for all that the middle is boring the last ~7 chapters of this book really are so tremendously well done. also they should not have let me read this as a mentally unstable teenager

the first 2/3s of this book doesn’t deserve five stars but the last third makes me want to cry and scream and throw up and batter my head against the wall. which could mean nothing about my psyche

the weird part is dickens clearly does sympathize w the plight of the common people in france & yet he still presents the revolution as a bloodthirsty tyrannical mob killing anyone with a soft angelic spirit. it's not exactly bootlicking but it's verging. victor hugo would have words i fear

this book is so frustrating because there are so many fascinating character moments (even darnay and dr. manette get moments where they’re actually interesting, re: the guilt of generational wealth + trauma respectively), but then it’s like what if we were boring about a bank for a while
