“Solange looked enthralled, manic. Deadly. So I did the only thing I could think of.
I threw a snowball at her head.”
Alyxandra Harvey, Blood Prophecy
“When Kieran nudged me awake, I tried to punch him.
"Lucy—shit!" He ducked, smashing his head on the window.
I blinked blearily. "Sorry, Kier. Habbit."
He rubbed the back of his head. "Between you and Hunter, it's a wonder I have all of my limbs still intact."
I snorted, rubbing my eyes. "You dosed me with Hypnos."
"Three months ago. Let it go, Hamilton."
I just grinned sleepily. "You have so much to learn.”
Alyxandra Harvey, Blood Prophecy
“The Drake farmhouse was like the chimpanzee enclosure at the zoo when feeding time was late.
You know, if all the chimpanzees were undead.
And insane.”
Alyxandra Harvey, Blood Prophecy
“You're our best hope."
"If you call me Obi-Wan I'm going to kick you."
He grinned. "Hot. say Obi-Wan again."
I laughed, shoving his shoulder. "Shut up.”

“I hadn't had a chance to read an entire novel in weeks.
Whatever the others might say about politics, civil war, and hunters, the real evil was lack of reading time. If they all read more they might freak out less. And if I was going to live forever I was going to have to start a reading list.”
Alyxandra Harvey, Blood Prophecy
“The Drake's didn't lure drunk college students out of the bars and compel them to forget being fed on. Well, maybe Quinn used to, but I could guarantee none of those girls needed to be compelled.”

“I could see the widening of his pupils, and the pale blue fire of his irises. He'd told me my eyes would change too, would go lighter until they looked like amber. I couldn't imagine they'd be half as beautiful as his. He was gentle and self-deprecating and way tougher than people gave him credit for. And twin or not, he was even hotter than Quinn, in my humble opinion.”
Alyxandra Harvey, Blood Prophecy
“They were untamed, like thunder and lightning in a glass jar. You just knew, sooner or later, the jar would shatter into pieces.”

“A shaft of sunlight fell on me, making my dress look like fire and my skin glow like pearls. The shadows around me darkened, as if my glowing skin were leeching the light from everything around me. I was a lantern on the longest, darkest moonless night.”
Alyxandra Harvey, Blood Prophecy
“I knew how he felt, how it was like being swallowed by winter, so that even your insides were too stark and too cold.”

“You have to e-mail me every day,” Lucy demanded. She threw a macaroon at my head to illustrate the seriousness of her request.
I ducked it easily. “You too.” I tossed one back at her, missed, and hit Nicholas in the temple.
“Ow,” he said mildly.”

“Can I get you anything?" I couldn't remember if the Amrita family drank human blood or animal blood.
"I'm just hiding out from my little sisters. They giggle." She tilted her head. "Where are all your famous brothers?"
"Around."
She rolled her eyes. "Are they as insufferable as mine?"
I rolled my eyes back. "Worse."
She looked unconvinced. "I only have the one," she pointed out. "My family has daughters the way yours has sons. His rarity has made Haridas's head roughly the size of a hot-air balloon."
I had to grin. "I have seven of those."
"Seven what?" Quinn interrupted, leaning in the doorway. "Seven heroically patient big brothers of which I am the obvious favorite?"
"Something like that," I allowed. "You know, if you replace 'brother' with 'baboon'?”

“That's not a grenade, is it?" Christabel whispered.
"Probably," I whispered back. "The have this awesome storage room full of cool stuff like that."
"Grenades are cool?" She looked dubious.
"Cooler than dead poets," I teased.
"Hey," both she and Logan said at the same time.”

“Lucy grinned. "Nathan's going to be pissed, but they're so cute."
"We really are," Quinn drawled, having only caught our last comment. Connor, standing next to him, rolled his eyes.
"How did you fit that big head of yours in the car on the drive over here?" Lucy teased.
"He had to stick it out the window like a dog," Nicholas added with a smirk as he came up behind Lucy. He sat beside her as Quinn pretended to look insulted.
"It's not my fault I'm so much prettier than the rest of you," he said with mock sorrow. "It's a burden.”
Alyxandra Harvey, Blood Prophecy
“I don't like that look on your face," Quinn groaned.
"I've just had an idea."
He groaned louder. "I'll get protective headgear for everyone.”

“Some sweet sixteen," Mom said, sliding her silver spike into her boot, as the Chandramaa were too busy to stop her. "I don't remember sixteen being quite so treacherous."
"I was there," Dad reminded her drily. "I'd say it's a family trait."
She just laughed, winding her arm through his. It was her first true laugh sine my bloodchange. Duncan, Marcus, and I grinned sloppily at one another. Then Dad kissed her and we looked hastily away, grimacing.
"Haven't we suffered enough?" Duncan muttered as we left them, still kissing.”

“I elbowed him. "Some people are scared of me, you know, like that guy over there." The guy in question paled when I looked his way and tried to hide behind a banner half his size.
Nicholas snorted. "Ten points if you can make him hide behind that creepy little girl over there.”

“Hunter shook her head. "How much backup do you think we need?" she asked Chloe. "It's like sneaking a heard of elephants."
"Jason's the best at locks," Chloe reminded her.
"And I'm just here because I'm nosy," I added helpfully.”

