Notes:
(1) Percy discovers a new special ability: he can write messages with Riptide that regular mortals can't see.
- Imagine that? Percy's ballpoint pen can be used for writing!
(2) I'm disappointed in the lack of action and also pop culture references.
- The only monsters we've seen are friendly pets.
- Though Riordan's touristy tidbits are back. New York's fairly interesting if overrated.

Notes:
(1) "[Grover] danced around the edge of the mob playing his panpipes. Once he made it to the gate, he skipped backward toward the park, blasting out the Ghostbusters theme song, which is guaranteed to enrage anyone with mortal ears."
- Huh, I thought Riordan was all about the '80s.
- You'd think folks would love that song on Halloween.

Notes:
(1) "I grinned and spun the torches in slow motion like Bruce Lee with nunchakus."
- I don't think Bruce Lee did anything in slow motion... well, maybe in "The Green Hornet."
- I'm not sure Percy knows what nunchakus are. I mean, torches don't move that way. He's probably confusing them with escrima sticks, which Bruce Lee also used in films.

Notes:
(1) "...a college-age sales dude with green hair [was] typing away on his phone while humming along to an all-violin version of 'So Yesterday' ... 'Hey, I love this song!' Grover said."
- Keen observers will remember that in "The Lightning Thief," Hilary Duff's "So Yesterday" is one of only two songs Grover knew how to play on his reed pipes.

Notes:
(1) "Greek Myth Land is full of triple goddesses: The Fates. The Gray Sisters. The Furies. Destiny's Child. I couldn't keep track of them all."
- Um, actually, Destiny's Child was originally a foursome, Mister Riordan. They weren't an established trio until like three albums in.
- I can understand Beyoncé, but the others aren't near god-tier.

Jayson is starting
Notes:
(1) I pre-ordered this book and just got it in the mail yesterday.
- I also pre-ordered "The Chalice of the Gods," but never got around to it until about a month ago, in time to read before this one was released.
(2) I liked "The Chalice of the Gods" well enough, though it never felt substantial. More like a really long short story padded out with loads of nostalgia.
- I expect pretty much the same thing here.

Jayson (3) "I wondered if Hecate had smoke detectors. If they went off, would they summon the FDNY or some godly brigade of hosers?"
- As someone living in Canada, the term "hoser" means something entirely different here, albeit not mutually exclusive—I suppose one could be a hoser hoser.
(4) Is Duane Reade just a New York City thing? Riordan's got to chill with these super-local references.
- I'm not American, I barely know what Walgreens is.
(5) There's an awful lot of toilet humor... and an awful lot of humor about toilets.
- There's running jokes about Percy crapping his pants, Gale the polecat continually farting, hellhounds peeing on everything, and Grover belching so hard he shakes the earth.
- Also, Hecate's many wacky magical bathrooms.

Jenny Clark The fourth graphic novel of Heros of Olympus just came out- Maybe I'll catch up and start these!

Jayson Jenny wrote: "The fourth graphic novel of Heros of Olympus just came out- Maybe I'll catch up and start these!"

Graphic novels would be a good way to catch up. Though, these newest books are each pretty standalone. I mean, they reference past stories a lot, but only in a casual throwaway sort of way.

Virginia Ronan ♥ Herondale ♥ What?! He can actually use it for writing, too?! My world view has been forever changed. *lol*

Yes, definitely a game-changer! Now the sword being disguised as a pen makes perfect sense! Also, there's the irony that you can only use it for magical writing when it's not in pen form :)
