn of the millennium, Violent Femmes began a long hiatus from the studio, only coming together in 2009 to record a cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy," returning the favor after the psychedelic soul duo's cover of "Gone Daddy Gone" proved a worldwide smash. BARONESS RELEASE PURPLE TOMORROW; FULL ALBUM STREAMING NOW
EXTENSIVE EUROPEAN TOUR ANNOUNCED
UNRELEASED ALBUM ON MULTIPLE YEAR END LISTS INCLUDINGROLLING STONE, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, DECIBEL &STEREOGUM
“These are some of the biggest, strongest songs Baroness have written…” – 8.5, Pitchfork
“Baroness have delivered their masterpiece…” – 4*, Mojo

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 17, 2015 – Baroness’ highly-anticipated new album,Purple (Abraxan Hymns), which will be released tomorrow, is streaming now via a variety of partners as part of a fan-fueled #FindPurple promotion:
“Morningstar” via Kerrang
“Shock Me” via YourBaroness.com
“Try To Disappear” via Stereogum
“Kerosene” via Nerdist
“Fugue” via Juxtapoz
“Chlorine & Wine” via Brave Words
“The Iron Bell” via Noisey
“Desperation Burns” via Metal Injection
“If I Have To Wake Up (Would You Stop the Rain)” via Drowned In Sound
“Crossroads of Infinity” via Rolling Stone Australia
Marald van Haasteren, a Dutch-based visual artist, created the accompanying videos for the song premieres, as well as the internal drawings for Purple.
Purple has been universally praised in the lead-up to its release with Pitchforksaying the album features “some of the biggest, strong songs Baroness has ever written,” Rolling Stone Australia dubbing it “the most dynamic, robust guitar album this year,” Mojo echoing those sentiments, saying “Baroness have delivered their masterpiece: an album grounding their cosmic heaviosity with earthbound, compelling drama,” and German magazine Visions declaring “the quasi-comeback Purple is their best album to date.” The album has already landed on a number of year-end best of lists including Rolling Stone,Entertainment Weekly, Decibel and Stereogum.
“After releasing a lengthy and investigative record like Yellow & Green we all felt that we needed to make something much more direct and immediate,” explains band founder and singer/guitar player John Baizley of the approach behindPurple. “We wanted to write with our normal focus on artistry, balanced against an increased level of energy and focus. It was important for us to write our new songs with the type of enthusiasm and expressiveness that could act as a counterpoint to the album’s dark themes. As a result, the music came out in an intense, heavy and sonically captivating in a new way, which was important, loathe, as we are to fall into any kind of complacency pitfall or formulaic songwriting routine. Purple is the most fully realized representation of our intention as a band; considering the amount of physical and mental energy spent writing it, we have accomplished something which would have seemed impossible to us a couple of years ago.”
The band recorded the ten-song album with producer Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT) at the helm, whom Baizley said “He’s been on the top of my list since day one. I never thought he’d work with us. I absolutely worship his recordings.” Purple also marked the first time Baizley and Pete Adams (guitar, vocals) recorded with their 2013 recruited rhythm section of Nick Jost (bass) and Sebastian Thomson (drums), something the foursome discussed in the behind-the-scenes clip “Fifty Percent” (https://youtu.be/MXHUkOQh2_g). “I don’t think it’s too often you can replace two people in your band like that and have it work out just right off the bat, like clockwork,” said Adams of Jost and Thomson. That clip is one of ten videos the band has shared in recent months, documenting the making of Purple both with footage but also candid interviews with the band members (www.youtube.com/baronessmusic).

“Williams is truly a master of Wagnerian-bombast and baroque composition, and when “Duel Of The Fates” kicks in, the Star Wars faithful can just sit there, listening and wishing that the theme was from a much better movie. The vinyl mastering on the release is also very good, and retains that certain warmth that you can’t get from the digital releases.” - A.V. Club
Recorded at Abbey Road studios over the course of a week, starting on February 10, 1999, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars score Williams had composed in over 16 years. The scores of the following two films in the prequel trilogy would rely heavily upon tracking from this score, a decision that Williams and George Lucas had made early into production of the film. The original album was released on CD to accompany the film (May 4, 1999), and was certified Platinum in the U.S. and Gold in the UK.
The limited edition vinyl release of Star Wars soundtracks marks I Am Shark’s emerging role as an independent label for Film, TV, and Video Game soundtracks. Future soundtracks from iconic pop culture and beloved indie releases will be announced in the coming months.

James Franco said about "You Are Mine": "High school is a time of longing for the unattainable. We dream big, but we're still too young to make anything significant happen. At least I was too immature and sensitive to be the person I wanted to be. "You are mine" is about one teenager dreaming about another, even though they'll never be together,"and Tim O'Keefe added "Transforming James' poems to songs took on it's own creative process which was a new direction for me. Because the words weren't written by me, I had to take on the character of the individual whose perspective I was singing from. You Are Mine like many of the songs on Let Me Get What I Want expresses experiences that were relatable to my own high school experience, and therefore I had a lot of my own emotions to pull from."James recently published a book of poetry called Directing Herbert White: Poems. Two sections in that book are called “Poems Inspired by Smiths’ Songs” and are a series of poems loosely based on people James knew at Palo Alto High School; each poem sharing the title of The Smiths’ song that inspired it. James and Tim discussed the poems and their love of the Smiths. They soon decided to use these poems to create the new songs for their album. James discussed the process in his VICE column HERE.The accompanying film can be viewed as an hour-long film, or as individual music videos for all of the album’s songs. The film has no "beginning" or "end" point, it works like a loop (i.e. the "last" video, or video 10, connects to the first video, video 1, seamlessly). The film stars Palo Alto High School students, and edited in a Lynchian style reminiscent of Twin Peaks.
Last November, the first track “On The Sideline” (fka “This Charming Man”) from the album/film was revealed via VICE HERE. The Let Me Get What I Want album and film will exist as installation exhibitions in 2016.
