“I’ve lost my whole world and gained it back again. The most important thing to me out of all of it—everything I’ve lost and everything I’ve gained—is you.”
She blinked at him with wonder.
“I love you,” he said. “I will love you until the day I die. No looking back. No changing my course.”

“More than he wanted answers about his history, more than he wanted his memory back, he simply wanted . . . Her.”

“Kiss me, Duke.” And so he did.”

“Watching me again?” she asked with amusement. “Every chance I get.” He crossed to her, leaned over, and kissed her. Right when he was losing his ability to think and breathe, she whispered, “Merry Christmas, Jeremiah,” against his lips. He pulled back a few inches. “Merry Christmas, Remy.” They beamed at each other. “Can I open my gift now?” she asked. “Only if I can open mine.” He straightened, nodding to the rectangular, five-foot-tall wrapped box. “Deal.” She popped to her feet and retrieved her smaller, flatter box. “Me first.” She tore free the paper to reveal a very amateur painting of ocean, the cliff in front of her cottage, her house, and sky. Her lips parted in delighted surprise. “Did you . . . paint this?” “I did. I’ve secretly been taking painting lessons. It wasn’t easy to figure out what to give a woman who doesn’t want expensive, store-bought things. What you seem to like best is art that has sentimental value. So I hope this has enough sentimental value to make up for the fact that it’s terrible.” She hugged it against her chest, eyes dancing. “Jeremiah! I love it. It’s my new favorite piece.” “Maybe you can squeeze it onto a wall somewhere next to the rest of your crazy art.” “I’ll thank you not to call my art crazy.” “Fine. From now on I’ll call it eccentric.” “Open mine!” Turned out she was a bossy Christmas gift person. “The box has no bottom,” she added. “You can lift it straight up.” He did so. Beneath stood one of her sculptures. His favorite sculpture. “Emiline?” he asked, grinning. “I thought you said I couldn’t have it. That it wasn’t for me.” “Turns out it was for you, after all. I’m as surprised as anyone. Can you figure out why it’s for you?” Remy intertwined her fingers with his. He had no idea. “Because Emiline harnessed her powers? And so have I because I harnessed my powers of flirtation and won your heart?” “No.” She made a try again gesture. “Because Emiline has an inflated head and so do I?” She laughed. “No! Because Emiline was brave and eventually found herself. You had amnesia. But you were brave, and you found yourself, too.” He tugged her against him. “Thank you.” “I’ll take my thanks in a less verbal form.” “What did you have in mind?” he asked in a low whisper.”

“In the last few months,” he said, “I’ve lost my whole world and gained it back again. The most important thing to me out of all of it—everything I’ve lost and everything I’ve gained—is you.” She blinked at him with wonder. “I love you,” he said. “I will love you until the day I die. No looking back. No changing my course.” Joy gusted within her. “I love you, too. I will love you until the day I die. No looking back. No changing my course.” His features smoothed with astonishment. “I've been trying to think of a way to say that to you,” she continued, “that was either grand and imaginative or heartfelt and real. But there’s no better way to say that than how you just said it to me. So I’m riding your coattails.” “I want to marry you,” he said bluntly. Then hurried to add, “But I realize you’re nowhere near ready for that, so I’ll wait and maybe one day you’ll say yes. On that day, I’ll have a ring and a better speech.” “This speech isn’t terrible.” “I’ll go to Islehaven to be near you and sleep on Leigh’s torture mattress.” “You’ll live there without a grocery store or a decent road?” “For you, yes.” “And I’ll expand my horizons,” she said. “Maybe one day we can live at least part of the time at Appleton together.” He quirked a brow in surprise. “I suppose your ostentatious mansion isn’t the worst fate in the world,” she conceded. “I might be able to hack it there. But only if you get rid of Dartin’s art.” He grinned. “And if we live as simply and privately as possible,” she continued. “In fact, I think it would be best if you give your money away to charity.” “I’m not giving all of it away. I like fast cars.” “And freshly ground Arabica coffee and twenty-one-year-aged rum.” “I also like good food, good sheets, good clothes, and good Wi-Fi,” he rattled off. She laughed and was rewarded with his heart-melting smile as he looked at her softly. “But mostly,” he finished, “I love you.” Then he took her face in his hands and kissed her. Remy's thoughts spun and their chemistry enveloped them, and in their little corner of Maine near the ocean, everything was righter than right with their world.”

