I write paranormal mystery, so most of my mysteries have a ghost involved somewhere. The first ghost I ever saw is a mystery to me. I want to know who she is and what her connection is with that house. When I was researching the house some years back, I learned that there had been another house on that lot much earlier, but it had been moved to another location. I want to know who the ghost is and why she stays there.

Oh my goodness, just one? Let's see, I always loved Rhett and Scarlett from "Gone With the Wind." They were both passionate, fiery-tempered, and unconventional, and I thought they went well together. Anne and Gilbert from "Anne of Green Gables" were always fun to read about; I loved the way their relationship developed. And finally, Laura and Almanzo from the "Little House" books. I just loved the way their relationship grew from noticing each other to walking home from church, to buggy rides and singing school, and I loved the understated way Almanzo proposed. I have to say, prefer the books' treatment of their growing love for each other over the TV version.

The one I'm working on right now is the second book in the Kyrie Carter Paranormal Adventure series. The inspiration for this one kind of came at a time when I was feeling nostalgic for my college days. Willow Lake is based very heavily on my alma mater, Lock Haven University. The campus has a very similar set-up, and I drew on some of the campus ghost stories in creating the mystery in my plot line. Also, one of the characters, Dr. Keane, was a bit of a tribute to a favorite professor who passed away as I was writing "School Spirits."

It really depends on what I'm writing. A lot of times, inspiration comes from odd or unexpected places--a strange dream, a bit of overheard conversation, a certain smell, people watching at the mall. I'm always on the lookout for places that would make a good story setting or situations that would make an interesting plot twist. My kids love YouTube right now, and every so often they dig up an old song that sparks a memory of where I was when I first heard the song or brings up feelings or an event that is tied to hearing that song.

I just love being able to create characters and story lines in my head, put them on paper or on the computer, and share them with others. I love seeing other people enjoy something I created.

Sometimes I read a book that is in the same genre I'm writing in; seeing how another author handles a specific scene or situation can help break through a block.
Going for a walk or a drive sometimes helps as well. The change of scenery can be inspiring.
And sometimes, just walking away from my writing for awhile is all I need.

Besides the obvious answer--just WRITE--I would suggest finding a writers' group where you can share your work and get feedback. Don't be afraid to visit a couple groups before settling on one; some people may benefit from a more structured group, while others may do better with a group whose agenda is more open. If you're looking to publish, you may want to find a group with some published authors who can give you advice.

Right now, I'm revising "School Spirits," the second book in the Kyrie Carter series. In the second book, Kyr returns to her alma mater, Willow Lake College, for an investigation with the campus Paranormal Club. She is delighted when Drac and Gabe also show up, but annoyed when Spook Steele shows up as well.
Throughout the course of the investigation, Steele and Kyr become friends and are on the brink of something more when things once again take a treacherous turn. As Kyr and the Petery Paranormal team discover, Willow Lake has more than ghosts; the town also has a dark secret that is the key to the haunting.
