David Peak's review of Falcons on the Floor

"It really is refreshing to see such an ambitious, meticulous novel come out of the small-press scene. What Sirois has done here cannot have been easy. Even beyond the huge scope of the story, or the well-drawn, believable depth of the characters, the multiple points of view, the geographical and historical accuracy. Just looking at this book on the sentence level, it could not have been easy to write. It's jam-packed with air-tight sentences, creative word choices and frequently surprising d...

idea for indie book stores to make money off eBooks

Why isn't there a resource for indie book stores (brick and mortar stores) to feature eBooks so they can get a % of the sale? It would be so easy to set up an interface where Smashwords splits the profits according to settings the author dictates. As an author, 25% seem reasonable to me.

Does this exist already?
Readers still trust indie book stores are curators of culture. They should be rewarded for their efforts. This could also work for book reviewers. Give them a pie of th...

CNN? Really? A C183 is a "firearm"?

From the report:Investigators found more than 1,600 rounds of ammunition in the house, and a holiday card with a check "made out to Adam Lanza for the purchase of a C183 (firearm), authored by Nancy Lanza," according to a search warrant.

Last time I checked, a C183 was a camera. It took about... THREE seconds to Google. What kind of mother gives their son a holiday gift of a firearm? This is either completely n...

So Say the Waiters is almost an optioned property for TV and/or film

The option agreement will be signed in the next couple weeks, maybe even by Friday. More details when I can legally reveal them. It is weird though, essentially getting an entertainment attorney and co-producer in the same day. What's weirder is sitting in a cabin in the back yard, creating something from scratch - literally out of nothing - and now it's a "property" that needs "protection and representation". It just feels cool and bizarre and mostly awesome.
All...

easy fixes to Gears of War, Judgement

It’s easy to critique a game once it’s finished. Sometimes I feel bad for developers and game writers who are at the whim of fickle critics. Often times, a great game is bashed by a few notable websites and blogs, resulting in massive sales losses. That’s the way the current reviewing system works. I’d love to see a blog that reviews games weeks after they are out, after playing the campaign through twice, and once all the hype is over.

Playing through Gears of War, Judgment, I’m pretty happy...

source material for So Say the Waiters - Taxlo / Taxidermy Lodge vintage photos

I really never thought this part of my life would make for any kind of good writing. I fact, I tried to keep club promotion and bartending very separate from my creative life. Almost ten years later, I'm beginning to realize how valuable these subcultures are. Much of So Say the Waiters is about creating cultures of your own. That' exactly what we were aiming to do with Taxidermy Lodge (Taxlo). It was our own culture and economy, our own art and entertainment. We controlle...