“But since we've all nearly died horribly several times in the past few days, I'll give you a free pass just for tonight. But you might, oh, I don't know, talk to him."
"And say what?" I asked, scrambling out of bed. I pulled my favorite jeans out of my closet and rummaged for a T-shirt. "Sorry I nearly chewed through your jugular? They don't exactly make a card for that."
"I could draw one for you."
"Ew.”

“What about your pheromones?" Marcus asked thoughtfully, as he gathered the last of the blood transfusion supplies into a bag. "Were they partly Viola's as well?"
"I don't know," I replied. "I can't tell."
"We should try an experiment."
"Make Duncan bark like a dog," Quinn suggested, jerking his head toward Duncan.
"Or you could try something more difficult, like making Quinn shut up," Duncan returned.
"Something simple would be best," Dad suggested drily. "And less likely to start a century-long feud.”

“Shouldn't you be eating chocolate?" I asked. "Guaranteed cure-all." I motioned at Chloe. "Give her some."
"She didn't want it," Chloe said. "And you can't have it." She stuffed the rest into her mouth, nearly choking.
Hunter chuckled. "I swear she's going to choke to death on chocolate one day," she said. "I feel sorry for whoever has to write her epitaph.”

“I showed her the essay he'd marked. It was practically dipped in red ink.
Jenna made a sympathetic face, then took a closer look. She rolled her eyes. "Well, no wonder. Helios-Ra don't wear spandex tights and capes. We're not superheroes."
"But you kind of think you are." I winked. "I just wrote that to see if he was paying attention."
"You wrote it because you're a brat," he muttered.
I beamed at him. "Now you sound like one of the Drake brothers.”

“You have got to stop writing in the library books," Tyson said.
"I will if you stop looking at me like I just kicked a kitten," I replied, sliding the offending book away from him. "I couldn't help it. Someone needs to edit these things."
He sat back in the library chair. "Yeah, they're called editors and they already did that."
I snorted. "Please. I could drive a truck through the holes in your education."
"We're here about your education, not mine." He actually lowered his forehead to bang it on the table. The librarian sent me a stern glance.
"What?" I said. "I'm not the one giving myself a lobotomy.”

“Think they'll work it out?" Nicholas asked.
"The emo twins?" I asked. "They love each other, so yes. Plus, I plan to smack their heads together.”

“Kieran, can you make a run for it with Lucy?" Nicholas asked. "'You can take one of the Jeeps," he added as Logan tossed Kieran his keys.
"I'm not leaving you guys," I sputtered. "When did you fall and hit your head?"
"Lucy, you're out of arrows and we're out of options." He darted a quick glance at Quinn, who was behind me.
I grabbed a fistful of Nicholas's shirt. "I'm not leaving you, you big dumb idiot." I whipped my head around and shot Quinn a glare. "Take one more step. I dare you." I knew full well he'd planned to sneak up on me and toss me over his shoulder. He paused, knowing equally well that I'd damage him if he tried.
He did it anyway.
I was suddenly airborne and then draped over his shoulder, which dug painfully under my ribs. "It's just faster this way," he said.
I shifted, cursing. "Put me down, you undead asshat."
"Just trying to save your ungrateful life," he shot back with grim cheer. I punched him right in the ass since I couldn't reach any other part of him.”

“We need to buy some time," Connor said, frowning at the Hel-Blar. "And we're running out of stakes."
"We could blow up the car," I suggested. Kieran didn't even look surprised, though it was his car.
"What is it with you and blowing up shit?" Quinn asked as Magda leaped off the hood, stabbing down with two daggers and catching two Hel-Blar at the same time. She was like a feral cat in a rainstorm, all claws and teeth.
"Hey, I didn't blow up that ghost town. That was all Hunter.”

“Helena paused. "Lucy?"
"Yes?"
She ran a hand over my hair and kissed my cheek, just like she kissed Solange's cheek when Solange was little. "We love you very much. But your mother and I will both lock you in a basement for the rest of your life if you try to follow us." She speared Kieran with the kind of look that made us all squirm even though it wasn't even aimed at us. "We're trusting you to take her back to school where it's safe."
He nodded. "Yes, ma'am."
"Kiss-ass," I muttered.
"Hell, yeah," he muttered back. "Like you're any braver.”

“I'm sure you can -"
"Here." Marcus cut me off, shoving a glass of orange juice and a pile of cookies at me.
Duncan snorted. "Like cookies are going to stop The Mouth." He hadn't called me that in years.
"I met your girlfriend," I said, just to bug him. It was better than giving in to the nerves and anxiety threatening to burn a hole in my stomach. "She's nicer than you."
Duncan just leaned over and shoved a cookie in my mouth. I flicked cookie crumbs at him.”

“You're smiling weirdly," Kieran said, shooting me a sidelong glance as we drove away from the school. "What's up, Hamilton?"
"Nicholas is okay," I replied happily. "Well, mostly. And I'm finally allowed back at the farm."
"Yeah, to get stabbed with needles. Is that any reason to look so deranged?"
I grinned, propping my feet up on the dash of his truck. "Don't worry," I told him. "We'll save Solange soon and then you can be as deranged as me."
He snorted. "I don't think anyone can be as deranged as you.”
Alyxandra Harvey, Blood Prophecy
“So what's plan B, exactly?"
"You heard Saga." I glanced at Connor. "The bogs. Saga said there are some runaway Hel-Blar with collars living there. So I'll be bait. They'll chase me, thinking I'm weak. And then you'll grab one."
Quinn looked at Connor then groaned. "On my God, it's like talking to Lucy.”
