Coping

’I gotta go score,’ my girlfriend would say at three or four a.m. She would return hours later considerably out of pocket. She seemed healthy enough. Her eyes still sparkled and her cheeks glowed. ‘You look well,’ I would say.

I told her I wanted an addiction too. ‘We’re a couple. We should do things together.’ I pestered her until finally, she confessed to never having taken heroin in her life. She wouldn’t tell me anything else, but I looked everywhere, and eventually found the money. She’d stitched it into the mattress, like a crazy old woman.
