“Make no mistake, pretty Kate,” he murmurs to me. “I still intend to woo you. I will give you time to get over your shyness, but just because we have not resonated does not mean that my heart will forget yours.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“A fierce hunter like myself needs more encouragement than that. Will you let me mouth-mate you?”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“When you have the person you love at your side, it doesn’t matter what the weather is or if you’re sleeping in animal furs instead of thousand thread count sheets. All that matters is the love and the happiness it brings.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“Know that even if I am a hunter who can be foolish at times, I would cherish everything you would give me.” I put my hand over hers. “And if I say or act a certain way, it is because I am addicted to your laughter.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“I do not wish you to be in danger, pretty Kate. You should leave me.”

“Quit saying that—”

“It grows dark soon—”

“Are there predators on the ice?”

He shifts—or tries to—and winces. “No. Not at night. Too many dangerous cracks in the ice.”

“You mean, the animals are too smart to cross, but we did it? Are you fucking serious?”

“It was safe until you pushed me.”

I bite back my hysterical response, because okay, I did push him. It’s not solving anything to bicker right now. I’ll murder him when we’re both nice and safe.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“Kate laughs. “One-track mind much?” “My mind has many tracks, but they all lead right back to you.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“This is going to hurt you worse than it’s going to hurt me,” I tell him. “But I reserve the right to puke repeatedly.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“Things change, Harrec. They’re not good or bad. They’re just different. We can look back at the past, but at the end of the day, that’s all that it is—the past.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“attractive or act like you’re in love with me just so you can embarrass me. Just let it go for a few days, all right?”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“She calls me dingaling. I wonder if it is a name of affection. I like it; it sounds musical. “Why would I ever lie to you, my sweet dingaling?”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“We are not feeding Mr. Fluffypuff his own mommy and daddy.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“Human males sound rather terrible. Strange how their females can be so wonderful and the males so brutal. Perhaps they have so many females around that they do not realize what a gift they are.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“It is a long journey with many cold nights ahead.”

“Wouldn’t you just love that.”

“I would, yes.” He grins at me.

“I’d rather freeze, thank you.”

“Would you? I should like to think I could have you in my arms before we return to the tribe.”

My face feels like it’s burning with humiliation. “That will never happen.”

“That sounds like a challenge.”

“Or common sense.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“And you are safe and loved with me,” I promise her, rubbing her back.

Kate looks up at me in surprise. “You love me?”

“Always. Have you not guessed?”

For some reason, she looks indignant. “I shouldn’t have to guess! A girl likes to hear this sort of thing!”

I grin and cup her pink cheeks, feeling more like myself. “I loved you the moment you appeared and stood over the others like a she-mountain.”

Kate makes an outraged noise but then ruins it by laughing a moment later. “You are the worst with compliments, you know that?”

“Ah, but they all make you smile.”

“Yeah, my standards are pretty low, it seems.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“There is no one here but you and me. I shall never tell another if you decide I am not manly enough for you.”

Kate giggles, and the sound is sweet to my ears. “Thank goodness. I was so worried about that,” she teases, and when I clutch my chest as if wounded, her laughter escalates. “Sometimes I wonder if you’re ever serious, Harrec.”

“Only when I must,” I admit with a grin. “But I am very serious about how much I like you.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“So basically you’re telling me that out of the bachelor crew, we have a teen boy, a shy guy, and a broken-hearted sourpuss. And you.” Well, isn’t this ducky. “Yes. And I am taken.” He gives me a cocky grin.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
“Aayla’s little lower lip juts out and she starts to cry again. “I don’t like them, Mommy!” “Does Mommy look like she gives a shit? No, she does not. Eat that or you’re having your dinner raw tonight.”
Ruby Dixon, Barbarian's Lady