“But it had. Why? Literally . . . why? Because I love her. There it was. As true as his heartbeat, as clear as glass. For several seconds, he grappled to understand himself, to take an objective look at his emotions. Conclusion: He was completely and totally, no-going-back, no-saving-himself-now in love with Remy Reed. How had he let this happen? He’d let it happen with every decision he’d made after coming to consciousness in her house the day she’d rescued him. When he’d insisted she come with him to the mainland. When he’d sought her out. When he’d kissed her.”

“If I were you,” Dad said, “I’d stick with food over women. Food doesn’t demand anything and it’s a lot more predictable.”

“Afterward, she and Burke would maintain their friendship and she’d be buoyed by the pleasing knowledge that he found her attractive.”

“And for me it's anything but. I'm not fancy enough or outgoing enough for you. I'm scared to leave Islehaven, but as your girlfriend I'd need to leave it often. For what purpose, though? Since I'm unlikely to fit into your world once I get there.” “I’ll change my world to fit you.” “I don’t believe that.” “I would do anything for you, Remy.”

“This time you don’t need me.” He looked her dead in the eyes. “I need you.” There was power in the words and intensity in his expression.”

“Then she was kissing him again. And then they were kissing each other. And Jeremiah was doing his best to put every single thing he felt for her into that kiss.”

“He stopped himself before making a sound of impatience. Instead, he merely looked at her, willing her with his eyes to kiss him. Kiss me. It felt like the most urgent thing in his world. The difference between life and death. He was willing to give her his house, his cars, and everything else he could think of if she would just kiss him.”

“You okay with this?” Jeremiah whispered to Remy. “Yes.” “You’ll let me know if that changes?” “I will.” “Dance,” Leigh encouraged, shoving pieces of furniture out of their way. They danced on a thousand-year-old carpet that Jeremiah believed was woven out of nothing but dust.”

“Remy threw out her arms and turned in a circle. She was dressed in a parka, insulated leggings, and duck boots. The cold had turned her cheeks pink. She seemed to love her view, but it wasn’t half as good as his.”

“On Monday, Halloween, she outsmarted him by setting her dinner alarm ten minutes earlier than usual, then hurrying to the nearest mirror to check her appearance. She hadn’t given a thought to her looks in years. But yikes. She was glad she’d checked.”

“He scrutinized her. “What’re you thinking?” She slid her hands into her jumpsuit’s pockets. “I’m thinking it would be a lot simpler to be around you if you were easier to resist.” His lips curved. “It would be a lot easier if you didn’t resist.”

“You follow your instincts when you create art,” he said, his voice like velvet on her skin. “Do the same here.”

“It gave me hope that nightmares don’t necessarily have to intrude every time.” He seemed to consider that as he nodded. “You are incredibly beautiful to me.” She waved a hand and took another step back, unwilling to let herself internalize his words or the way he looked saying them. “You’re the dazzling one. Ask anyone.” “I don’t care what anyone else might say. Between us, the truth is this. You’re the dazzling one.”

“What’s your offer?” “I’ll join you for your morning walks and yoga sessions on the weekdays. Then stay out of sight. Then bring dinner in the evenings.” “The walks are fine but it’s a no for the yoga sessions. Most of the yoga poses require me to point my butt toward the ceiling.” “That’s not a dealbreaker for me.” “Hard no.” “Fine.”

“Tears gathered on her lower lashes and the sight of that was a blow to his lungs. He wanted to take Gavin’s neck in his hands and squeeze.”

“My judgment told me it was safe to kiss Gavin.” “It wasn’t your judgment that failed you that night, Remy. It was him. Only him. If I’d been dating a woman, invited her into my home, and kissed her, it would not be my judgment’s fault if she then physically attacked me. She'd be at fault. That’s it.”
