Okay, guys, recommend me some adult fantasy. I read Addie LaRue/Emily Wilde this year and LOVED them, and I like the vibes of the Night Circus, although it was too long for me. Darker Shade of Magic is on my TBR. Basically: adult fantasy that's heavy on the whimsy and light on the smut, if possible.

Beka Have you read A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross? It’s gorgeous. I still need to pick up the sequel. I’m also currently reading Starling House and it’s got dark gothic whimsy in SPADES.

Beka *Starling House by Alix E. Harrow

Christina Baehr Have you read SPINNING SILVER by Naomi Novik? It is gorgeous! Also, JONATHAN STRANGE AND DR NORRELL by Susanna Clarke if you are up for a tome (it inspired EMILY WILDE).

Christina Baehr Also, any of WR Gingell’s books fit your description. She has fairy tale retellings and urban fantasy — all clean, whimsical, and with murder! lol

Ali Dark Water Daughter by H. M. Long

The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia Mckillip (like a fairytale)

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

myla Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb is one of my favorite adult fantasy books—just a good classic fantasy with a focus on character development. pacing is slow though, just FYI.

Seriously, I highly recommend Pratchett if you want adult fantasy that's both thoughtful/deep and hilariously whimsical. Try "Mort," "Guards, Guards," "Wyrd Sisters," or "Witches Abroad."

Katie Hanna (Also, "A Darker Shade of Magic" is excellent and I loved it)

⋆。°·☁︎ sydney ⋆。°·☁︎ YES!! PLEASE read a darker shade of magic, then the fragile threads of power. SO. GOOD. Starling house is great, along with the once and future witches.

Ashley Stangl I don't know if it's adult or YA, but I loved the dreamy, fairy-tale atmosphere of "Yours, Constance" by Emily Hayse.

I NEED TO READ MORE PRATCHETT! I read the Tiffany Aching series as a wee tyke and then totally forgot about him. Time to read more!

You'll love them! His adult novels are just as good (and very clean, nothing beyond innuendo).

Maya Joelle Susanna Clarke is pretty much the only adult fantasy author I've wholeheartedly loved. Piranesi & Jonathan Strange are both very good (though very different from each other—the first is magical realism about imagination & reason, the second a massive historical fantasy tone that's basically Dickens if there were magic). I also enjoyed Sorcerer to the Crown & Shades of Milk and Honey which are more lighthearted, whimsical historical fantasies. Otherwise I think most adult fantasy skews way too far into the "romantasy" (blegh)/smut territory for me (I too am open to recommendations though!).
