Notes:
(1) "...a college-age sales dude with green hair [was] typing away on his phone while humming along to an all-violin version of 'So Yesterday' ... 'Hey, I love this song!' Grover said."
- Keen observers will remember that in "The Lightning Thief," Hilary Duff's "So Yesterday" is one of only two songs Grover knew how to play on his reed pipes.

Notes:
(1) "[Grover] danced around the edge of the mob playing his panpipes. Once he made it to the gate, he skipped backward toward the park, blasting out the Ghostbusters theme song, which is guaranteed to enrage anyone with mortal ears."
- Huh, I thought Riordan was all about the '80s.
- You'd think folks would love that song on Halloween.

Notes:
(1) "I grinned and spun the torches in slow motion like Bruce Lee with nunchakus."
- I don't think Bruce Lee did anything in slow motion... well, maybe in "The Green Hornet."
- I'm not sure Percy knows what nunchakus are. I mean, torches don't move that way. He's probably confusing them with escrima sticks, which Bruce Lee also used in films.

Notes:
(1) Percy discovers a new special ability: he can write messages with Riptide that regular mortals can't see.
- Imagine that? Percy's ballpoint pen can be used for writing!
(2) I'm disappointed in the lack of action and also pop culture references.
- The only monsters we've seen are friendly pets.
- Though Riordan's touristy tidbits are back. New York's fairly interesting if overrated.

Notes:
(1) "Greek Myth Land is full of triple goddesses: The Fates. The Gray Sisters. The Furies. Destiny's Child. I couldn't keep track of them all."
- Um, actually, Destiny's Child was originally a foursome, Mister Riordan. They weren't an established trio until like three albums in.
- I can understand Beyoncé, but the others aren't near god-tier.

Jayson is starting
Notes:
(1) I pre-ordered this book and just got it in the mail yesterday.
- I also pre-ordered "The Chalice of the Gods," but never got around to it until about a month ago, in time to read before this one was released.
(2) I liked "The Chalice of the Gods" well enough, though it never felt substantial. More like a really long short story padded out with loads of nostalgia.
- I expect pretty much the same thing here.

Jayson - That callback's a real deep cut!
- The other song, by the way, is Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 12.
(2) Chapter 16 is titled "Hellhounds! at the Disco" and Chapter 19 is titled "Oops!... I Killed You Again."
- Clearly, Panic! at the Disco and Britney Spears references, and both with exclamation points!
- I wonder if Riordan's tired of shoehorning music references in the narration/dialogue and is using chapter titles now? I mean, it still keeps with the theme of chapter titles doubling as plot teasers.
- The titular "disco" is actually a German nightclub, though characters here use both terms. Call me old-fashioned but, to me, it's not a disco without a disco ball.
(3) Along with Percy's newfound writing ability, Grover can now communicate with nature through the dirt.
- It's a Cloven Elder ability called "grounding" that Percy hasn't seen. Though, I guess that's because they haven't really adventured together much since the first series.
- Sort of like how Swamp Thing communicates with The Green. So, I suppose it's technically a superhero power.
(4) "The top of the hydrant shot into the air like a billionaire's rocket, somersaulted a few times, and landed in the middle of Eighth Street."
- An Elon Musk reference. Nice to know Riordan's keeping this series up to date.
(5) Grover is suddenly very self-conscious about being a third-wheel in their trio.
- I keep forgetting that Percy and Annabeth were never really a couple until "Heroes of Olympus," and Grover wasn't with them.
(6) Grover and Percy visit a perfume shop called "Fancy Water."
- Ironically, it sounds a lot less fancy with "fancy" in the name.
- Incidentally, the Fancy Water scene is great! It really elevates the book in a way that feels like the original series again.
(7) Hecate's mansion feels very Grimmauld Place, especially with the trio basically living there on their own.
- Not the only "Deathly Hallows" feel to this book. Annabeth, Percy and Grover go in costume to another perfume store in a scene very much like Harry, Ron and Hermione breaking into Gringotts.
(8) Percy's embarrassed having to wear a loin cloth as part of his gladiator Halloween costume.
- Isn't he on the school swim team? Speedos should be his thing.
(9) I love that Annabeth hates spiders so much that she doesn't even like Spider-Man.
(10) Annabeth wears an N95 mask. So, I guess COVID happened in this reality.
- I mean, it's not like there's any other reason anyone would know what an N95 is.
- I wonder if that explains the three-year gap between this series and "The Trials of Apollo"? Perhaps all demigod questing was put on hold due to lockdowns?
