FRØKEDAL: Reveals New Video 'Kid' (Dir. Vibeke Heide)

FRØKEDAL REVEALS PARTNERING VIDEO FOR SINGLE ‘KID’
TAKEN FROM DEBUT LP  ‘HOLD ON DREAMER’  –   RELEASED FEBRUARY 26
“There's a tranquillity to Frøkedal's latest offering that belies the lyrical gravitas, and the result is a track that's haunting and beautiful in equal measure.” – The Line Of Best Fit

"A thoughtful and hypnotic track with a meditative melody that quickly
draws in and doesn’t let you go." – 1883 Magazine

_ _ Teaming up once again with director Vibeke Heide, Frøkedal reveals new video for single ‘Kid’ . There’s an eerie, almost unnerving, quality to the pair’s collective output and the latest instalment proves no exception. Watch/embed Kid’ below...

The video follows news of Frøkedal’s upcoming European tour in support of debut LP ‘Hold On Dreamer’  – released February 26, 2016. Joined by her band Familien (or ‘The Family’), Frøkedal kicks off proceedings at London’s The Islington on February 25 before embarking a string of live dates through greater UK and Germany; also joining the bill at Norway’s renowned Øya Festival.

Kid  opens with a depiction of a young child who falls asleep under the table during a family party,” explains singer/songwriter Anne Lise Frøkedal. It all seems conventional enough, before the track takes a somewhat poignant turn: “It turns out that this is only a made-up memory because all the photos of the child have disappeared along with the family's recollection of him”.

“I remember you, kid” forms a fitting refrain, and a comforting assurance that resonates throughout new album  ‘Hold On Dreamer’ . Lyrically, a theme runs across its ten tracks: “They deal with people whose lives are about to take a turn – for better or worse,”Frøkedal says. “For me, writing about change is much more interesting than exploring situations that already work. Most are real stories, about real people, some influenced by my own life more than others.”
‘Kid’  is out now – taken from Frøkedal’s forthcoming debut LP ‘Hold On Dreamer’, released February 26 2016 via Propeller Recordings.

PRAISE FOR FRØKEDAL:

“…think Fleetwood Mac getting on pretty well with Joni Mitchell.”
– BBC Radio 6music, Lauren Laverne

“Frøkedal’s vocals are mournful but not desolate, wistful but never twee.
Most importantly, her melody is crafted with meditative warmth - its gentleness
makes it endlessly listenable.”
– The Line Of Best Fit, Song of the Day

“The carefully picked out melodies of the Norwegian songstress are
matched to an icy cool touch, a sense of glamorous introversion...
a potent introduction to something quite special.”
– CLASH

"Its meditative melody will have you hooked from the
off... we can’t get enough."
– Notion Magazine

“Frøkedal's rich, breathy voice demands every drop of
your attention."
– Indie Shuffle

“…kinetic, off-kilter pop” – The 405

“The latest musical incarnation of Oslo performer Anne Lise Frøkedal is one which
embraces space and simplicity, a project which creates a welcoming setting where collaboration and glistening folk-pop are the name of the game."
– Ja Ja Ja

“It’s like Joni Mitchell and the Mamas and the Papas had a love
child and named it Frøkedal.”
– Vulture Magazine

Gem Club shares wintry new "Speech of Foxes" video

WATCH AN ELEGIAC NEW VIDEO FOR GEM CLUB'S "SPEECH OF FOXES"

VIDEO - "Speech of Foxes[dir. Ben Phillippo]
VIDEO - "Braid" [dir. Christian Palmer]

Happy Holidays from Hardly Art! We're closing out a banner year with a stunning new music video from Boston-based artist Gem Club. "Speech of Foxes," as brought to life by director Ben Phillippo, is a gorgeous, snowbound meditation on memory, loss, and impermanence. Magnet Magazine premiered the video, with you can watch here or by clicking the .gif above.

About the record:

There are times when beauty and sadness are inextricably linked.  Massachusetts-based Gem Club understands this fragile symmetry.  The band—singer/pianist Christopher Barnes and his collaborators, cellist Kristen Drymala and vocalist Ieva Berberian—create music that is intimate, graceful, and filled with melancholy.

Breakers, their 2011 debut, paired plaintive piano melodies with impressionistic lyrics. Made primarily in Barnes’s bedroom, the album displayed how music, even at its most minimal and hushed, could be cathartic, even transcendent.

For the new In Roses,  arriving January 2014 from Hardly Art, Gem Club have ventured beyond the isolation of the bedroom to record in San Francisco at John Vanderslice’s analog studio Tiny Telephone, choosing to record entirely to tape. Barnes worked closely with arranger and conductor Minna Choi of The Magik*Magik Orchestra, who, Barnes says, “helped reshape the new songs in fresh and unimagined ways,”  The resulting album is more expansive, more majestic, than prior Gem Club releases.  There are spacious, grand flourishes—the church-choir voices on “Idea for Strings”; the reverberating drumbeats that propel the melody of “Braid”—yet the music retains the intimacy of previous works.

Barnes is quick to note that In Roses takes a different approach to the landscapes of his world than before. “Whereas Breakers was more about the body and inward-gazing, the new album is about me looking out, relationships I’ve had or wish I've had.”  Many lyrics address “the crashing realization that lives are no longer happening the way we want.”  Other songs are elegies for those Barnes has idolized or loved, but has lost: “Soft Season” is inspired by the life and death of early-'90s gay adult film actor Joey Stefano (“I’m a boy on my back,” Barnes sings, “and I’m more of a man”); the harrowing closer “Polly” is a song he wrote about his relationship with his late aunt.

Beauty and Sadness is the title of a 1964 novel by the late Japanese writer Yasunari Kawabata, but the name could also serve to describe the music of Gem Club.  During one scene of the book, Kawabata writes, “He heard a sound that only a magnificent old bell could produce, a sound that seemed to roar forth with all the latent power of a distant world.”  With In Roses, the beautiful and sad sounds of Gem Club come roaring forth with increasing power.
