“Susannah, I love you, but you are the most frustrating woman in the world. For once in your life, don't argue. Just do it.”

“You know it gets me hot when you're mad. What are you wearing right now under your stethoscope?'
'You're not funny.'
'Oh, come on. I'm a little funny.”

“Both Becca and David looked stricken, but only David, who'd been sitting at a picnic table next to Jake and Gina, turned nearly as red as his own hair. He'd invited his "good friend" Shahbaz to be his plus one at my wedding, then made it clear to all of us that they were more than friends by kissing under some mistletoe at Debbie and Brad's house during Thanksgiving dinner.
The Ackerman-Simon family did not shock easily, however. Brad had remarked only, "Dude, we get it, you're gay. Now pass the gravy.”

“What?” That’s when I knew how wrong I’d been.”

“If Father Dominic died, I would have lost the best mentor I'd ever had, and, absurdly enough, one of the best friends I'd ever had, as well. If someone had told me that the first day I'd walked into his office so many years ago, I'd never have believed it. What could an agnostic girl from Brooklyn and an elderly Catholic priest from California possibly have in common?
The ability to help wayward spirits find their way home, it turned out ... even if, as Father Dom had pointed out, we hadn't always agreed on our methodology.”

“Thanks a lot for inviting assorted randos from my past to my wedding reception, Father D. Who else can I expect to show up? If you say the Backstreet Boys, I won't be held responsible for my actions.”

“He lowered his eyebrows with disapproval as he took the phone. "CeeCee's aunt Prudence suffers from delusions."
"Right," I muttered. "Doctors. Everyone's got a disorder."
"Counselors," he shot back. "Everyone needs therapy.”

“This was in direct contrast to his younger brother, David (known to me privately as Doc, since he was also the most intelligent of my stepsiblings), who texted me a photo of himself in his dorm room at Havard, wearing - for reasons he did not explain - a woman's bustier and full makeup.
I wasn't certain if he was coming out of the closet or purposefully challenging gender stereotypes for some class assignment. Knowing David, it could be either, both, or none of the above.
But I responded to his message immediately - as opposed to the ones from his older brothers, which I ignored - with a thumbs-up sign.”

“I guess I must have verbally expressed my disappointment over losing the online auction for my kickass boots, since Becca said, "You sure do swear a lot."
I shrugged and pointed at the swear jar. "I'm supposed to put a dollar in it every time I curse. But I don't think I'm that bad." I didn't add that at the apartment my roommate, Gina, and I shared, she'd installed a swear jar, too.
"You're that bad," Becca said. "You said the F-word, like, five times in a row."
I tried not to sound indignant. "Swearing is a proven stress reliever. You should try it instead of doing that to yourself." I nodded toward her bandaged arm. "When I'm under a lot of stress, dropping a couple of f-bombs makes me feel a lot better."
"What have you got to feel stressed about?" She looked around the office. "This doesn't seem like such a hard job."
"Oh yeah? You don't know the half of it." My job wasn't the problem. It was my personal life that was currently going down the toilet. "I'm not even getting paid for this."
"What?" Becca came out of her daze a little, seeming genuinely surprised, but not enough to let go of the horse pendant. "How come?"
"Because there are, like, nine hundred applicants with way more experience than people my age for every job that comes available. We all have to work for free just to get some experience, so we can put it on our résumés so we can maybe get a paying job someday, but there's no guarantee we will. Oh, right, I forgot they don't mention this in high school. You''re still brimming with hope and joie de vivre.”
