the weird part is dickens clearly does sympathize w the plight of the common people in france & yet he still presents the revolution as a bloodthirsty tyrannical mob killing anyone with a soft angelic spirit. it's not exactly bootlicking but it's verging. victor hugo would have words i fear

this book is so frustrating because there are so many fascinating character moments (even darnay and dr. manette get moments where they’re actually interesting, re: the guilt of generational wealth + trauma respectively), but then it’s like what if we were boring about a bank for a while
